Seeking Advice on Best Value Credit Card Reward Programs

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to maximise my spending and get the best value for money from a credit card reward program. I'm interested in different categories such as travel, retail, and gift card discounts. Also, the overall dollar per point value is essential for me to assess the worth of each program.

Can you share your experiences with different reward programs and provide recommendations? Specifically, I'm looking for:

Travel Rewards: Which cards offer the best value for flights, hotels, car rentals, or travel-related perks? I'm open to both domestic and international travel benefits.

Retail Rewards: Which cards provide the highest rewards for everyday spending like groceries, dining, and shopping?

Gift Card Discounts: Do any cards offer good rewards or discounts when redeeming points for gift cards to popular retailers?

Overall Dollar per Point Value: In your experience, which programs offer the best return on spending? How do you measure the value of points when redeeming them?

I would appreciate any recommendations or insights you can provide.

      google dont do credit cards

  • Value is somewhat subjective. First study the common currencies: QFF, Velocity, Flybuys, ANZ/NAB/Westpac/CommBank/Amex Membership/Citi/HSBC/Bankwest/St George Amplify rewards… among others.

My experiences are that trying to maximise points per $ is a complete waste of time unless you're spending ten's of thousands of dollars every month, and even then many CC's have earning caps.

You're much better off just chasing credit card sign up promotions. You can easily get about 300,000+ points per year just doing sign up bonuses. I might earn 10,000-15,000 points for my spend for that, so you can see the earning potential is trivial compared to the sign up bonuses.

Rinse and repeat every year. So far this year I've earned 200,000 Virgin Velocity points and next bonus is about 60,000 Qantas points.
