Wife Going on Maternity Leave - Accomodation Arrangement

Hi all, just wanting to get some thoughts from the ozBargain community regarding this situation that we’re in.

My wife is pregnant and we’re having a baby due in a few months time. The job that my wife does involves living on site of which the accommodation is provided by her employer as part of her contract. Her plan is to continue to work up until about a month before her expected due date and then she will start using her annual leave and whatever maternity leave she is entitled to from the government and her company.

Now the question we have is: Is the employer required to continue to provide the accomodation while she’s on leave? We couldn’t find anything regarding this in her employment contract or on Fairwork. Her employer has been in the know that she is pregnant for quite sometime now and they haven’t mentioned anything about it yet.

    Do they pay for her accommodation when she goes on holidays/leave? If not, why would they pay for it when she's on maternity leave?

    You can expect a negative response as I expect postnatal care won't be readily accessible at the remote area housing.

    is she a live in carer ? and the accommodation would be required by her replacement?

    Are you expecting the employer to provide her with housing on her leave?

    The employer provides cooked meals on site, do you expect the employer to provide a qualified chef in your home kitchen?

    Why not make arrangements for your wife to live with you while she is on maternity leave? Jeebus.

    First of all congratulations on the impending birth of your child. Hope it all goes well.

    I would very much doubt they are obligated to provide accomodation for someone on maternity leave but they might. Talk to the union reps. If she isn’t a member she should join. I assume she is looking at her return to work timetable. If this is likely to be reasonably soon she might dangle it in front of them to keep her accomodation. Only the company can give a definitive answer. Honestly there is too little information to go on here.
