  • "A bit old", but :)

  • +1

    $249 Dell 5400 listing says

Condition: Good cosmetic condition, may have some scratches wear and marks. Battery Health 60% and above.

Yeah that's concerning especially when these didn't have amazing battery health to start with, this is basically a 14-inch desktop. I guess you can move from charger to charger?

Refurb doesn't seem to mean what it uses to… :(

      • +4

Would be worth $179 if genuinely refurbished, i.e. a new battery and case.
"refurb" now means the seller is untruthful. Alt least they are honest that the price has only dropped by $10.

        • +9

Yeah so many sellers use "refurbished" and "used" interchangeably that refurb has lost its meaning.

Refurbish: renovate and redecorate, to make improvements or repairs to, rebuild or replenish with all new material; to restore to original (or better) working order and appearance

Apparently refurb here means "company e-waste heavily used and constantly plugged in for 8 years".

Refurb these days means seller bought a bulk lot of ex govt. machines from Grays, Pickles or MGS, wiped them over with an alcohol wipe and puts them up for sale for 2x what they paid.

        • +2

"wiped them over with an alcohol wipe and " …. Are you sure they even do this ..?? :)

          • +5

@chutibuti: 100% sure. They just use the same wipe they've used for the last 100 machines. It's how you get those genuine refurb dirt streaks all over the screen. Extra bonus points if you take of the coating while you do it, and extra extra bonus points if you really grind in some deep scratches.

        • I think they get them free. Just have to regularly pick up (at least at a place I used to work)

What have you done to refurbish these?

    • No response……

    • Wiped it with a wet cloth I assume.

How about let’s call it Dealer Used rather than refurb.

  • Can't officially run win 11, no deal

    • +2

You can install fedora linux on it. I recommend fedora silverblue version for those new to it.

      • can it run all windows programs?

        • +1

It can run a lot of windows programs, but not all.
There are also Linux versions or variations of many windows programs too. There are a lot of free software as well.
I've seen it often mentioned online that even gaming has improved on Linux, thanks to Steam.

  • It's not clear what people's expectations are, but these were Lenovo's top tier business laptops, with excellent original build quality. Sure, they're ~8y old, but spare parts like a fresh battery are easy to come by (and according to a quick search, under $50). Regardless of the wording of the listing, even if used and not refurb, they appear reasonable value, if pretty anaemic from a performance PoV (U-series i5).

  • This is 100% better than the sh1t being served at the shops.

Move to Linux Mint afterwards (or right away).

I have this exact laptop as a "daily driver" on my tv. Only thing it can't do is 4K but meh

  • @MetroCom does this come with 3 cell or 6 cell battery?

    • Whatever it comes with will need replacing. It's a 7+ year old model so I wouldn't be expecting the batteries to be of much use.

      • Alleged 70% capacity - if true 6 cell would be usable at least , 3 cell got to add the price of a battery for sure I reckon
