5681

50c fares: Qld’s public transport fees slashed, no matter how far you travel.

Public transport fares will be slashed to an unbelievably low price, no matter how far you travel, under a major pre-election trial aimed at easing gridlock and easing cost-of-living pressures.

Update 01/06/2024:

Steven Miles announced Airtrain fares will be slashed by 50% for six months from the same date. Now permanent. See updates below.

Update 30-Nov-2024

The Crisafulli Government Makes 50 Cent Public Transport Fares Permanent

  • The Crisafulli Government is making 50 cent public transport fares permanent on all Translink networks across Queensland.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads will now make the LNP’s 50 cent fares permanent on all Translink public transport networks in Queensland.

Queenslanders will now permanently continue to travel on South East Queensland (SEQ) bus, train, tram and ferry services, as well as Translink urban bus networks across the state, for a flat 50 cent fare.

  • My Uber will go out of business, did the state government think of that?

    • Trains and buses don't deliver food last time I checked, maybe need to switch from rides to deliveries?

      • You won't make any money from deliveries, unless you use a moped.

    • Seriously? People need to get to the train station. The roads should be free for delivery drivers. It should be a huge win for Uber drivers??

Many critical of this trial, seem not from Qld😜
Same as many opposing $1000 electricity rebate Deal🤔

    • +4

Butthurt interstate dreamers waiting for their chance to jump the border, but must oppose until then!

      • +2

Some of us just enjoy shitstiring ,
Especially when politicians are obviously trying to buy your vote with your own money.
Also this means less than nothing for those of us with no easy access to rail service.
        I’m over 20 miles from a station .

        • +1

          I’m over 20 miles from a station

Sorry you lost me there, I don't do freedom units

        • Both major parties buy votes, either directly or indirectly. Those who don't get the money will be the ones complaining.

So, you are ok not having a local rail station if PT is not free, but now it's free (even only for 6 months) you feel it's unfair?
The right thing to do is we all should fight to have a better coverage of rail network, free or otherwise.

  • +1

Just let the Queensland government they can't have our WA GST cash to pay for the shortfall once they realise this was a bad idea.

Also - WA only has a train line that goes 2 stops to each end of the street so really, we have nothing to complain about i guess.

  • +1

    fantastic

  • -2

Hmmmm, maybe laughing boy is trying to promote it to a certain demographic pricing it at 50c?

Either that or he's trying to buy votes before election time at the end of this year after his on camera performance when he was asked about grandmother who was st@bb3d??

  • Shame on NSW government! I was in Madrid a week ago and the bus fare seems 1.5 Euros no matter how far you travel.

    • Yes, but we have slightly lower unemployment than Madrid at 10% and 25% for young peeps….good to keep the costs down when people actually have no jobs.

  • +10

In response to questions ("why isn't it free?") or ("why only 6 months and not permanent?")

    Premier Steven Miles responded:

"If it doesn't work, and if people don't return to public transport, then it won't stack up and it won't continue. So I think I think the trial is a really important part of getting people to, with a sense of urgency, think about changing their travel habits. If it was permanent that they might say, I'll think about it next year, I'll think about it sometime in the future. Whereas with this trial, people know that they need to use it to prove that they want almost free public transport."

"Can I just go to the why not make it free? We didn't talk a lot about that. And the advice to us was that, that if it was free, it would be hard to still require people to tap on and tap off. And without that tap on tap off data. We don't have an accurate picture of how many people are using using public transport. And we need that data not just not just to see whether this trial is successful, but also to manage the network to make sure we're using our resources and rostering staff and all of those things in the way that they need to be based on demand."

    • +3

That sounds like they may actually be trying to achieve something .
I might have to make the effort myself to use it for the trial then ,
if that’s what it takes to get basically free public transport .

      • +1

What I'd really like is for them to have some targets to what means the trial was a success. Like, if usage increases by 40% then we will continue it.
Without that they can just back out easily by saying it was unsuccessful without any actual reasoning. If you give targets it looks less like a short term vote-buying attempt and more like an actual trial.

