$100 Sign up credit for new customers. Better than some of the others on offer. Good for churners who have recently done AGL and Origin.

For new customers to Momentum only.

T&C's:

  • When churning electricity providers is there any disruption to service? Can you pick a date with a new provider?

      1) None whatsoever.
      2) Generally not. You'll usually be cut over as soon as the new provider can get it done. There may be some that let you nominate a date, but I've never encountered one.

        I had energy australia tell me they could nominate a date, go through the entire signup process, then when I told them what date I wanted they said they couldn't do it. Stuff em.

      Have churned multiple times now. No disruption to electricity (unlike nbn), can also set a further date to help with billing cycles. But normally the previous provider just charges you the incremental amount from your last billing cycle. Churning is the way to go. Used to get $300-$400 per month bills, now last 3 months its around $150-$180 with the credits, makes a big difference.

      • how often do you churn? every 3 months or when a new offer comes you just churn out just like that?

        • You have to be wary of credit checks, you don't want too many on your file

            @BargainMe: what credit checks happen? this isn't applying for a credit card…?

            • @prankster: Yes, credit checks on a fixed service at a known address seem absurd, especially when you pick the prepay option, looking at you OVO Energy.

              The absolute worst is when an NBN provider does it. It's prepaid and a fixed amount and can be terminated instantly, so… what credit are you providing that warrants a credit check?

            • @prankster: They refused to have you sign up. I tried with momemtum and atlinta both companies dont take you as a customer instantly. It just small line on your credit report but they can refuse your application

          • @BargainMe: Yes, this is really annoying when you want to churn electricity companies in a short space of time.

            My credit score has dropped from Excellent to Good in like 2 months simply because of credit checks done when signing up to new electricity providers.

        • I do it about every three months - long enough to get my Shopback payment (where the retailer is participating), and run down the $200 credits I've been getting (low usage).

    I've found it really hard to move anywhere from Globird cause they keep coming up as the cheapest

    • i was actually looking into globird, mainly they have this 12-2pm free energy (and was thinking to do my hot water system during this time), rates are ok, solar rate is low at 5 cents

      how is globird overal?
      where's their call centre? lol

      • just review your rates on regular basis with globird, they get you in on good discount then jack up the rates

          • @simplerick: yeah you sign up to the year plan but you'd hope they wouldn't raise the rates like a month later.

            i know its subject to change but i'm with energy australia and was on the ongoing plan but its for a year but they never hiked up the rates, it was only until after it finished after a year then i had to go onto one of their new plans (sadly)

    That's one time benefit only though. What one needs to consider is the per kWH cost to understand ongoing benefits.

    142.45 daily supply charge for electricity in 2065. Even with $100 credit that is obscene.

    • Yeah, seriously. Better sweeteners available atm, but I'd be churning into Momentum for a month or so to soak up the $150 credit and leaving.

    I can't move away from AGL since my FiT is quite good at 20c/kwh (worth about $1,200 a year) and no other supplier seems to offer that rate anymore

  • Can you normally transfer credit to a new provider when you churn? What happens if you get a govt rebate that sits in your account and then you switch providers?

    • Usually you get refunded any credit balance (other than those given by the retailer). Given the government will be putting cash into your account, assume they'd be obligated to refund to the holder.

    • So denied for various reasons? Do they tell you why?

    • I got denied for credit criteria and my credit is very good according to credit scores.

    • Appears this was credit related, have churned gas and electricity almost monthly and got a notice from WISR today to find my Equifax credit score has dropped almost 200 with the only enquiries being utilities. Haven't missed a single payment on any credit in the 15 years I've had credit but gets tanked by churning utilities lol

      • Dude, this is exactly what has happened to me over span of like 2 or so months

        Gone from Excellent Rating to 'Good' all because of 3 utility enquiries in that small space of time

        Always make my payments on time, never late. This is something to really be wary of when churning anything these days that does credit checks!
