        • annoying, thanks for your help mate, i emailed them too - will let you know if i get a resolution coz i still want the machine!

          • +1

@191919: I had the same thing happen.
Their system is costing us all a lot of time.

        • Thanks for letting us know - same issue here, actually I was surprised to see charges in my bank account as I made a couple of attempts with Paypal and I thought it was just like an 'authorisation' as the order didn't complete, so I wasn't expecting paypal to actually take any money.

I saw on my statement today that I have 2 x $64 transactions before I swapped to paying directly by card, came on here to read the comments and I see I'm not the only one.

I have written an email to the techstore address with hopes they will be able to understand and solve it.

Please let us know if you get any response, I'll let you know if I hear anything too.

          • +1

@Chris2027: I emailed a lady at Jaycar after she gave me her email on the phone. I also emailed techstore. Both have now ignored me.

Just opened a dispute with paypal for them to resolve it for me.

    • +1

Same. I got a "423 Locked" error after confirming purchase via Paypal/Card, then it wouldn't let me proceed - "Place Order" was grayed out but I was still charged.

UPDATE: I've opened a case with Paypal (click into the transcation, "Report a problem") to request a refund for the effected transaction. Paypal had options along the lines of "Request refund", "Seller agreed to refund", "Seller couldn't resolve issue".

      • any update?

        • +2

Paypal have contacted the seller (Paypal saying seller is expected to respond before 6/Jun). Then there's a 5 day Paypal review of the seller's provided info. Estimated case resolution is 11/Jun (14 days from submission?)

Not sure what'll happen if Jaycar don't respond to Paypal, but I'm sure they'll get to it and are just going through the backlog.

My card has also approved the transaction so I am down on money, but should be fine - Paypal are normally great (touch wood).

          • @HcNguyen111: thanks for the update appreciate it mate will let you know if i hear anything useful

          • +1

@HcNguyen111: @HcNguyen111 i just got a refund notification from paypal, i hadn't bothered opening a support case yet

            • +2

@191919: I got a Paypal refund too. I immediately emailed sales@ when I got the error; no reply yet, but it's sorted now.

        • +1

          Got my refunds :)

    • My first attempt failed using Visa debit card, no order processed on their side and I was charged $64. I called their support today and waiting on a call back. If I have nonluck ill lodge a dispute with bank.

I was told in store that their new site has been nothing but problems so they've currently taken it offline.

  • Can raspberry pi 5 be used instead?

    • yes, with adaptors….the HDMI will be the wrong size so you'll need a cable, and the USB-C will need replacing with a micro-USB.
both are extremely easy to do

      • ok so my pi 3b+ just all plugs in no problems so far.

      • Mine came with a micro-HDMI to HDMI adaptor, so all that would be needed for a Pi4/5 would be the USB-C adaptor

        • +1

          Mine came with both adaptors.

          • +1

@bongo007: Strange. Mine also came with a long HDMI cable and a USB-A to A cable which I can't see a use for.

        • yep they all come with the adapters I think jaycars website needs to be updated.

  • +1

    Thanks OP.
Been procrastinating about one of these for some time :-). got one on click and collect for the local jaycar.
shame the 25% off $100 spend isn't today also eh :-P

I purchased the arcade joystick thingy (https://www.jaycar.com.au/raspberry-pi-retro-arcade-game-con…) for $50 on discount the last time they had their 50% off sale, that's excellent but not used much due to hogging the TV / monitors. I'll turn it into a USB joystick for the xbox

  • Ordered 2 for pickup at Aspley (apparently they have enough in stock). Now to dive into the "tech boxes" in the spare room, 90% sure I've got a few 3B+ somewhere in there, lol

  • ok I am going to pick it up now :D be interesting how this work I have a retropie image setup too a few hours to do last night lol but got it how I like it with the right arcade roms and stuff, as well as a few modifications and the python scripts installed for this thing I just need to run the config script for the button mappings.

  • +1

Has shop.jaycar.com.au stopped working? I received order confirmation yesterday, but no pickup notification yet.

    • Went to try my luck at the store I ordered from. They said their store is closing down and doesn't accept click and collect orders and my order never came through to them. Guess that was another bug with the "new" website that they have now closed. They said they have to process a refund for my order via zendesk.
They also mentioned that the website was adding an additional discount for clearance stock which it was not meant to. I only I had ordered from a proper store that still had C&C.

I did manage to get the last one they had for $64.

Kids are watching a DVD on the screen. Don't actually have a Pi yet (:

  • Just picked it up :D apparently there is alot of orders for the unit at my local jaycar :D saw many of them they has to look for mine because it was one of the early ones lol.