They had a few trials of 'turn left on red' around me which I thought worked great, and after the trial they just said it was unsuccessful with no actual reasons why…

        • +2

When pushed on morning tv (7) by Nat the presenter this morning SteveO said that if ridership goes back to prepandemic levels plus an increase in line with population growth , then that would be a successful trial and would continue,
he also said that there would be increased rolling stock and I’m assuming the workforce involved to cope at a cost for the trial of $140 million
Hopefully I got all that right, it was on at about 7:30 this morning if someone can get that footage and archive it .

          • +1

@beach bum: Thanks. I may have to stop riding my bike into the city and catch the train for the 6 month period to try to bump the numbers up :-)
Not really in the spirit of the thing, but I'd like to see this be successful.

            • @NigelTufnel: Yes thats the spirit ,
You can take your bike with you to as I understand it ?
Take an iPad and some headphones and I think it could be a good experience.
Coming from the end of the lines through the countryside is a relaxing time .
Some of the old station's towns have some great secondhand/charity shops like Rosewood for example .
I picked up a pair of dragon Kevlar reinforced motorcycle jeans for the missus worth a couple hundred bucks for $2
various Tupperware and complete plates sets from estates and such .
Lots of exploring to be done if you feel adventurous..

  • +1

I use the bcc buses nearly everyday and the amount of people that get on without tapping. Don't think a 50cent fare is gonna stop that from happening. Need to go back to using the front driver's door entrance to stop all the fare avaders from entering through the back door. Also how does affect the 1 hour transfer? on 50 cent fare. Does this mean i could travel from Brisbane to the sunshine coast or gympie for 50cent?

    • +1

Those currently not tapping at all are likely fare evaders who think the current pricing is too expensive.

At $0.50 a ticket, they might start paying.

      • +1

Nothing will change their habit even at .50 cent.

        • +1

Finger cross thay will. You know like when Spotify and Netflix were cheap and good enough to lure people in from pirating?

    • +1

Can you talk to translink or someone to get some transit cops patrolling the bus giving out warnings at least or delaying them a little,
these people are wreaking the whole system more than they know for everyone else .
If they’re crowding up the busses and not being counted they are going to destroy this trial and kill free public transport for everyone .
Let them know how you feel , loud enough to be embarrassing .

      Or

Chewing gum in the hair for fare evaders once the trial starts ,
and anyone who talks on speakerphone too .

under a major pre-election trial aimed at easing gridlock
    under a major pre-election trial
    pre-election

$1000 power bill bribe, now cut price public transport…what's next, free 75" OLEDs for every family to enjoy State of Origin? Public transport in Brisbane is already massively overburdened during peak hours - you know, the time when most people are likely to use public transport - and BCC already has huge issues recruiting & retaining drivers. There is no way people will abandon their cars in droves to cram onto already full buses & trains. Conjuring up the assets, both trains and buses, and the staff required to operate and maintain them is a physical impossibility within the scope of the 6 month "trial". This is a cynical & pointless vote buying exercise. Not saying it won't help anyone, but given the issues already facing the most utilised portion of the network (ie SE QLD), all it will do is reduce Translink's revenue further. The roads will still be clogged between 630-930a and 230-7p.

Also, when did policy announcements become "bargains"? Redirecting more of public money ie taxpayer funds to subsidise pork barrelling doesn't count as a deal.

  • +1

QLD - bring back the 8c fuel subsidy too! 👍

  • Did anybody mention that IT STARTS FROM 5TH AUGUST!!!!
    In 2 & 1/2 months!!!!
Why not start it right now?

    • +1

Time to spread the word, get people planning on how they will change their habits.

So then on day 1 the change will be substantial instead of a slow burn.

      • You have too much faith in people.

    • +2

Hopefully becuase they're buying shiploads of buses and trains ready for the move to PT.

    • Could start it right now if they wave a magic wand?

