ANZ Credit Card Application - out Source Call Centre

I applied for ANZ credit card for 100,000 points and got declined. I kinda guessed the outcome based on my churning profile. Got rejected via Amex last month also due to churning.

Here is the problem: ANZ using overseas staff and they barely speak English with a very strong accent. Woo woo dont attack me yet. I have a strong accent too, but at least I noticed that and I speak very clearly and slow. The representative spoke very fast and chewing the words (like the captain on your flight speaks). and here is the funny part.

*I am Health Care Worker and I received Salary Packaging.

Him: What is the deductions that occur every month?
Me: That is my salary packaging
Him: What's that for?
Me: Hmm to save money on tax? For certain amount I don't have to pay tax / tax free.
Him: But what is that for?
Me: hmmm as I just explained to you. That's saving from tax. It's benefit from my work place.
Him; I mean the money. What is that for?
Me: Hmm the money? I spend/save as usual like the taxed money. It is just No-Tax.
Him: No you don't understand?
Me: I guess so. I don't really understand your question.
Him: Nevermind. We can't offer you at this time. Bla bla bla

He was asking what you’re spending the money on in relation to the salary packaging?

That's a very general question. As I had answered to all the expenses upon my application.

can't imagine where the confusion arose OP

  • ANZ have the. worst. credit card application process. Took them 2 months to approve me - now I've got my signon points going to churn out. Not looking forward to trying again in 12-18 months time

St George screwed me upside down and will avoid them and whoever owns them.

Got an approval offer, was told to go into the bank to verify ID and collect new card as it was ready. Went to nominated bank, per letter, and was told they had no idea and after speaking to someone, said I had to verify ID with their call centre or some nonsense and my card has not yet been approved. I asked them to accept my ID in branch and they said they couldn't do it .. seriously? making up rules as we go, idk?

Told them to f off and have never gone back

      • When I refinanced to Bank of Melb (St George) myself and partner had to drive 1hr 40 to melbourne (closest branch) to verify our ID because their online service kept rejecting it

  • You see they need to do the off-shoring to increase profits & also offer enticing products like the one for which you have applied.

ANZ is the worst process ever - will never go through it again

  • Usually they ask the following:
    1. How much you got every month?
    2. How much spend - for food, loan, rent, car, .etc….

Just throw them any numbers and you will be ok.
    Like normal salary - $90-100k
    Spending: $2k rent, $1k food, $1500 bills/clothes.

  • I too received a (missed) call from ANZ and yes it was from an overseas call centre…. Not sure what its about but they'll call me back tomorrow. I think for me NAB has the smoothest credit card application experience so far…

  • They're asking you where the money goes. Some people salary sacrifice into super, some use salsac for novated lease, some salsac into mortgage or rent. You could explain that it comes back to your bank account as tax-free income for living expenses, assuming that's where yours is going.
