I am not buying anything from Kogan smart home series ever again, all 5 of my Kogan smart plugs died or failed in different ways lol

    • +2

Try contacting support. They refunded me when my smart plug died. Was well beyond the warranty period

You work at Kogan? Can’t you help @drasticmeasures1337?

        • Nope just a rep

      • Is there a helpdesk number?

I flashed the plugs with ESPHome firmware and it's clear they've been disassembled / modified / had some soldering done. I assume I'd have to fight Kogan over this (I did not cause any of those failures but they'd probably just say I did and I'd have to prove otherwise etc) and it's just not worth my time.

I've managed to repair one by replacing a capacitor that literally exploded. Seems like the design Kogan used (the particular plug model is no longer on sale) just use cheap, crappy capacitors that fail over time.

2 had caps explode, 3 will randomly reboot causing anything connected to them to toggle off/on at random times, sometimes indefinitely every 2-3 seconds.

I assume I could fix the others by replacing the exact same crappy cap as well, it's just a pain to do.

Some other Crest smart plugs that I got from Big W had the same design, exactly same capacitors, and are also failing in the same way.

They're all cheap clones and I just wouldn't trust any Kogan plugs in the future.

      • So you must have been lucky, I basically got a response from Kogan saying out of warranty.

I apologise for the issues you're having with your Kogan SmarterHome™ Smart Plug With Energy Meter & 5V 2.4A USB Ports and for the inconvenience this has caused you.
Also, I appreciate your effort in providing the attached video.
According to our records, your item was purchased on xx for $39.99. To date, yy months have passed since purchase, exceeding the coverage period provided under our Kogan.com Minimum Voluntary Warranty Policy.
Given the above, we are unable to cover this for you.
I know that this is not the response you were hoping for and I apologise once again for the trouble you have encountered.
If you have any questions at all, or if you do not agree with our response, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch and feel free to let me know.

    • I had one from a four pack die and they sent me another four pack. Rare story of being happy with Kogan's customer service

      • +1

I had 2 die a few days after warranty 1 always had a humming sound. Another one started switching on/off and actually damaged the item that was plugged into it because of all the power cycles.
I really had/have no hope that Kogan would replace, but the ozbargainer in me (reading about somebody that did get replacement) made me create a ticket anyway..

Not a pricing error. Prices for the multi-packs have been updated to $19.99 for 2, or $24.99 for 3.

OP I hope you didn't buy a heap of single switches at $15 each before they adjusted the prices!

    • +4

I think those prices are for the number of buttons on a unit. I.e. 1x switch which has 2x buttons on it costs $19.99.

Damn you're right. Reading is hard 😔. I knew I should have had coffee before replying.

        • +1

I was about to post the exact same thing right before going to sleep last night but somehow noticed my mistake and didn't lol.

  • So this works with lenovo bulbs and xiaomi light strip?

    • Yes and no. It's just a smart switch to replace your wall switch and make "dumb" lights smart. I know that Tuya switches on custom firmware can decouple buttons from relays to enable control of smart lights. But not sure if the original firmware would allow you to do so.

  • So is this used to connect to smart bulbs or old regular light bulbs and make them smart?

    • The smart switch turns on and off smartly, so you can use dumb lights

Has anyone used this and can provide a review? Looking to switch my home to smart switches and this seems like a great deal.

  • Any options for something similar but battery powered?

    • Use a Zigbee remote.
Phillips Hue Tap Dial is the fanciest

    • If you're needing battery powered because you don't have a neutral wire going to your existing switches, look at the Sonoff ZBMINI-L ( https://itead.cc/product/sonoff-zbminil2-extreme-zigbee-smar… )

You'll need a Zigbee hub. I use theirs, but others may work.

      • I was thinking people would need a battery-powered switch to save up on electrician fees? Can't replace light switches without an electrician, can I?

        • Not legally or safely. Wouldn't risk it especially if you're asking the question

  • Likely that this one can be hooked into Homebridge / Apple Home via Tuya?

    • I don't know about the Apple Home ecosystem but Kogan SmarterHome stuff is all Tuya as far as I know.

  • Doesn't seem like these dim

  • What server/ecosystem does this run on? tuya whitelabel? How is this in home assistant?
