Anyone know if these work at ATO?

    • +10

You cannot use these gift cards to make payments online at the ATO, because these gift cards do not support online transactions.

You can only use this gift card in-person at merchants that choose to accept physical prepaid eftpos gift cards as a payment method.

      • -2

We can pay to ato from auspost. Can we pay using this GC?

        • No idea. I was never given a payment slip for my ATO debts in the past, so I was never able to test this out.

        • +5

The Auspost EFTPOS machine not accept this type card.

          • @aoliren: is this new?

            • @dbui8743: No since middle of last year. (If my memory is not wrong.)

I used be use the prepaid EFTPOS card to pay my Amex at auspost.

Edit: but what I used was from Blackhawk, this one is from TCN, not sure would be same or not.

              • -1

@aoliren: Yeah it will all depend on the BIN number and whether it has already been blacklisted by all the usual suspects

                • -2

@trotsky: I don't think Auspost blacklist any cards on their sides. Some card issuers choose to impost various restriction on using these cards at Auspost from time to time.

                  • @truetypezk: An Auspost staff once told me they blocked all Gift card. When I swiped it was declined.
Can't remember which gift card I was using though.

                    • -1

@sneijder: That's just BS. Some cards block Auspost as a merchant but Auspost does not block cards like Coles/Woolies do based on BINs. Make sure you are not doing it as a cash-out but as a purchase.

                      • +1

@truetypezk: I used EFTPOS gc to pay gas bill at AusPost (PO, not LPO) yesterday, no problem it.

              • @aoliren: Ultimate GC - managing and running by Blackhawk.

TCN - managing and running by Vii Pty Ltd.

  • Grate news. Can I use my coles Mastercards to pay for these cards ?

    • No.

      • what about the vanilla cards can I use these to pay ? Are you sure I used it today to buy a apple gift card

    • Yes Coles MasterCard credit card haha

  • +1

Can you buy gift cards with these at Coles/woolies?

    • No

  • -2

    yes

  • I used today coles vanilla card too buy an apple gift card. Are you sure

    • It depends on where you bought the Apple GC. If you're suggesting you bought an Apple GC from Coles using a Coles Mastercard GC, you would be the only person that has managed to do that in the last few years

      • I brought it from Woolworths the apple gift card not coles

    • We need wookie guy to answer these

      • +8

I have not tested this myself yet, but I am 99.9% sure you cannot purchase the TCN eftpos gift cards in this deal at Woolworths using Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards or Vanilla Visa gift cards.

Some gift cards sold at Woolworths have more restrictions on the payment cards that you can use to pay for them. In other words, Woolworths does not apply the same restrictions on payment methods across all the gift cards sold in their stores. Some examples:

        • Someone told me today they tried to purchase a TCN eftpos gift card using a ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card, but got the Items Not Allowed error. (This indicates Woolworths has increased restrictions on the payment cards you can use to purchase a TCN eftpos gift card.)

        • @dealsgrabber said back in September 2023 they tried to purchase a Perfect eftpos gift cards using a Coles Mastercard gift card and Vanilla Visa gift card, but got the Items Not Allowed error.

        • When I purchased an Activ Visa gift card last month, I tried to use a Vanilla Visa gift card as a payment method, but got the Items Not Allowed error.

        • On the other hand, if you purchase an Apple gift card, you can use a Vanilla Visa gift card to pay for it, because Woolworths is not as strict on the payment cards you can use to pay for Apple gift cards (or Ultimate gift cards, TCN HIM/HER/HOME/etc gift cards, Uber gift cards, etc).

There is no harm in trying though. The worst that would probably happen is that a staff member will give you a lecture on how you cannot use gift cards to purchase gift cards.

        • +1

I can't answer for the TCN gift cards, but just yesterday I used Coles Mastercard's bought on discount to buy some Airbnb cards at Woolworths (sadly couldn't wait for a proper discount on them). I used a self service checkout and the only painful thing was the staff authorisation kicking in after 1 card is scanned.

