I think Amazon has been this price for a while

  • you don't specifically need this for the PS5… right?

The Kingston KC3000 has storage benchmarks scores that exceed the 980 PRO and it is a cheaper SSD, by about $21 or so dollars.

KC3000 1TB $128 Free Delivery on Amazon au + $5 Cashback from TCB.

While you wouldn't see any difference in the real world between the two drives, that linked SSD doesn't include a heat sink and could likely throttle the speed. In the case of a PS5, Sony heavily suggests using one as well.

You're saving money on the Kingston, but that saving might need to be immediately invested into a compatible heat sink if the drive is getting too warm.

    • Big difference would the heat sink which is a must I would say

    • +1

You need a heatsink to use it with the PS5. This 980 Pro comes with a heatsink. If I was using the KC3000, I'd get one of these to go with it. https://www.amazon.com.au/Heatsink-Cooler-Double-Sided-Silic…

    • You need a heatsink for whatever SSD you put into PS5. That's for sure.

remember when 2tb was this price…

2 for $135 is a really good price.

    • Due to the NAND flash price (which skyrocketed in the end//Q4) - everything is far more expensive

  • can this be installed on a Dell laptop?

    • +1

Dell probably have made thousands of laptop models. Without a specific model anyone here is just guessing.

      • it's the vostro 7500

        • +1

If it supports M.2 NVME drives, 2280 length and has the headroom for the heatsink it will work.

          • +1

@niknikniknik: Are you sure the laptop has the thickness to fit an M.2 NVMe SSD with a heatsink such as this. The Vostra 4500 is only 17.50 mm (front) and 18.90 mm max thick (rear). The SSD is 8.6 mm thick (with the heatsink) so that leaves around only a cm or even less leeway for the rest of the laptop. It really is not a thick laptop.

            • @hollykryten: You don't need much space around the heatsink. The heat is generated only when it is reading or writing, so the heatsink is acting like a sink, unlike a CPU cooler where it has the added task of removing the heat from the heatsink itself too.

1tb is too small for a ps5 you need at least 2tb.

    • I got the 2tb version when I got my PS5 nearly 2 years ago. I've outgrown it and am contemplating a 4tb purchase soon.

      • same I got a 2tb the day they enabled the pcie port finally on the ps5.

Can't you just un and reinstall games you don't play?

          • +2

@Tony yang: no takes too long if I want to play a game I can go just play it if I have to install it I will loose interest in playing new games lol. its all about games on demand!! like the old days with carts and discs.

          • +4

@Tony yang: Yes, I'm not sure why people here need 4 TB of games installed at one time, how many games are you actually playing at once? As I said in another comment I do just fine with 1 TB + the 600 GB included on the PS5 itself

            • @FrugalSplack: I have a 1TB in my PS5, a 1TB external USB SSD for PS4 games and the Internal drive and all are full at all times. I want whatever I want to play after work or when I have a moment of free time to be ready, as I have limited gaming time these days and never know what I'm in the mood for, and will often be playing through 4-5 games at a time depending on my mood. I know a lot of people remain focused on one game at a time, and for them i'm sure that is fine.

            • +1

@FrugalSplack: Its more for convenience - I recently uninstalled SF6, GT7 and MK1 to clear space for more games.

If I was more organised I'd have done what I did in the early days of my Xbox Series S ownership and copy games back and forth between the main drive in the console and an external… but the convenience of a more expensive option usually wins out (purchased the seagate 2tb expansion card at $700 - expensive yes but the benefits outweighed the price for me).

I did similar on the ps5 at first (kept my ps4 games on an external)… but not long after buying the console I saw a Samsung 2tb /w Heatsink for a cheap price and pounced. I don't keep every game that I play on there, if it's a single player game (GOW, TLOU, Uncharted etc) it gets uninstalled once I've beaten the story. But the multiplayer games get kept on there and are played when I'm in the mood (GTA V, Rocket League, MK 11, Injustice 2, Tetris Effect to name a few).

              • +1

@hawktalk: These days if you have decent internet it's probably easier to just go make a coffee while you wait for the game to install. Although if you're still struggling with data caps or slow speeds something like that I could understand a bigger drive.

                • @FrugalSplack: As much as i'd like faster internet, for my use-case I really can't justify more than a 50mb connection (with 5 boosts to 100 per month) as it does all my streaming needs fine, justifying faster internet just for downloading PS5 games to my housesmates wouldn't make much sense.

                  • @witheredcouch: I just wish you didn't have to install it like the switch you just put in the cart 90% of the time no updates required it just works. no install required. no time wasted.

                    • @kungfuman: I guess providing every game on a 100+ GB flash card would be higher costs than they'd like.

                      • @witheredcouch: hey they used to run games completely off blu rays remember with the ps3 they just rans most of the time with out updates. on the ps3, and the ps2 and ps2 dvds just ran :D

      • I'm on the hunt for a 4TB too for pc.
Let me know if you find anything good!

        • I'm looking for a 2TB as offload most of my data into a HDD for backup.

          I think 4TB is $350+ for a decent one.

          • @PuppieWayne: Yep, the ozbargainer in my is not willing to pay that much. I'm "HODLing" for a good EOFY bargain.

            • @lordra: Was waiting for EOFY.. but I don't think price will get better due to AI.

              • +1

                @PuppieWayne: Who knows mate.

I got the Samsung 990Pro 2tb for $207 so that was a right bargain. So I'm hovering to see what else I can get.

    • +1

Been happily using 1 TB SSD on my PS5 for over three years now. Have everything installed that I might want to play.

    • I too install games and never play them

is this not a better deal?
    2tb Lexar NM790 with Heatsink $179
    https://www.mwave.com.au/product/lexar-nm790-2tb-heatsink-m2…

    • I came to comment that, it's a really good drive; I have bought 2 of them now. I initially bought one back in December to use as a secondary drive to a 1TB WD SN850X, but getting full read/write speeds on both. I decided to just go with this as the main drive on my latest build.

      • +2

I thought the Lexar is not good for OS due to lack of DRAM. It is better to use for storage. I am not an expert, happy to be corrected.

        • +1

Forgot about that. Bootup has been fast enough that I haven't thought of it but I will probably replace that OS drive.

        • The delay is bare min and in the grand scheme of things, an average user isn't going to notice a huge huge differences in OS loading time.

Someone compared an OS load between Dram and Dramless and it was 1.5s to 2s.

File write was a lot faster with the Dramless.

got 2tb version of this from amazon US a while go for same price

    • Same, but doesn’t mean this isn’t a deal, just not as good.

      • never said it was a bad deal, just stating

        • So you mean you got a 2TB one for the same price, so it's a good deal?
Come on, mate. There is a reason for what you said.

    • And your point is?.

But it's not at the same price right now. In fact it's $323.19 from Amazon US.

  • I have a 27” iMac late 2013 3.4Ghz i5
Would this blade be compatible with what I’m after.
I want to add a 2TB 2.5 SSD WITH THE BLADE TO MAKE A 3TB Fusion Drive.
    Will this be compatible anyone?

    • This is an M.2. NVMe SSD. It's not an 2.5" SATA SSD drive. Not compatible.
