Food hipsters are food hipsters are food hipsters.

        • The term you’re looking for is “Cert IV qualified chef and food safety supervisor”

      • +3

There's objectively a very large difference between a 20 year old car near the end of its life and a brand new vehicle. The difference between salts is there, but it's small.

        • +2

To most people it's irrelevant, like nuances of wine or coffee.

        • +1

I can't believe that needs to be spelt out.

        • Wait until you hear that not all salt is table salt.
          - Sodium chloride.
          - Potassium chloride.
          - Calcium chloride.
          - Sodium bisulfate.
          - Copper sulfate.
          - Magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt)
          - Potassium iodide.
          - Potassium permanganate.

Nah. Doubt you'd put rock salt on your steak.

    • True, but salt flakes have their place.

Also some people swear they can taste the difference vs iodized salt (which they apparently hate the flavour)

      • Something something, double blind test, something.

    • Incorrect. You can't compare salt with anti-caking additives to proper salt.

    • For cooking, sure, most of the time (especially if it's being dissolved). For sprinkling or finishing, totally different. Grain size affects how salty it tastes and texture, and impurities affect flavour.

    Same price at Harris Farm

Add the word 'Murray River' to anything, gives it an automatic 'locally produced and can charge 200% more for it' vibe.

In this particular case it's made in Sunraysia and is a really great product.

    • -1

Nah, Coles flake salt is the same price

      • +1

its salt "flakes" so that you can control amount of salt when putting salt on food rather than the fine salt crystals which drops in larger amounts, so maldon vs murray vs other salt flakes , it's salt, Just to put into dishes while cooking use the $3kg stuff.

        • I know. Different salts for different purposes.

You only use this for applications where it's not going to be dissolved into the food.

I'm just pointing out that adding Coles and Murray River flake salt are the same price.

Vegan organic Murray River salt flakes made from the crystal waters of the Himalayas.

    • First time I had this was in the USA, about 15 years ago, at a fine dining restaurant. I had to ask the server which Murray River exactly?

I was astonished it was actually from Australia.

      • Did you follow the river question up with so is your head chef on Ozbargain?

  • +2

shamefully I do buy this, but its because I am helping to fight desalination of the Murray…maybe?

    • Buying Murray River Salt to fight desalination of the Murray - what's the logic?

      • It's reducing the salt in the area by putting the salt into these boxes 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • Bought one. Figured why not I'll try it on some Wagyu

    • +1

the crystals make it easy to sprinkle evenly on things like steak and chips …

  • Premium price for unknown impurities.

Moved to Celtic a while ago.. seems to have 73 trace minerals in perfect Ratio as the human body needs it.

It's salt Jim but not as we know it

  • I tried this last time it was on special.

Tasted too much like river, like it had a fishy taste to it. Maybe good if you're putting it on fish and chips I suppose, but I think the river they get it from must have a lot of fish in it or something to give it that taste.

  • I paid double that last time I ordered from Amazon, but they sent it in a bubble pouch and the box inside was flattened. Complained on live chat and they refunded me. Free salt is somehow a lot tastier.

  • Seriously? Gourmet salt! Everyone is complaining about the cost of living but not deriding this as ridiculous? Marketing masterclass right there…

  • Unsure if anyone else can do this but in my local area, pfd a place that stocks and delivers goods for businesses has this at $5.01 per unit at 250g, and you can usually ring and ask to pick some up
