The Samsung S90D/S90DD OLED is marginally better than the Samsung S90C OLED. The S90D is a bit brighter in HDR, so highlights in HDR content stand out a little bit more, and it has better color volume, so it can display very bright colors a bit better. The S90D also has slightly better processing, so there's less banding in colors, and it does a better job with smoothing out low-quality content.

Great deal. Wish they have a frame tv with oled.

if you dont mind a more reasonable sized 55" and last years model (a proposal that, yes, horrifies the technorati on multiple levels), the 55" S95C 4K OLED can be found for $2295 at good guys and $2299 on the standard Samsung site

Be wary the 77/83 inch are reported to not use QD-OLED but WOLED. 55 and 65 use QD

You will notice all mention of QD Oled isnt there when selection 77 or 83

    • Oh crap, good shout. For some reason I thought Samsung were doing QD-OLED panel for 77-inch for their 2024 model but that looks to be only for the S95D models and not the S90D model

Apparently for S90D in 65 & 55 inch, Samsung are using both their QD-OLED panels & LG's WOLED, so when you buy one you don't know what you're going to get…. It's being referred to as "The Panel Lottery"

    https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=…

Looking at Samsung website for their new D Series OLED''s, there is no mention of QD-OLED anywhere… Must be because of this mixed panel situation, they can't have "QD-OLED" in their marketing stuff I suppose cause if someone buys one thinking they will get QD-OLED tech but they get a WOLED one, they might want to return it.

I wonder if there is anything in the model number on the box which indicates that you are buying a QD-OLED or a WOLED? Personally, I would want to know if I'm spending $3k ~ $5k

Classic Samsung deception. That's why I normally steer clear of Samsung appliances and televisions (that and their customer support for when things go wrong are horrendous). Their flagship smartphones are great though

      • +1

Their flagship TV the Samsung s95d model is great though. It's got anti glare technology and works well in a very sunlit room.

        • It's got anti glare technology

ironically, that’s why it’s being criticised.

          • @AlexF: Yep, it’s also impossible to clean. There are many reports on Reddit where people can’t get a simple fingerprint mark off the screen and leaves a slight hue due to the ridiculous AR coating. I have an S95B and wouldn’t purchase one again. I also have an A80J and much prefer it despite getting a lower score on RTINGS (although it’s arbitrary anyway).

        • I saw it in store, the 95D. Understand the concept of the anti glare filter but I think it kinda defeats the purpose of an OLED. As I understand it, OLED's handle blacks so well because individual pixels can turn on & off, so when they are off, you get a pure black. If you see the 95D in store switched off like I did, the screen doesn't look inky black like my LG OLED's at home when turned off, it kinda looks a little bit greyish which would be because of anti glare filter thingy. So when the pixels turn off on that Samsung because of black in the content you're watching, you won't be seeing a pure black cause of the anti glare filter.

So that Samsung S95D screen reminds me of an old ad from the 90’s:
          https://youtu.be/JWSFJm_0B4Y?si=R2CsOM9sdtoYq6dD

I think I can continue to live with some reflection/glare on my LG OLED, rather than have an OLED that can't show a pure black. But I also barely ever watch TV in daytime, it's almost always at night. Suppose it depends on everyone's viewing habits……. YMMV

          • @Coolhandlucas: This is a good take on this TV. I was lucky to preview the Samsung S90C, S95C and D models side by side during setup at a local brick and mortar store and though the sales rep, who is a TV enthusiast himself, was impressed by the spec sheet and overall improvements to the D model I preferred the older C TV.

What caught my eye was the 2023 C range was brighter to my eyes and in a very subtle way clearer without the newer matte coatings. My preference is for best of the best reflection handling and brightness - I have a QN90B and D - and the older Samsung OLEDs just 'popped'. This was in a low reflection environment so the results may have been different if it was in a bright sunset facing room.

In some ways it reminded me in reverse of the LG C2 to C3 upgrade. The C2 is a fine, if not best in class/value, for it's release but when the C3 came out the added brightness and subtle detail in specific situations made for more pop in the visuals.

So do recommend for any TV buyers out there to check it in store first but you can't go wrong with either and if I had a choice between C and D I would go for the D 2024 range and between LG and Samsung they are both great.

Would that be because of the overwhelming amount of environment lighting in the store?

            • @AlexF: Yes I cant believe so many people are against this tech, its great for those wanting OLED in a living area that is exposed to overhead lights or sunlight during some watching. At night if you turn everything off you will get full advantage of OLED whilst still getting much better day performance than other OLEDs as reflections and glare is a major eye strain

              • @Savvy shopper1111: Unlike Apple and its “nano-texture display glass” they didn’t offer it as an option on S95D - let customers choose! They also force customers to play panel roulette for S90D. Samsung’s got arrogant management and that will be their undoing in 2024.

This or (77 inch LG OLED evo C4 4K Smart TV 2024) which you can get with your VIP account for $4,589.23

    • I would personally go with the Samsung if you're considering the C4. Both using LGs WOLED screen

    I own 2 LGs and 1 Samsung.

My issue with the Samsung, is QD-OLED I don't think really, for me, is that much better than WOLED, I just don't see it, I'm not doing exact side by side comparisons, I just use my TVs and I don't see it.

The Samsung physically is really really annoying to setup, just stupidly thin at least the S95B is, just unnecessary.

HDR on LG seems to have more content, HDR10+ vs Dolby Vision, I think DV has won.

Lastly the OS when switching inputs, just not good on Samsung. LG advertise things like '3 months free Apple TV+' it does other annoying things, but Samsung is worse.

Even with all of that - 77" for less than $4k, is a great deal, it's still an OLED, and once the content is playing, unless you're super into HDR video, great value imo.

Me too, I don’t see it either. WOLED looks perfectly fine the way it is. After Samsung nerfed the S95B with the last firmware update, I couldn’t recommend them to anyone.

    • Even with all of that - 77" for less than $4k, is a great deal, it's still an OLED

As SONY proved, image processing is pivotal. Has Samsung optimised their processing for WOLED?

      • Samsung aren't selling WOLED, they're selling QD-OLED. There really isn't much in Image processing anymore.

        • Samsung aren't selling WOLED, they're selling QD-OLED.

          Literally,… the next post.

      • Samsung are using their processor which was made for their NEO QLED, in their OLED's from what I can see on their website. So not sure how well a processor designed for backlit LED will work for a completely different tech in QD-OLED? And then the same processor can also drive W-OLED to derive the best possible picture? Must be some amazing AI going on there….

Hey guys seems all S90D panels in Australia are WOLED DO NOT BUY if you want QD-OLED variants.

    Available in s90D 55" & 65" but not 77" & 83"

Easiest way is to check model numbers

QD-OLED will be WXXY as last four digits of model number

WOLED will be EXXY as last four digits of model number

    Hope this helps

  • Only 55" & 65" S90D panels are QD-OLED
