  • Hi, noob here.

Can someone please give me an explanation for PoE? Like what specific set up would I be working with to require the PoE+ switch?

If you have devices that can receive power over Ethernet. VoIP phones, security cameras and things like that

    • mainly low powered devices. Wifi access points, security cameras are the two major ones I've got it setup for. One cable does power and data to my security cameras, ditto for the wifi access points.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that allows devices, such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, to receive power and data over a single Ethernet cable. PoE eliminates the need for separate power cables, simplifying installation and reducing costs.

PoE devices typically fall into two categories:

      1. PoE devices: These devices can receive power directly from a PoE-enabled switch or injector.

      2. PoE-enabled switches or injectors: These network devices supply power and data to PoE-compatible devices through Ethernet cables.

Now, regarding your question about PoE+ switches: PoE+ (also known as PoE Plus or IEEE 802.3at) is an extension of the original PoE standard (IEEE 802.3af). PoE+ provides higher power levels, up to 30 watts per port, compared to the 15.4 watts provided by standard PoE.

You would require a PoE+ switch in scenarios where your devices require more power than what standard PoE can provide. Devices such as high-powered IP cameras, pan-tilt-zoom cameras, or access points with advanced features like multiple radios or high-gain antennas might require PoE+ for sufficient power delivery. So, if your setup includes such devices, opting for a PoE+ switch would be necessary to ensure they receive adequate power.

    • PoE would be compatible with most APs, IP Phones, IP cameras, etc. Likely most PoE devices you'd see IRL.
PoE+ for bigger APs (such as UniFi U6LR and up) as they're more power hungry, or if you're using PoE passthrough switch (i.e. using higher powered PoE+ to power a PoE switch that also powers lower-powered PoE devices - it's quite convenient!).
PoE++ for really power hungry devices - such as mini PCs, door controller (UniFi Access box), big UniFi PTZ camera, etc.

  • 5 Port no longer available, bugger!

    • That model is often on sale.

  • 8 port POE was $65 until a few days ago. Pretty sure it was gigabit model.

    • You should expect 8x 2.5GbE w/ PoE+ switches for at least $100 at the moment. But time will tell.

  • Bought one works perfectly

  • Thanks OP, I've been sniffing around for a PoE option and this is not much more than what I've found on Marketplace

  • Thank you OP. Too cheap to pass up. I've been needing one for a while. :)

  • I picked Up the 8 port non POE for my needs. With the Amazon locker it was available next day. Pretty smooth barcode scan and pickup solution and 2 dollars cheaper delivery.👍
