Most ISPs charge for a static IP. What’s the issue?

    • -2

      When have Exetel done this?

      • Other ISPs do, from a business perspective Exetel must have made the judgement they may as well charge as well.

So what exactly is your point in posting? I've made a post advising that they appear to have made a 'policy' change.

What has your post added to the discussion?

Because 'some other' RSP's charge for a static IP I shouldn't have posted to let current/future Exetel customers know?

  • What you mean, now? Look like it been for while ?

Why do you even need static ip, just use something like duckdns.

  • "If you want to opt out of CGNAT and get a static IP"

You know you can opt out of CGNAT without getting a static IP right?

Just use duckdns or somethign similar.

  • Easy enough to use (FREE) Tailscale and have access to anything you desire inside your network.

This is Ozbargain, we tell each other about deals where we can save money, we also tell each other about when companies remove value-add on which will now cost us money.

You can use 'insert tailscale, etc, etc' or 'insert company' has always charged you is a bullshit reply.

You lot need to hand in your Ozbargain cards today.

    • Use duckdns/pay $5/change the isp and move on. Majority of users don't need static ip and it's extra cost for ISPs. I been using duckdns for like 10y without any issues.

It appears Exetel are just like Superloop now with customers now using Superloops backend.

  • Is there any benefit from having a static ip?

    • -1

Yes, can be beneficial in a number of cases such as accessing IP cameras - the real issue is that CGNAT is now the default, the ability to turn it off on the member portal has been removed.

The advice to opt out of CGNAT at the moment seems to be to call support but it probably won't be long until that option is removed too.

      • Thanks… I’m on some cheapo exetel plan, I’ll have to look into it… someone posted a deal with pineapplenet (isp). Seems like a good deal, unavailable at my address.

Have a look at LeapTel, they run their intro pricing for 12 months which is pretty good value, they don't have a 30 day notice period when you leave like Exetel either.

Ask Exetel support to turn off Carrier Grade NAT for $0. A static IP isn't necessary for most users.