  • the link is not working now, guess they fixed the old link or whatever. The item shows $169 on their website atm.

    • Looks like they have taken the new website down (links advertising it gone too). Must have been causing them a lot of headaches being ozbargain'd over the weekend.

  • I just picked one up in store, which had $64 on it.

    Warners Bay - 1 left.

They were also advertising a sale, up to 60% off

  • +1

guys phone around a mate of mine was able to pickup one for 64 bucks still don't rely on the website data.

  • +1

Luckily nabbed one in melb via click and collect this morning before going to work. Was last one available in north, central and south or melb according to site stock. Box was bigger than I thought it would be. Assumed it would be a fully assembled yourself deal. Will be fun to tinker with. Have a old rp 3 lying about to use on it.

  • Anyone know if a rpi2 would work in this…. All my rpi3’s and 4’s are in use :)

    • Picked mine up. Came with HDMI to MicroHDMI adapter and MicroUSB to USBC adapter also which was nice.

      • Maybe that’s a yes then

  • ok 2 buttons won't map the pink buttons do you guys have the same issue?

    • Mine all worked fine. There were even 2 spare buttons in the box.

      • yep did the replacement buttons still didn't work. just like me to get a dud must be a connection problem because it doesn't seem to detect the top right 2 pink buttons.

      • yep its defiantly a wire issue because tested all buttons they all work its just 2 wires not working. no matter what you plug it into. so its a ide cable issue fault. did a gpiotest on my pi 3 as well no issues with any of the pins.
I am surprised though I ended up with a faulty unit.

  • Hey guys, for anyone who picked up theirs
Was there an instruction manual in the box?
With the IDE connector for the joystick, is the knotch meant to face inward or outward (ie. facing the board or away from)

  • +11

If you are looking for some tips on setup, this is my own setup guide for your reference:

    https://windix.notion.site/RetroPie-with-Jaycar-10inch-Retro…

    • Well done on that mate. Good guide.

    • Nice guide. Since there is only one speaker that is the left stereo does anyone have any idea to add a second speaker for the right stereo? I cannot find any options to switch a game to mono instead of stereo.

      • It's funny that the gamepad has text on it saying it's stereo

      • +1

Yes I think it is totally doable! I can find out some details for you.

      • +2

The sound comes from the "display driver board" fed audio via HDMI. It looks like it only has 1 channel populated. Pic related
Could probaby just add another speaker on the other channel I would assume? I might test it out a bit later.

      • +1

What AmperSand mentioned above is correct.

Just need to use the other 2 pins to populate the right channel.

Note that the board comes with a 3.5 inch socket, but that's line in not line out :( (based on the presence of the 4 pins speaker socket + green 3.5 inch socket)

You can find ready made products like this: https://core-electronics.com.au/stereo-enclosed-speaker-set-… (just for reference, this one also comes with the right plug — JST-PH 2.0mm 4pins: https://core-electronics.com.au/2-0mm-pitch-4-pin-cable-matc…)

Also it is not that difficult to drill holes on arcylic board after some practices to fit the right side speaker (YMMV)

        • Thanks @windix I will check it out.

    • Can I convert it to work with a PC?

  • I've done a full update/upgrade and installed gpionext on retropi
So when I boot up I keep getting the emulationstation "welcome No gamepads detected"
    Is this normal?

    • did you do the gpionext config? and set the mappings up? if you have then you to now run the controller config in retropie. to map it there as well.

you will need a second controller you already paired to do this.

      • I ran the gpionext config via ssh, do i have to run it locally?

        • no I did the same all from ssh, because its much easier to do it that way.

sounds like you did it all right then might just need to setup the controller in emulation station only then.

Just got through that setup in retropie and it will show up for mapping there as well.

But yeah once you do it in both and reboot it will show up

  • ok so I did a gpiotest of my gpio on my pi just in case there was a problem with one or more pins and it check out perfectly fine, I didn't think it would be the issue since I use many hats all the time to do many things that that pi 3. So its defiantly faulty wires on the ide cables in the unit. Going down to Jaycar to get a replacement hopefully they have them in stock still. Other than those 2 buttons not working its been a damn good system, the screen is good the sound is good.

  • Anyone got a shipping confirmation or anything yet? I bought through shop.jaycar and none of the links in my order confirmation work. Getting the feeling I should have done a click and collect instead.

    • Yeah i got mine pretty quickly actually but i dont have much hope for it as its being sent out with Aramex lol. I'm not going to even start on how bad they were as Fastway and still are. Only second to Couriersplease as there probably the worst of all. So we will see what happens.