As staff especially at Translink 131230 has to be notified, gocard machines have to reflect the 50 cents fare etc etc etc etc

  • True , I’ve gotta go into the city this week ,
Luckily I think I can sneak in after peak hour
or I’d have the shits on paying a full fare .

  • Meanwhile in Victoria, we are getting free increases of at least $500 to our land tax this year as part of the COVID debt repayment plan.

    • -4

Good old Dan. Gone, but still screwing people.

      • +2

Good on Liberals voters, still blaming Dan even those he is no longer Premier 👍

  • +3

This promotion will have several benefits, including:

    Increased votes and reputations
    Reduced traffic during peak hours
    Increased interstate and international visitors

It is a significant win for Queenslanders.

    • As the Air Train is not included, it won't benefit Interstate and International visitors.

      • +3

Still a significant win for Queenslanders - I'd be inclined to take a train down to the gold coast just for fun.

  • Excludes the Air train so not really of much interest to a lot of visitors.

    • +1

That train line is privately owned until the early 2030s. Don't know why the LNP gov at the time would do a private contract for something like that.

      • Because that's how the LNP works.
They promise to get something built but just get someone else to pay to build it and charge so that only a few people will be able to use.
But they get to say 'Look at what we did, and we hardly spent anything!'.

  • I'm guessing this doesn't include the airtrain (to or from airport)?

    • See comment above for the answer - thanks Ade99!

    • include the airtrain ?

      Nope …

      (for others to read :-)

    • -1

Or the Gold Coast light rail?

  • Finally the price we are paying, matches the service we are getting.

    • The service people are getting especially poor customer service from Translink or Transtink, public transport should be free?

  • +2

Gotta be interesting how packed the trains will be. I hope they add more in the rotation. Love this though as a daily PT customer.

  • Cool. What's the furtherest a person can go on 50c then from central Brisbane?

    • Probably Gympie (Gympie North)

You can go to Noosa Heads via Cooroy for $2 return.

      • So it is not $1 return 2 X 50 cents?

        • +1

I assume it is 2 journeys each way. Brisbane to Cooroy by train, then get the bus outside the train station to Noosa.

          • @BOGOF: Has to be within 2 hours to be a continuation journey I believe.

  • +1

Use it or lose it ,
every one better start packing the trains and buses full to bursting when the trial starts to the end of February if you want free buses and trains.

  • +2

This is awesome it makes trips to Brisbane and the Gold Coast very affordable and will hopefully get a few cars off the road.

The problem always was as soon as you had two people in one car it would be cheaper and more convenient to drive now there are two desirable options!

    • +1

exactly - parking for me is around $15/day versus $8 via trains. It take the same time in peak hour, and half the time in non-peak hours.

      • +1

That's excellent! In August you'll even be able to buy yourself a beverage if you wish and still be ahead!

Feels good to be excited about a change that the government has made :)

        • +2

          or multiple beverages.

Gotta stay true to the OzBargain ways.

I am definitely excited for this change. I will definitely won't be driving into work as much.

  • -4

Glad Im not QLD tax payer

    • +1

Don't be jealous you're in shytney, new south fails

      • -2

Dont really care about fails or whatever as long as I dont need to pay for others to use the things Ill never use and never benefits me

        • You don't partake in anything funded by the taxpayer?

          • @smartazz104: If you mean the road Im on that Ive paid in petrol then yes, other than that mostlikely forever will benefits people like me only maybe say national defense etc will protect me from safe.

            • @yuisakas: Never used medicare (lucky you)?
Never had a child educated in school (yes private schools get tax money)?
Never been to a park (sad)?
Never been to an art gallery or museum?
Never used electricity (lots of gov subsidies all over the place)?

              • -1

@NigelTufnel: Thats right, maybe if I can turn the volume to 11,I can use more electricity and get lots of gov subsidies other than that, take the questions you asked to ask myself,Am I benefit any,the answer is No

                • +1

@yuisakas: Will now I know you're full of it… Or living a very odd life.

