I have recently received quote for an electric heat pump installation at my place (replacing old gas water heater). I was told I would receive a "free" heat pump but will need to pay installation charges.
Looking at the vic solar website, it says I will receive a grant of around $3000 not a free heat pump.
So my question is, have the prices of heat pumps been jacked up so all the grant goes towards purchasing the pump and we're still paying $1300 out of pocket for installation charges? Are the installation charges reasonable?
Every company I spoke to gave me the same quote. Sounds awfully suspicious to me.

I agree. I gave up on ducted heater replacement when I was quoted around $6000 for a 5 room (3bed + 2living) installation. These are too damn expensive.
Gas or reverse cycle?
Decommission Gas Ducted Heater and replace it with a Reverse Cycle Unit. Mine was for a 3 bedroom plus an office system.
@geekcohen: Wait, $6000 to pull out the gas heater and put in an electric unit??? I thought all the existing ducts remain, and just need to swap the units themselves?
Mine was the same quote, and there was a $2,000 fee for a tin roof…….
Mine was the same! Put the whole thing on hold.
I thought the rebate was only $1,000?
No, it is not 1000. Check ut vicsolar website.
The hot water rebate is $1k but there are other rebates also applicable
Ok.
What other rebates apply to the solar boosted heat pump HWS?
If it was completely free, I would be all for it, but I am going to wait for my gas system to die before replacing it, unless its 100% free.
you can get the free ones (or very cheap ones), but they'll probably last 6 months
Guaranteed price jack. All smoke and mirrors.
My 6.6kw solar system. I was able to get a itemised quote and the cost of install was $2500 which was 3 guys for 4 hours.
Where as all the other ones were $2k more for exactly same parts and materials so you know kind of excess profits they were making.
Bingo, My solar was the same cost.
Corporate greed at work under the guise of being a "government trusted company" that had jumped through a few hoops and cradled the right set of balls.
Subsidies like this encourage price jacking, as the seller now knows there a lump of money available and pepole are wanting to take advantage of it.
These programs always result in the suppliers taking most of the rebate for themselves.
The unfortunate truth is these offers are only available “through accredited suppliers”… which means they can charge whatever they like for the units themselves.
I was looking at the same program to replace our ducted gas heater with split systems - and found I could buy the units from other suppliers for far far cheaper
