    Here we go again

Bad practice in showing in stock but after you order you will receive an email saying it's in backorder, etc - FYI

Just waiting for a sale for these that's NOT from DD

this or air tag? i have both ios and andriod

    • +4

      AirTag.
Coming from a sad Android only user.

I did a ton of research and coverage for AirTag tracking is much better globally so better for travelling as well.

Google did not release their tracking network fully. And when they do participation will be opt in so I am expecting bad adoption. While on Apple sheep do not get a choice as usual and every device is sn active tracker.

      • +5

Google making it opt in is destined for failure. As is tradition.

      • +12

If you could please share the research I think some of us would appreciate the reading.

My first hand experience in Australia and Japan the SmartTag fairs better than an Airtag. Maybe important note for some I think Airtag doesn't show location history only current location.

Any tag is better than no tag at all, I think for most people the deciding factor will be which mobile phone is their daily driver. You'd by more likely to buy a tag for your mobile rather than a mobile for your tag.

        • +2

I second this. The extra smarts make it useful when it isn't lost, and the design makes it easier to attach to keys, bags, etc.

Any tag is better than no tag at all

I have no tag. Life still seems to be going ok…

      • What communication protocol is used (in both cases)?

    • I have used both, and airtag is better, smarttag required firmware and app updates all the time.

So in your view, the absence of software updates makes something better?

          • @1st-Amendment: Perhaps what I should have said is, "What is it about the AirTag that makes it better, in your opinion?"

              Much better.
I'm not OP but where Apple has an advantage is that they control the entire ecosystem so everything works by default. Samsung have a disjointed ecosystem with many variables and dependencies outside of their control eg Google. So a change in either Android or Samsung can break things, hence the need for more updates, and sometimes no update for months, things just remain broken.
I don't own Apple devices personally, I find the UI a bit too simplistic, but the single ecosystem has many advantages one of which is that stuff just works better and requires less maintenance.
Another consideration is that Apple have far more devices out there that are all on by default so tracking in theory should be far more reliable.

              • @1st-Amendment: I'm on the fence. I'm a user of both due to work. I think claims about Apple's superior ecosystem, where once irrefutable, don't hold up to the same level of scrutiny for the past few major generations of software. Personally, I think bugs are surpringly common, and I find their closed ecosystem model very frustrating as someone who is brand agnostic. The respective platforms are more similar than they are different. I do agree that Apples market share lead, especially in Australia, is a significant advantage to them. However, I think the SmartTag2 is a more useful product in everyday circumstances. Whether or not it comes through for me when I have something lost or stolen, only time will tell.

    • none if you want universal tracker for any mobile (Tile is the leader, but you can get other better value).
Smart Tag2 if you are on Samsung https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-galaxy-smarttag-2-r…
AirTag if you are locked to the iPay system ;)

well I have six tiles and my wife 4 air tags the air tags are superior My tile woke me the other night to say something i was looking for was spotted 1km away foating in the creek. eventually found it next door

Oh wow, been waiting for a good deal, this is amazing price.

  • I just ended up getting these from Amazon at a slight discount, paying $130.75. I couldn't be bothered waiting for a better deal… and I get to use them before a Samsung Smart Tag3 comes out.

  • +2

    Usually $101 at tgg commercial

  • Will these work with the Find My Device network?

    • +1

No, this is exactly why I didn't buy it and decided to wait for Chipolo or Pebblebee releasing this month.

      • Wow it's been almost a year since the Chipolo was available for pre-order.

        • they were waiting for Google.
Google had a long discussion with Apple to set the standards.
Now the new Android platform is released, everything is ready.

      • But they are not cheap tho. Expected cheaper tags from an android user :(

        • Never buy at RRP. lol

        • Gift20 seems to take 20% off chipolo instead of the so called 10% off .

  • +3

I've bought 4, and they constantly make nosies randomly. Sometimes it's just on the bench and it just beeps. This caused the battery to go flat after 2 months. Not happy with them!!!

    • Thanks. Not buying them then. Someone already shared they are not as good as Airtag

    • Yes, I have the same problem. I put one on the dog collar and she goes nuts.
They are not supposed to make a noise.
You can permanently disable the speaker this way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIfUHOo93sk

    • Mine also beep very occasionally, still running on the same batteries since first released.

      • Battery is replaceable? If not last for how long?

        • Yes replaceable battery, uses flat battery CR2032.

    • +1

Update the firmware. I haven't had this problem.

    • +3

No such problem with my 4 smartag2

  • +2

These are really good if U have a Samsung phone . I have 6 off these even use it as basic level tracker on my car . Using it in airports and overseas I find better luck with these compared to my wife who uses airtags

  • I have 4 and used them all for my lastest overseas, 2 were for luggages and other 2 were for my wife and my son.

It is useful for collecting luggages at the airport, all you need is to turn on notification and wait until it notifies you once your luggages are found, and also prevent to pick up someone's luggages.

    • +6

2 were for luggages and other 2 were for my wife and my son.

The opposite i dont mind i lost my wife. Its due for an upgrade

  • Does anyone know how the remote tracking of these compares to Tile? I would have assumed there'd be more Samsung phone owners to ping than Tile owners, but most reviews say otherwise.

  • +1

Anyone know if this can open beer bottles?

  • Just joined eBay Plus for a month just for this deal, and have to set up a reminder to cancel it before they charge me again (not sure if they do it automatically every month, or if they give you a heads up). Can't take the risk.

    • +1

You can cancel it now and it’s still good for the 30 days. Just won’t re-bill you.

      • That's great. Thanks for the tip.

  • Thanks OP.
Gonna wire these up to my Apple ones and make a flux capacitor.