          • @quick-dry: To be honest, I purchased one TCN HIM gc from Woolworths (w/ 20x bonus points) with using my physical Coles Mastercard GC 3 weeks ago. No issue.

        • +4

          verified today as same:

SB SM card - Items Not Allowed
Vanilla / Coles Mastercard - Items Not Allowed

a staff member will give you a lecture on how you cannot use gift cards to purchase gift cards - Yes :)

  • Will the points double if you are everyday rewards extra member

    • +1

No, bonus points never double, and GCs don't earn normal points.

Has anyone tried to pay rego at auspost?

  • -1

wow, when did the purchase fee come in for these cards?….right, they now have straight eftpos cards? Wonder if these are as easy to hack and drain as some of the others?

    • wow, when did the purchase fee come in for these cards?….right, they now have straight eftpos cards?

Woolworths started selling TCN eftpos gift cards last month. They replaced Perfect eftpos gift cards (which Woolworths had been selling for a number of years to that point). Woolworths is also still selling Westfield eftpos gift cards. Open-loop eftpos gift cards being sold at Woolworths is nothing new.

Wonder if these are as easy to hack and drain as some of the others?

      No.

These gift cards can only be redeemed through card-present transactions, which means you need to present (i.e. swipe) the physical gift card on the EFTPOS terminal to redeem it. “Hacking and draining” a prepaid gift card would usually involve obtaining (or guessing) the card details and using it for a card-not-present transaction (e.g. online transaction, MOTO transaction), which is a type of transaction not supported on these gift cards.

Having said that, there was a mysterious case I helped one OzBargainer with where they bought one of the old Perfect eftpos gift cards handled by Indue from Woolworths, loaded $500 onto it, and then there was a random charge for $490 at a jeweller a few weeks later in a different city (and the jeweller’s EFTPOS records showed the card used was physically swiped). The OzBargainer insisted they never lost their gift card or had someone access it without them knowing, which meant to me the issue was either:

      • An issue with Blackhawk Network in their back-end meant the charge was allocated to the wrong gift card, or

      • Someone stole the gift card from Woolworths, duplicated the information on the gift card’s magstripe, noted the PIN (because the PIN was only concealed by a weak security sticker) and then returned the gift card to Woolworths for someone else to buy.

    • -1

I have been buying eftpos cards for 20+ years and they have always had a purchase fee. Unless you brought them from woolworths metro where they waived the purchase fee and you got a free coffee. Is that what you mean?

      • no, just didn't know TCN had eftpos cards now to spend anywhere

      • +1
        • that one was another promo and no points either

you would only buy that promo if you had to reach credit card spending limit

      • woah woah woah don't leak that metro secret

  • -2

I very foolishly bought a Mastercard through AusPost which is complete junk. No one will take the thing (AVOID IT!)
Could I buy these cards with that? I just happened to load $1k exactly on the card.

  • @WookieMonster Reading above, we can't use Coles MasterCard gift card or ShopBack's Supermarket card to buy this TCN gift card.

Can this TCN card be used to buy Ultimate Everyone or Uber in Coles or Woolworths?

This TCN card has to be swiped so cannot be used online or added to PayPal. May not suit me

    • +1

Can this TCN card be used to buy Ultimate Everyone or Uber in Coles or Woolworths?

That is my expectation, as long as staff do not stop you.

      • +1

        Thanks

      • the question is why would they bother just for a small discount

      • Do you know if I can use this TCN EFTPOS to buy the SHOP 20x tomorrow at Woolies?

  • -1

Swiping is such a pain. Can't decide if a 3.4% discount is worth the major inconvenience.

  • Hey guys, do you know if it is possible to buy variable gift card using self-checkout and multiple split transactions? Extra 2% cashback with HSBC is very tempting.

    • +2

Yes, split payments are possible at self-checkouts.

