PSA - HSBC Debit Card Issue on Night of 09th May - Declined on POS but Amount Deducted from Account

I was in a restaurant last night and tried to paid bill on Tyro POS using the HSBC debit credit. The POS machine finished with a "Declined, contact issuer" message. Waited a few minutes and tried again, got the same "Declined, contact issuer" message. I paid using another card and get done with my order. I did collect the receipts with Declined message on it.

After the meal, I checked my HSBC app and to my surprise, it showed those two transactions pending. I thought it might revers overnight. I checked the app again in the morning and found that the two transactions were actually no more pending and money was taken away from account. Called their support and after half an hour wait and verification, the person tells me that "Yeah, we had an issue with debit cards yesterday where transactions were declined but money was taken away from account". She created the dispute on those two transactions on my behalf which can take up to 21 days. She also mentioned that the issue is now resolved.

I am sharing it for awareness of all HSBC debit card users. If your transaction was declined on the night of 9th May, check your transactions in the mobile app on net banking and make sure money was not taken from your account.

    Thanks for sharing, mine got declined last night as well. I've just checked the mobile app, and fortunately, there are no transactions for last night.