    • I like got that 5 min after I ordered on sunday lol I would go to support on jaycar and ask.

      • I just checked the tracking it's been picked up and is due today. This should be fun lol

        • -1

yep they all say that mine said that when I ordered lol. contact the support and they will tell u the status.

  • -1

I am curious am I the only one that had hardware issues? with 2 buttons on the unit?

    • No issues on mine, everything maps fine.

      • no issues here either

        • -1

I have a replacement unit now get to see what happens this time the jaycar person said if it happens again it maybe a coding issue with the kit.

        • -1

          are you using a 3b+ or a 4b pi?

            • -1

@191919: hmmm same. maybe it was just bad luck see if it works this time if not I will get another pi and test.

    • I am getting a crash error with the top middle red button and the top right red button doesn't seem to be working. I am on raspberry pi 3

      • ok that sounds like a faulty unit, just let jaycar support know and they will swap it.

        • the two buttons not working issue might have been due to the Pi 3? I haven't got a 3+ to test but I just tried again with a Pi 4 and got it working.

          • @denserham: It was a image problem I did a clean install of retries no issues

  • -2

Has anyone put a Raspberry Pi 5 in this? I’m sure its massive overkill but its looking like I’d be paying about 80 bucks for a 4 with 2GB of RAM or 100 bucks for a 5 with 4gb of RAM, so would probably lean towards the higher end one unless there’s any issues.

    • scroll up lazy

      • -3

        well said :D

      • +4

Most people are saying it will work (in the way of using the same adapters as the RPi4 so it physically fits and turns on). But from from a software point of view GPIOnext = not compatible with new GPIO controller on RPi5 and not compatible with RPi5 at the moment. So you can't interface/assign the arcade joystick/buttons as of yet.

        • This is the answer I was looking for, thank you!

      • I can’t see anyone having said that they’ve actually done it, only that it will fit and connect.

        • +3

I've literally got a RPi5 in mine atm. RPi5 8gb fresh install of raspbian lite + fresh install of retropie.
Have installed GPIOnext but even on the git repo says its not supported as yet.
Have tried a few different things but no luck on GPIOnext front yet.

  • Well, I bought online on Monday morning. Money was deducted from my cred account but Jaycar web site gave me that ‘423 locked’ screen. No confirmation from Jaycar at all. Filed an enquiry Monday at noon time. No reply from Jaycar yet. This morning I went to local Jaycar and there was one sitting on shelf. Got it for $64 dollars. So forget about the online price increase, just go to Jaycar shop, it is still $64. Cheers

    • I’ve done the online chat and they said they think there’s none left in the warehouse. I’ve asked to change to a click and collect order but they e said they’ll get back to me later today on that.

Fingers crossed there’s still some in my store when I get an answer/have the time to pop in.

  • +2

They've apparently had a large number of PayPal payments experience the "Locked" error and their support expect it will take a bit of time to get through the backlog. Definitely get a ticket created if you are affected though.

    • Same here got charged 3 times for 3 failed purchase attempts

      • I emailed about three charges and received a refund on two (one was legit)
I didn't get any response to my email other than the auto response. And nothing about an order being shipped yet.

  • -1

don't forget to setup steamlink on retropie guys works great :D

  • if I get the same issue with the buttons tonight though I know its a programming issue I will need to set and allocated pints to gpionext in order for it to see the pins to make a connection. I think because I use this 3b for many experiments and hats etc. I forget I may have pins used for other configs for other devices. I don't think its the case but we will see lol.

    • +1

Was it due to your experiments and hats etc or did your replacement unit work. Don't keep everyone in suspense.

      • -2

definitely a programming error same issue had to reassign all pins

        • -2

yeah there is some weird things going on with the pi might be the install of retropie or issue with pi 3 no idea

  • Found 2 in stock Altona Jaycar for $64

    • they are still selling in store at this price?

      • That's what I paid in store. I think that's the clearance price if you can find stock.

      • Yes today I picked up another two for $64 each while I was at Jaycar collecting an order.

          • @denserham: Nice one mate, glad you found one. Its a bargain at $64, you would be lucky to find a 10" screen for a pi for $64

  • got a pi 4 one of the last 8gb ones because thats all they had, if the pi 3 rebuild image doesn't work with those 2 buttons then I might end up just doing pi 4 fresh.

  • these are a real steal at 64 bucks

  • +1

Anyone got any hot tips on where to get a Raspberry Pi from, or getting Jaycar to price match?