    • yes but if you split too many times HSBC will blocked your card

      which has occurred

      • Wow! Didn't know that. How many transactions is too many?

        • well mine was a bit extreme I did like 9x $99 transactions and then on the 10th one it got blocked which I paid with another card

you kind of stand there looking silly while the staff standing there is like wtf this guy doing so long

          • @Poor Ass: You can use a different format of the HSBC card to get around this. E.g. tap card, tap Google Pay on phone, tap Google Pay on watch. Phone and watch use a different virtual card number to each other on Google Pay. Not sure about Apple.

            • +1

@aaron3: nah man it's all the same card just different way to pay so it'll get flagged if ya doing it like same amount x times in a row

i guess it should be blocked if any of those items are stolen and someone is using it

              • @Poor Ass: Haha we actually talked about this before. The above is just my takeaway from my experience in that deal.

                • @aaron3: Made 6 splits different amounts. All went well.
                  Paid with Google Wallet.

                • @aaron3: Aren't we just old and going around in circles

  • I don't have this offer on my Rewards app and cannot boost it. Does it require boosting before buying the gift cards?

    • +2

      No.

This is a deal taken from the weekly catalogue, and is open to any Everyday Rewards members. If you look at the terms and conditions of this offer, there is no mention of boosting or activation required. (If this was a requirement, the terms and conditions would have said so.)

I have never seen a deal for gift cards at Woolworths (or BIG W) where you had to activate a booster on your Everyday Rewards account beforehand. There was a booster for Apple gift cards as part of the last catalogue cycle, but the terms and conditions of the booster made it very clear you did not actually need to boost it before making a purchase.

How it works: You do not need to boost this offer. To collect 20x points on Apple Gift Cards, purchase any Qualifying Gift Cards in-store and scan your Everyday Rewards Card before completing your transaction.

Thank you so much for this, very helpful!

The one transaction per day limit on the variable cards doesn't appear to be enforced.

    • Nice!! My local won't process anything over $1k, so I had to get 1x $500, and 1x $480.

    • wow your game… wouldn't you be cut if they didn't give you points on the second one

      • -1

If you don't see the pts immediately before payment on the 2nd transaction, you can just choose not to proceed. Nothing to lose there.

        • -1

Just lose face in front of the attendant

          • -1

@Poor Ass: Yeah my face is worthless, so nothing to worry about :)

  • has anyone used these at Aus Post to pay bills?

    • +2

I did that today. Worked for me.

  • I mistakenly bought the perfect eftpos gift card and did not get points, now need to contact customer service.

    • +4

Rule of thumb: No bonus pts on the screen, No payment.

Stick to it as it also prevents you from not scanning EDR.

      • -1

or you could play the wait 14 business days annoying game

      • They gave me 7000 points. At lea it covered my petrol and cards cost.

    • Has anyone tried to use Tcn Eftpos card bought at WWS to purchase good food card?

  • +1

only saw the colorful Eftpos Merindah-Gunya, is it same as plain card?

    • +1

Same as in it still gives you 10x points

  • Hi bought three $500 cards today . 2 in one transaction and 1 in seperate transaction. Didn’t received points for 3rd one. Do i contact them ? Was there limit of 2 cards per day. I read it

    • Not the clearest terms I have seen, but looks like a limit of 2 per day for the variable load cards:

“For Eftpos $20-$500 and Eftpos Merindah-Gunya Variable $20-$500 cards where you choose the amount to load, a limit of 2 cards per day per Rewards Member in a single transaction.”

      • +1

Yes that was the case. I told them terms are not clear. They manually added points for 3rd card.

        • I fail to understand which part of that terms isn't clear. I thought it is crystal clear that you can get max 2 cards/day and it has to be done in a single transaction, which seems not enforced though.

    • +1

That's unfortunately - For the 3rd card that you didn't get the EDR points, you can try and call EDR call centre and explain the situation.

  • Does anyone know if these would work to buy other TCN cards from BigW later this week?
