The Push-up Challenge 2024 - Join The OzBargain Team to Raise Fund for Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Awareness

This is the third year we are doing this (posts from 2022 and 2023). We would like to invite ozbargainers to join The Push-Up Challenge as Team OzBargain to raise fund for suicide prevention & mental health awareness.

The Push-Up Challenge is Australia's largest mental health and fitness event. Each year, hundreds of thousands of Australians take up the challenge to complete a set number of push-ups that represent the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in the most recent year of available data. We educate participants with daily mental health facts, and participants have the opportunity to fundraise for one of our chosen mental health charities.

For this year,

  • Participants will need to do 3,249 push-ups over 24 days, between 5-28th of June. That number represents the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2022. You can then use this challenge to raise awareness from family, friends, colleagues or wider community of this issue and call for donation.

  • To be part of Team OzBargain you'll need to sign up to the challenge and join the team. Please note that a "team" has a cap of 10 members, and currently there are only 6 places left. If there are more people interested, we can have other members creating 2nd, 3rd team, etc (as long as "OzBargain" is in the team name) and I can organise a community of teams to overcome that 10 members limit.

  • If you are thinking of donating to the cause of suicide prevention and mental health awareness, you can donate to Team OzBargain or specific individuals. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

  • Same as last year, OzBargain will donate $100 to each of its team members (or other OzBargain teams if there are any) who have logged at least 50% of the overall push-ups, i.e. we'll donate once you reached 1,625 push-ups. Due to the possibility of having multiple teams, the overall donation from OzBargain will be capped at $2,000 (just in case).

keen to give it another go this year.

    registered.
can you do all of them in one go? asking for Jimothy
    .

    • Does a proctor come to your house to observe the pushups? They may prefer you do them all in one go instead of visiting every day for 25 days straight to see you do 140 at a time.

    • You can't. It actually has a scheduled program of doing a fixed number of pushups for each day — ranging from maybe 80 on some days and 250 on other day.

  • I remember doing this in my previous employment last year for mental health awareness.

A month after, I emailed the management and operations, team I am being overworked unnecessarily and it is affecting my mental health because quality procedures are not being followed by the operations team and I have to cover for this and gave them the solutions too.
Did not receive a single reply.

RUOK is more of a rhetorical question when it comes to the workplace

      • +2

It's like "how do you do", it's less a question and more an acknowledgement.

      here, from 2023 post.

      • Ah yep that's the one! Someone bumped up the 2023 post haha

        • I could swear I saw something in 2022 as well…

  • nice, didn't know this was going on at OzB

  • I’d love to join but sadly I can’t do a single pushup 😂🥲

there are easy variants. If you can raise a glass of beer, you and do a pushup

    • Also can do something else instead of pushups (e.g. squats)

  • a tip that I gave last year.

pushups are great. just dont lose form.
do not be afraid to take the easy options -> doing it on the knees or substitutions.
I would take doing push ups from the knees first over substitutions. on 100+ days, it really hurts, even doing pushups from the knees.

it is helpful to swap pushups to inverted rows to balance the pushing muscles with the pulling muscles. (look up inverted rows)

  • Looks like now we have 10 people in the OzBargain team. If anyone else is interested they might want to create their own teams.

  • One more sleep before the challenge, how's everyone's "training"? I am looking forward to the whole month of sore arms. Or maybe I will do 50% pushups & 50% squats this year.

    • "training", I opened the ap….
      .

      • "training", I opened the ap….

surely that counts for at least 12 push ups…..

but seriously, I have swam laps 3 times in the last 2 weeks to unseize muscles.

It's the BOGOF donation matching day today! Time to bug your family, friends, colleagues and random ozbargainers to support the cause.

  • I am a bit late. I joined today and it still allowed me to join the team. Do I still count as part of the team?
I am happy to do the pushups in the remaining days.

    • +1

No problem. You have missed a few days, but if you can manage to do 1,625 (50% of the full amount) by the end of the event, we'll still put in $100 donation.

If you take on this challenge, don't just stop once June 28th passes.

Incorporate it into your daily routine and become stronger forever.

  • How does increased community awareness help people who aren't right in the head? People usually aren't born with broken brains. They used to feel okay once, but now they are lethargic/miserable/hearing voices/performing handwashing rituals/frightened to leave the house/barely eating, etc. What exactly are these charities doing with they money they receive to help those afflicted? Saying "It's okay not to be ok" doesn't cure a suicidal ideated person.

All GPs do is prescribe SSRIs. If they don't work (they are only slightly better than placebo), then you are in a world of pain. Psychiatrists have high gap fees (if you are seriously mentally ill you will have great difficulty holding down a job). Experimental treatments are difficult to access and tend to be very expensive (eg ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA, ketamine, transcranial magnetic stimulation, implanted vagus nerve stimulator, etc). Even GABAergics can be difficult to get a prescription for (eg benzodiazepines, Stillnox/Zolpidem). All public hospitals do is prescribe anti-psychotics and fry your brain (ECT, 110 volts across the frontal lobe inducing a 30 second seizure that can cause bone breakages if a patient isn't given a paralytic like succinycholine).

We need better treatments, and the treatments need to be available to people who cannot afford private hospitals. Lobby for that charities. Fund the experimental treatments; make them available to low cost.

  • today's target - 157 push ups !

  • 174!! but can mixed up (pushups, situps, squats, etc)

  • @scotty At the end of today, many of us doing this challenge will be at 1526 pushups and tomorrow's target is 172. Therefore tomorrow many of us will get past the halfway point (1625) of total pushups required for the challenge (3249). Perhaps, like last year, Ozbargain might choose to time their donations to coincide with the Northern Star dollar matching after 10am tomorrow, and gain a bit more bang for buck for the team true Ozbargain style! This would assume people who are up to date before tomorrow do at least 100 pushups before 10am tomorrow to qualify. This worked quite well last year. Thoughts Scotty?

Dollar matching tomorrow? Yeah sure I'll get my credit card ready. Get your arms pumping everyone!

3 weeks down. I used today to get last 100 of yesterday's done. I might have gone up half a cup size….
    .

  • Is there any more dollar matching day coming up? There are more ozbargainers crossing the half way mark so I'll either donate on the next dollar matching day (if there's any) or at the end of the campaign.

    • I scanned through their website and don't see details of any more dollar matching day. I hope they have one one the last day.

  • Aaaand, done
    .

  • I wish I could continue it for whole year…..this challenge was great motivation to push up every day…does anyone know how do we continue this..
