Extra Large Raw Tiger Prawns $21/kg (Was $29/kg) @ Woolworths

740

This deal looks to be back again. I bought some the other day and threw them on bbq, turned out very good.

The listing doesn't say "thawed", so my guess is these are freshly caught. Not sure about that though!

They usually go for $29 per kilo.

      Why not?

  • At Christmas I bought some prawns, they looked pink-ish so I served them to guests because they looked cooked. They weren't.

      "These are raw!"
"Uhhhhh yeahh, ummm I served prawn sashimi. Kanpai!"

You dont taste test your food before serving to guests? What if they were unfresh or tasted funky?

      • then they'll tell you

      • Funkytown?

        • Gotta make a move to a toilet that’s right for me

    • hahaha

    • Did your guests include your ex parents in law?

      • No lol. But my sister complained.

Unless you live in a city/town with a fishing harbour it is highly unlikely your supermarket prawns are freshly caught. They are usually snap frozen at sea and then thawed for sale. I’d prefer snap frozen to freshly caught and stored cool for multiple days.

If you want fresh, ask if you can buy the frozen pack instead of the thawed prawns on display. Then defrost just before cooking yourself (salted water works well to speed up the process)

Choose Australian whole prawns. Avoid international prawns at all costs- usually farm grown with who knows what fed to them.

My professor was heavily involved in the fisheries and to Woolworths. He'd call them "frozen, thawed for your convenience". So you're absolutely correct.

    • +2

or they try to sell you them still frozen & you are paying for the frozen weight which is a lot more than when defrosted

    • +1

Woolies won't sell you frozen prawns (only thawed) from the deli but there are now 1kg packs (cooked & green; Tassal, Austral Fisheries Karumba, Crystal Bay) in the freezer section.

      • +2

It depends who you ask. I bought a whole box frozen a few months ago. They were loose-ish, and did not give off much water when thawed.

        • +3

I used to buy them all the time frozen from the deli, can’t store the whole 5kg in my freezer. A team member advised they’re not allowed to sell them frozen any more, something to do with customers complaining about paying for ice.

          • @sumyungguy: It may depend on the type. I bought banana prawns and there was no ice.

      • Hmmm bought these a few times and thought they were good…. Until I saw that there was preservatives in the ingredients list.

        • I gather they may add sodium metabisulphite to prevent black spot

  • Tiger prawns are now mostly farmed in Australia in Queensland and quite rarely wild caught

    • +1

Mostly wild caught in WA. Exmouth tiger prawns 🍤 as big as your hand.

  • Wasnt on special at woolies maroochydore when i went half an hour ago.

Specifies “WILDCAUGHT” on the webpage. They sound delicious thrown on the BBQ. I’m gonna get some, thanks OP.

ok just to shed some light. majority of prawns are snap frozen when caught on the boat . when back to shore they are packed in frozen blocks. most prawns you see at the markets and fish shops are frozen blocks that are then thawed out by either running water or left out to defrost. prawns are not all year round. Just FYI. You may be getting prawns that have been caught 5-8 months ago. cheers.

  • bought raw prawns from coles twice n had a heavy ammonia smell. did anyone else have this issue? returned the prawn n got a refund though.

    • More than 10 times at Colesworth over the pass 20 years. I have given up.

Most of the tiger prawns these days are farmed.
I went to one north of Townsville once. I dont eat them any more.

    • +2

      Why not?

      • cos its farmed

        • +1

So everyone going to stop eating vegetables too?

      • He believes that prawns should only be eaten straight outta the ocean

        • Well, yes thats how I usually get them. Not in rivers if I can, ocean only same with fish.

      • Sorry been away. The stuff they feed them isnt always what they are allowed too.
Sure there not feeding them human effluent like asia do but no thanks.

  • Just remember, "shrinks are bugs". I have even seen pictures of people with that tattoed on them. We, actually, almost all mobile sea life are animals, but apparently prawns and lobsters have a lot of genetic similarity with insects (I didn't study zoology).

    • +1

      You mean shrimps?

      (I didn't study zoology)

      You don't say…

Why did I see the pic as a millennium falcon on first glance?

    • +2

Maybe you need star wars help, but I fully went back to have a look and understand where you coming from bro. May the 4th be with you

  • Besides a BBQ how else can you cook these? Do people grill them or roast them in the oven?

    • +2

Air fryer is possible. I have seen recipes on internet. I prefer them unshelled though

      • +3

Keep the shell on, it locks the moisture keep it juicy while you BBQ.

  • Weird. My local Woolworth Metro (Middle Camberwell, VIC) had them for $28 but with 30% discount to make it $19.60 per KG.
I got about 800gm to make a bisque tomorrow night.

  • I'm a migrant I used to live where various live prawns are abundant. I know what living fresh prawns smell like.

6 of 10 times I buy prawns from Colesworth smells like ammonia or bleach or whatever chemical they add to preserve the prawns. Doesn't matter king, tiger or banana prawns. I also tried several suburbs but its the same I gave up. I haven't try those seafood shops yet unfortunately I'm not so rich.

Maybe one day if I really want prawns I will go get live ones. I don't understand why the prawns at the sushi stores don't smell.

  • How do these puppies go raw? The kids love raw prawns.

  • banana for scale pls

  • looks back to RRP
