    Meh!

  • i mean it's good if you have one pass, just buy it to earn 5x points

    • +2

OnePass bonus flybuys point feature doesn't apply to Coles purchase.

  • +3

    Lol what's the point 😂

    • Exactly. Can't even use these to sign up to OnlyFans.

    • I seem to have a fuzzy recollection that some low income workers employed by NFPs can salary sacrifice groceries.

      • It's for PBI which was the salary sacrifice cap that employees can do

There are some points to this deal, but I will acknowledge it has limited appeal.

      For example:

      • If you have an American Express (AMEX) card, you can use it to purchase this gift card and then use the gift card in-person at merchants who do not accept AMEX or to avoid a surcharge merchants charge for accepting AMEX. For example, ALDI does not accept AMEX, but ALDI accepts eftpos cards (and do not levy their surcharge against payments routed through the eftpos network). You should still earn points on your AMEX card for purchasing this gift card, and if you have an AMEX that gives you bonus points for spend at a supermarket, purchasing this gift card should qualify for bonus points too!

      • If you have a Visa/Mastercard card (especially a platinum/premium Visa/Mastercard credit card), you can use it to purchase in-person at merchants to reduce or avoid a surcharge that you may have to pay for using Visa/Mastercard at a merchant. You should still earn points on your Visa/Mastercard card for purchasing this gift card. Again, ALDI is a good example.

      • Some people will be interested in converting their prepaid gift cards (e.g. Activ Visa gift card, Vanilla Visa gift card, Coles Mastercard gift card) into something that is much harder to “hack”. Having said that, Coles is known to code in restrictions in their checkouts to stop customers from using some prepaid gift cards to purchase some gift cards, plus some Coles staff will stop you if they see you are using a prepaid gift card as a payment method. Additionally, Blackhawk Network - the owner of a number of prepaid gift card schemes - enforces spending restrictions on their prepaid gift cards at merchants categorised as a supermarket.

      • Purchasing these gift cards can help you reach any credit card spend requirements to earn a sign-up bonus, as long as spend at supermarkets is not specifically listed as an exclusion (and I cannot think of an example where this is the case).

      • Shockingly, some people will purchase these gift cards as a gift for someone else and will pay the purchase fee (either knowingly or unknowingly). This deal means you can gift a gift card to someone and not worry about paying for the purchase fee.

There are a few downsides though:

      • TCN eftpos gift cards can only be used in-person at a merchant, and you need to swipe the physical gift card in this deal to redeem it. There is no way (at least known to me) where you can convert a physical TCN eftpos gift card from this deal into a digital TCN eftpos gift card.

      • Merchants using Square terminals are unable to accept the physical TCN eftpos gift cards in this deal, because Square will not process any payments through the eftpos network if you swipe a physical card.

      • A lot of the physical TCN eftpos gift cards I have seen at Coles lately are made of cardboard. I had/have a number of cardboard IKEA Returns cards rotate through my physical wallet in recent months, and found that two of them had the magstripe become non-readable. With IKEA Returns cards, there are workarounds to redeem a IKEA Returns card without swiping it. However, with a physical TCN eftpos gift card, if the magstripe stops working, you need to contact TCN and hope they are happy to issue a replacement gift card.

Indeed, a very niche promo only appealing to people who are up to no good =D

The upside is it is probably going to be very easy to buy.

      • Another one is to convert unwanted ShopBack Supermarket and TCN Grocery gift card value (any others?) into value that can be spent at non-supermarkets. I don't use those for actual groceries because closed loop gift cards are cheaper.

      • When do you think the real deal will happen (%10 off coles master card)

        • +1

Quite frankly, I do not know if we will see another one for a long time.

If you extrapolate out from the history of Vanilla Visa and Coles Mastercard gift card deals at Coles, one should have happened in October 2023, but it did not. I think you can see why I have stopped issuing predictions on those deals haha

Team members get double fly buys and 10% off (up from 5%) during this period so good for those working at Coles or who have kids working there ;)

    • +2

I'd be very surprised if it included 10% off these gift cards.

    • Is this a joke. ?

  • +1

Do they take AMEX as payment? Might work as a straightforward way for me to hit a minimum spend…

    • +1

yea, usually prefer to purchase ShopBack swap GC to meet min spend
but ShopBack dont accept AMEX so this is a good use case

  • +1

Good to meet new credit card min spend.
@wookiekonster can these be used at Australia post to pay ATO by selecting savings ?(have the physical paper with PRN)

    • Why not? The only issue is the Auspost staff who might not be happy for you to do it.

      • -1

Best to use them on self serve machines at Australia post(usually in CBD stores)

        • -1

I thought nearly all Auspost branches have closed down their self serve machines, presumably to stop people from using gift cards to pay all sorts of stuffs.

        • Melbourne CBD got rid of all self serve machines. Which stores in Metro VIC still has them?

          • +1

@lilkid28: Not only in the CBD, but every post office I have been to in Melbourne has got rid of/shut down them/used them as shelves for junk merchandise. And I frequently visit lots of post offices so it is definitely a coordinated move.

        • Haven't seen one in Qld in ages

          Prob all shutdown

  • No fee for selected activ visa egift card if visa card is preferred: https://giftz.com.au/pages/promotions

    • ya but no point if vendors have a credit card surcharge

purchasers of this deal are really:

      1. meet credit card spend requirements
      2. use for places that have no surcharge for EFTPOS but surcharge for credit cards
  • +1

If you buy a gift card that has fees… then perhaps you should have given cash or bought a gift.

    • +2

Fees are alright as long as the discount covers it plus more

  • Anyone had experiences purchasing it in store today ?

  • These would be alright when buying with a credit card and using at places that can swipe an EFTPOS card without card surcharge

E.g. car dealership for servicing 0% surcharge for EFTPOS / savings but surcharge for credit and debit cards or EFTPOS bill payment at Australia post

However lots of places now are have surcharge for any cards so need to watch out too

    • E.g. car dealership for servicing 0% surcharge for EFTPOS

Do they really want to take like bloody IDK 10x $400 payments for $4000 ??

or they probably gonna refuse due to looking suspicious

      • Regular service not going to cost that much

What you drive a Rolls Royce?

        • Ahh I thought you meant use it at dealership (like for servicing and buying cars etc.), I guess might be okay for services (not so okay for buying cars) at dealership

          • @USER DC: If I was buying a $4000 shit box

They can take $400x10 in gc

Better than counting $4000 worth of fivers :)

      • I reckon most non luxury dealers are willing to take whatever payment (possibly asking to you pay a surcharge though) to close a deal.

I have personally paid with over 200 cards for a car.

        • how about visa/mastercard directly 0.7% surcharge then probably not worth this hassel of Gift cards

  • +1

bought a few to try, good to use. only con is "check balance" just as it meant, only showing balance no transaction detail.
