You can disable Plex's UPNP and set the forwarding up yourself. It's just a convenience thing.
UPNP is just random automatic port forwarding, the concern is having open ports and relying on the exposed services (plex) security
My leechers love my Plex 🤣
JEEEELLLYYFFIINNN
Still dont know why anyone pays for Plex.. and this is ozb no less
Been using free version since 10 years with no bothering ads. Thought it's time to pay back to dev. It saved me a lot from not renting or buying tickets. It's just a fraction of cost of what I get in return. YMMV
why don't you think the same way for content creators?
I strongly feel plex is a worthy content, hence paid creator/developer
because some of us value our time as well. Plex for all its issues beats out the free alternatives for supportability and simplicity. I have used everything from XBMC through to Jellyfin with Kodi and while hands down the features you get are better and free the effort to keep it all running and pain of clunky crappy clients is just not worth the effort.
For the advdanced music features of the best music player around - Plexamp. That's why :)
Been using it for 2+ years and got lifetime Plex Pass for around $110 back in the day. MORE than paid for itself.
To support the company that make the product that me and my whole family and a bunch of friends all use literally daily. Is that an OK reason?
This or stremio + real debrid?
Depends if you plan on setting up a server with lots of storage and want to download and host all of your own media. The only thing they share in common is watching media, the rest is completely different. They're not really equivalent.
Is there a minimum internet speed required for streamio+rd?
stremio+rd is the option that would require no server on your end. Stremio is a sort of latest content compiler (but not the actual files) for which you can install plugins that will scrape torrent sites for files relating to said content. real debrid (rd) is a provider that caches those torrent files and serves them to you at your maximum internet speed. Real debrid (or all debrid, or premiumise, there are heaps of these debrid services) is what makes this solution so nice, often torrent files won't max out your internet speed because it heavily depends on the upload speed of those seeding it to you, so you will get buffering. It also means your ip is hidden, safety etc etc. Think of stremio+rd like a slightly less polished Netflix but with all the content you could imagine on it. Less polished because it will scrape a bunch of files that relate to that movie for example and then you will want to make sure you pick a file that is the right quality for you, not too large of a file size that it is literally impossible for your internet to stream it, but also not too small that it is crappy quality. Right language, HDR, dolby etc.
Plex is the one that you self host and have your own media files that you then stream to yourself and if you plan on streaming outside your network then yes your internet upload speed is very important because it needs to be able upload it in real time. Even more so if you plan on sharing it with others.
This or stremio + real debrid?
Por qué no los dos?
Plex + Real Debrid, best of both worlds.
Plex is better than Stremio ?
Go Stremio (with or without rd). Plex is for cataloguing and playing your downloads and I hardly ever use it now, certainly wouldn't pay for a pass, which you can get via a modded app anyway. I just stream everything, can't be bothered downloading anymore, and I got sick of having to rescan my libraries every few months because Plex threw a wobbly.
Depends if you are a digital hoarder.
The latter is a great setup, still impressed..
I have the big 3 (Plex, emby, jellyfin).
In the early days I use to love Plex, but it seems to be getting worse and worse with every change they make.
Right now I prefer emby
But if you want to get setup on a budget, use jellyfin
I never really grew on emby, I thought the ui looked kinda ugly.
I run both Jellyfin and Plex, let my users choose what they want to use. I prefer Jellyfin all-round, but often use Plex just because I paid for the pass.
I use custom CSS to make jellyfin look prettier so that might be why I don't think it looks ass like the others.
Edit: I forgot to attach my question, what makes you pick emby of them all?
Good question.
I find that when comparing emby with jellyfin, emby is just more polished on each of the features.
When I started jellyfin wasn't a thing, so I had both Plex and emby running, and like you I let my users decide, 4/5 of them prefer emby. I think from what they were saying is that emby "just worked", apparently when accessing from outside of the network Plex had more trouble (not sure if that's fixed since).
Then when jellyfin came I tried that aswell, and got the users to try it. All 7 of my users now prefer emby…. however I can't confidently say that was fair experiment as they have gotten use to emby.
Not worth paying to play your own media from your own server. Jellyfin is mature enough and Plex's "suggestions" sucks and it collects a lot of data. Use Findroid for Android as a client.
Does plex stream the content library from Amazon prime oz or US? And why do I get ads when I don't from prime?
It has nothing to do with prime. You supply your own media for Plex.
But with the plex app on phones/tablets, it already knows about my streaming apps and makes available that content within plex but gives me ads!?
You're talking about the discovery feature. Plex doesn't play that content within its own app unless it has that content available within its own library, which might be why you're getting ads. I'd suggest reading up on how it works.
Should have got one of these passes when they were $75 years ago.
Don't actually need it at all though, but plex amp would be kind of cool.
Google TV and Kodi usually does the job (and Stremio makes all redundant lol)
Plexamp is now free for all Plex users, though some niche features are still Plex Pass only.
Ah nice. I got volumio premium lifetime for my music streamer but otherwise would be a good option.
The problem in this household is, we have 4 streaming services,+ (Netflix, Disney+, Prime, and Stan) and all I've been wanting to do the last 2 weeks, is throw in a movie night for the kids, to watch one of my favourites - "How to Train Your Dragon" (the first one). To add insult to injury, we have the DVD, which is region locked because it's a US copy, and doesn't run on Xbox One because it is AU copy.
It's no wonder DVD went to die, and a surprise still, that streaming services have such a huge gap (like smaller libraries, and constantly removing their own content).
Hosting your own server is the way to go.
Any cheap DVD player is unlocked these days, funny the expensive Sony ones were region locked.
If you got a DVD burner just rip it.
Sounds like you need to sort out a few things, I'd look at the Reddit thread on Stremio, no need to pay for too many subs, and NF way over priced now. Prime is actually alright as it's free with the prime shipping service anyway.
Thats true; though another DVD player - so much more effort than finding it elsewhere online. Even getting the DVD up and running; it would be standard definition on an 85" TV, and the start of the DVD has a bunch of ads that can't be skipped before the movie can be started. (not to mention looking for the DVD, taking up storage; preventing kids damaging the disc etc.)
Definitely checking out Stremio reddit link from above, was unaware of the service before; looks great. Also looking into hosting Plex as I have a server running very low loads at the moment anyway.
I think a combination of Stremio; and potentially Plex is the future of our household. Thanks! :)
Yeah I used to rip mostly CDs but also DVDs /BR, remove all the crap and region locks, Remux, cover art the whole lot. Not worth it now and my BR burner doesn't even fit in the case. I'm sure you could buy or rent the odd movie instead from Google/YouTube etc.
I'm very impressed with it all.
This guide is fantastic:

