Same thing as this one: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285659059414 if Rarewaves is charging $65 then $50 should be a bargain right?
I can't do comparison shopping right now because of vpn issues. I'm "in" Miami and the US price lines up with, or exceeds 50AUD.

Camel-watchers can go away because I haven't seen any Portishead LPs drop below $50 for a while.

Dummy is also not bad @ $52

Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it hasn't. Camels reckon it was $40 a few weeks ago.

Edit: This is standard price at JB Hifi. They were probably matching the 20% vinyl JB had a little while back.

Ah yes here we go; the camels do show it dropping to $40 two times between Dec 2023 and Jan 2024 for short amounts of time. It also dropped to $40 between April and May this year for a tiny amount of time.

Do you do this for every post on OzB? Got find this for cheaper and I'll amend the post and give credit to you.

  • Got it. Thanks

  • how's Miami?

    • +1

Awesome. Going to the F1 race weekend tomorrow

      • going to Kith or something to look at sneakers?

        • +1

          umm sure, why not

Camel-watchers can go away because I haven't seen any Portishead LPs drop below $50 for a while.

Huh? Does that just translate to "I reject the fact that camels shows this was cheaper recently" ?

    • No, because the camels often have huge gaps of no info, and people just quote the atl and yell "no bargain"! Or misinterpret the graph. I love the camels, but they're not the bastion of price discovery and comparison.

  • love this record

Dummy on vinyl is an amazing record to test audio systems. One of the best sounding records in my collection.

    • I don't have any way to play vinyl but it'd be one of the first albums I'd buy if I go down that track.

    • It's very good, self-titled is very good too.

    • +1

I've got that one on vinyl, sounds great. Paid $18 delivered from Amazon, about 3 years ago.

I'm still struggling a lot with the concept that a re-issued vinyl album at $50 be considered to be a "bargain". Lol

      • +1

Yeah, I usually wait for $30 or under to buy unless its going to sell out

      • I got this one (not sure if it was the first pressing), and Roseland NYC for under $30. I got Dummy for $14 from amazon in 2018.

There's no need to struggle with the concept, it's quite simple, vinyl prices are increasing, that's it, and I'm not gonna compare pricing from 6 years ago. $52 for Dummy, right now in May 2024, is not a bad price like I said in the post.

        • +1

I paid $18.90 just under 4 years ago.

          If $18 was a "bargain" in 2020 I just don't agree that $52 is a bargain in 2024. That's roughly a 30% increase per annum!!

But I do accept that it's all about supply and demand. The materials/production costs have probably gone up by 30or 50% in that time.. But the increase is mostly margin - the record labels and vendors know that people are prepared to pay that price for vinyl!!!

          • @clandestino: Every new release is $60-$80, unless you preorder for under $30 which is quite rare, I've only seen that happen with 2 artists.

I read somewhere that all vinyl sales in 2020 (i can't remember the year) were 15% Taylor Swift.

So $60+ is the new normal, even when I look for old records they're all $60. I sometimes get lucky and get one for under $40.

M.I.A. - Arular recently dropped to about $40 but I couldn't post because <10 left with no back orders.

    • I've been tossing up whether or not to buy dummy for a while. Love the album. I recently decided to go with the 25th anniversary live in NYC instead. Might still get dummy one day.

  • Are you going to Walmart to look at watches? I've heard you can find some good bargains there.

    • I went to a few Walmarts in Canada but didn't see any watches.

      • Maybe USA stores are better than Canada.

        • Ok, I'n not sure if you and @beltdrive are taking the piss or whatever, but my laptop vpn is connected to Miami, and my phone is connected to Boston

Always thought these guys were overrated. It bothers me that I don't see the appeal.

    • That's fine, different people like different stuff. Thanks for being civil.

      • +1

Of course. Keen to give them another listen after a decade or so.

I've always found the context of Portishead to be after having met the quintessential indie girl, then listening to this at her place at 2:00am with red wine.

        • +2

Mine is the manic-pixie-dream-girl, and listening to this at her dump of an apartment and drinking craft beer (she can't afford whisky unfortunately)

      • +1

And of course - thanks @rosebank for the post. Always like your posts regarding a good deal on vinyl.

    • +1

Maybe listen to "Live in Roseland NYC" which covers the first two albums but with a live orchestra - if that doesn't get you over the line nothing will.

  • +1

Great album… But I wouldn't pay $50 for it, given that I've got it on another format already.

If it was $25 or $30, I'd be tempted.

  • @rosebank

What are your thoughts on 'Blood Records' and their output?

    • +1

It's pretty cool. I would've bought the Dua Lipa one, but it's sold out already with 5000 pressed.

I already have a lot of vinyl and don't chase limited releases. Same with sneakers, and watches.

I can see myself dropping 1k per order at blood records, but I'd much rather use that money to buy whisky.

  • +1

In case people weren't aware, there's a reissue for Roseland NYC live. The reissue includes a more complete live performance

    • I saw that. I have the original, but will probably buy the re-issue