  • Those who think the 50 cents fare have something to do with the upcoming election in October

Haven't done their maths homework and should visit https://www.timeanddate.com/date/dateadd.html

As 6 months from 6th August is 6th February 2024.

    • -3

I know things are backwards in Queensland but this seems ridiculous

      • 50 cents fare to get more people to use public transport is ridiculous??? 🤔🤔🤔

        • It was a joke about using a date in the past (6 February 2024) as one of the dates in the announced 6 month period, implying Queensland is so backwards the time runs backwards up there.

The announcement itself is fine (but clearly set up to be a vote winner in the upcoming election, your confusion with dates notwithstanding)

  • +1

I can see a lot of people commuting between BNE - GC - SC on the weekends - family trips will get a lot more accessible.

    • Gold coast maybe, but Sunny coast is still a pain to do on public transport, even if it was 50c. Nearest train to the coast is Landsborough. Probably adding at least an extra hour to your journey each way depending on where you start.
Might be a decent option for Australia Zoo though.

      • To go to Bribie island you can get the train to Caboolture and bus to bribie , that might be the better option if you just want an uncrowded beach north of the city that you don’t have to travel too far to get to and especially if you have small kids or non swimmers as it’s in behind Moreton island and usually very small if any swell , like a lake at the northern end of Moreton Bay there , you won’t need a surfboard , maybe an air mattress.
Police patrol in a 4wd on the beach all weekend long so it’s safe as houses also .

  • -1

Can I do a trip from Brisbane to Cairns on train for 50cents ?

  • +3

Tips: To avoid the $40 AirTrain fare, use Gold Coast airport for $1 return.

  • I have never traveled to QLD. I am thinking to go from Sydney Central station to Brisbane by train in months. Not by plane (personal reason).

Any good itinerary from Brisbane for travelling by public transport to anywhere in QLD in few days? Or should I ask AI, lol. Maybe I'll make a list for travelling around QLD from google maps as I did previously in other cities.

    • …..not worth it imo

  • +2

Looks like QLD has the Victoria playbook down pat - spend the future generations money now to get re-elected.

Enjoy 50 cent public transport today, and record-level of $172bn debt tomorrow. Meanwhile the tossers spending your money to buy your vote will have long gone.

    Sounds like a Dick move.

Whilst I live in Victoria, the only way or QLD to get out of that kind of record level debt is a Federal bail out, which means we'll all be paying for it. Just like QLDers will be paying to get Victoria out of the biggest debt-hole yet.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-06-11/queensland-budget-202…

    • +2

A dick move is using public money to subsidise private transport — roads, traffic lights, signage, policing, etc — while charging the public for public transport.

  • How good is Queensland!!!
    (Statement, not question!)

  • +2

Just checking this is starting today, 5th Aug..?

    • +2

      Yes

  • How do you promote this page back up to the front .
This subsidy is only for the next few months and if not enough people use it and actually tap on and off it will be withdrawn next year .

    • think just about everyone knows

  • Yea I know it’s all was all over commercial news but a lot of people don’t watch the bad news anymore and even those that do , most have short memories without being reminded constantly if they’re not regular users of public transport .
Also international and domestic travellers , even if it’s word of mouth from locals that have had their memories jogged ,
but yes , it probably won’t do much perhaps.
It would be nice to have this as a permanent addition to the train , bus and light rail network , and that only happens apparently if the numbers using it go back up massively .

  • +1

Looks like it's permanent no matter which party wins:
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-09-15/qld-50-cent-public-tr…

    • +2

I hope so. Spending less on public transport allows the public to travel to more places and spend more money at businesses in those places.

Not to mention how much it will increase ridership on the Brisbane Metro.

  • +3

    The Crisafulli Government?

So we no longer have a Queensland Government? Are LNP financing this from their own pockets? It is taxpayer money. Also this was not LNP policy. I looks like their are now taking credit.

It would be ok to say something like The Crisafulli Administration