Just ensure to install the latest CyberFlix Catalog, not sure if they've fixed the link:
Have been usiung Plex since 2017, and the lifetime pass is one of the best software purchases I've ever made. Paid for itself many times over by it's simplicity for all the family to use
What does the Plex subscription do anyway, havent been able to figure it out? Been running Plex for free on my home windows media server, and watch my downloaded content no problems from my TV (via amazon firestick).
It occasionally says something about HDR content and i need to pay, but plays the video anyway.
I think if you want to stream to a phone you need it pay, is that right?

thanks
because we dont use the Plex mobile app, sounds like using the free version to watch stuff on a TV will continue being fine, so probably not worth paying even if there's a nice discount
Slightly off topic but can anyone suggest how I might run madVR + Netflix + prime + a remote control for an HDR 4k projector? I'm a noob to all of this.
It seems like their should be an open source app that can do all this on a HTPC?
For those who are not sure what Plex is, this should give you a really good explanation of what Plex does and does not.

Still waiting on an Emby Premiere deal…
i use plex and jellyfin. they both crash randomly often enough that i wouldnt spend cash on them. i use plex because its slightly more stable.
Method of deduction would suggest it could be your setup/system
Does anyone know if plex is planning on an EOFY sale?
Anyway I found and posted this - hopefully it tides me over til there's another sale
I purchased this last year and for me it wasn't worth the money.
I only bought it to watch my plex remotely, but it appears to do it via UPNP which isn't the most secure.
I don't even use it now, just set my NAS up with Tailscale which is free.
Also downloading movies to watch on a device offline is so damn broken
