My Review of The Kogan 40" 5120x2160 Monitor

Hey everyone,

I saw the 40" Kogan monitor the other week and thought it was super interesting, especially for the price.

I went ahead and bought it anyway even though it's Kogan 😅

I made a short review so we would have a point of reference if others are interested in getting one but were unsure

This is my first video of this kind, so suggestion are welcome!

      @$600
      - Very decent for productivity.
      - Good for RTS/simulator games
      - very bad for competitive games

  • Great review. That power plug is weird that it doesn't penetrate further.

This monitor has no shortage of weird things.

I found the other day that "warm" color is normal and "normal" is warm ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • hi hi @Brotality, any other hiccups with the monitor so far ? (it is discounted again https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/886147 and I am on the edge: should I ditch my dell38 wqhd+ or not)

@SurprisedPanda It's been running like a dream since day one. I honestly can't fault it.

I don't know if it's a huge upgrade over your Dell. It's definitely more ppi, might make sense if you have another use for the Dell.

  • @Brotality, one more thing, can you control brightness, etc. via software or it is only via buttons on the monitor ? Thanks in advance.

I don't think so, some monitors you can turn on HDR and then change the SDR brightness in settings. I don't believe there is HDR at all on this model from memory.

I believe by default one of the directions of the joystick at the back will do brightness.

I can check that stuff next week when I'm back at the office.

    • did you end up getting it? I have the same Dell monitor

  • any issues so far?

    • Nope. I still can't fault it at all

      • Thank you for this video . It helped me a lot to buy the same. Currently at 579$ .

  • I specifically signed up to give my review also.
I jsut purchased from Kogan for $599.
Coming from a Samsung C34J791 1440p 21:9, this monitor is a dissapointment. It is quite dim, only 350nits. and yes it makes a massive diffrence. Even though this monitor is 5k2k, i much prefered the old Samsung even at 1440p. The brightness makes a huge difference and makes this monitor look poor. The monitor does not auto turn off or wake on mouse like normal monitors. it stays on. You have to manually turn it off with the back button. The screen also looks "muddy" and doesnt wow you like a normal 4k screen does. There was a lot of screen tearing also. It does have HDR and can confirm that works but its even less bright. Size is about right - colors are meh. You get what you pay for. Its priced about right imo. I got it for $599. It has kogan logo on bottom of the frame and when turning on is a white kogan logo at startup - jaggedy edges of the logo too showing poor quality. Just seems very poor. Save your money and just buy the LG 45GX950A. Dont just buy for the resolution.

    • What kind of device are you using with this monitor? Which port are you using?

I can't replicate any of your notes on my monitor

      • Mine wakes up and automatically turns off no problem
      • Kogan on startup is part of the OSD (On Screen Display), which A) nearly never runs on the native resolutions on high resolution displays, and b) the memory on these built-in controllers is quite small as well, so you never expect a high resolution logo.
      • I have direct sunlight hitting my display and I can use it perfectly fine. 350 nits is nothing to sneeze at in doors. Are you sure its on 100% brightness in the menu?
      • last but not least, what do you mean by "muddy"? this is one of the sharpest displays I have. Can you see if your device is running it at max resolution?

I'm not discounting anything you're saying. This is the very first negative feedback I see about the monitor. Its entirely possible you got a defective one, but I would definitely take a deeper look at it.

      • It's strange, because the rated brightness of the C34J791 is only 300nits and even lower when tested.

Sounds a lot like a case of PEBKAC
