    Bisto Beef Gravy Granules

Looking at the ingredients, it appears to be mainly potato starch which some artificial flavours added.

There doesn't appear to be any beef ???

I'm guessing this should be fine for Vegans?

    • +2

Looks like a just western version of MSG with added potato starch to disguise it.

      • -3

        * without the MSG

        • +2

It has 621 which is MSG.

            @ColonialBoy: 😲

            I'll have to pass then.

            I'm allergic to MSG.

            • +3

@jv: Then you can't ear tomatoes, garlic, many cheeses, shiitake mushrooms, green tea, fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, or kelp. All naturally contain MSG.

              • -2

                @ColonialBoy:

                All naturally contain MSG.

I seem to be fine with MSG from natural food.

It's the artificial MSG that is added that gives me headaches and nausea.

                • @jv: Wow, you should donate your body to science, as it's the only one ever that can tell the difference.

                  • @foursaken:

as it's the only one ever that can tell the difference.

I know a few other people that are affected by it.

Just because you're not, doesn't mean others aren't.

                    • @jv: Yeah, nah. A molecule is a molecule. No one cares how it was made.

    • There is no beef in Bovril either these days - it a bloody travesty….

This is the only gravy that's ever been in my pantry for years.

    • +5

because you hate it and won't eat it? or love it and it's the only thing you'll buy?

      50/50 chance here hahaha

        Hinee named his cat Schrödinger

      • Fair heh.

Nah there honestly aren't all that many brands in the kitchen that I exclusively go back to. This is the only gravy base I'll ever buy though.

pffft mickey mouse gravy for heathens

  • Ahh the good stuff! 💪

Thanks a bunch OP. Am on last scoop of the chicken one. Now time for the beef. Yummo!

Can anyone comment on how this compares to the Maggi Rich Gravy Mix 2kg catering tub?

    • On par or mayhaps better this. The consistency is more smoother and flavourful. A teaspoon or two goes a long way.

    • +3

In my opinion, the Maggi product is quite superior. I used to use Bisto but found it a bit lacking in flavour, as well as when reheated it would be really thin. Expensive too - even if you pay top dollar ($40) for the Maggi powder you're still in front as the equivalent volume in Bisto is over $88.

The Maggi gravy is just magic - quick, rich, cheap, keeps its body and flavour even when reheated several times. I couldn't go back to anything else!

      • yea im looking to move away, its the last nestle product in the house

    • I use this when I'm lazy as you can just add it to boiling water. Maggi for the best flavour but requires cooking

      • +1

Maggi doesn't require cooking, it can be stirred through boiling water to a perfectly smooth consistency.

        • I think its better if its boiled for a couple of mins

        • That's never worked out for me for some reason. Just never thickens.

          • @Konecs: I put it over heat if it's a big batch, otherwise just put the gravy w/boiling water in a glass and stir with a fork for a minute or so.

      • I microwave mine

    • +1

      Maggi all day…

  • Not a gravy connoisseur but I'll think stick to my cheat of using vegemite, water and corn flour heated over a stove. Saves me having too many things in my pantry.

    • Given the price of Vegemite these days, wouldn't it be more cost effective to simply buy gravy mix?

      • Or even more cost effective would buying vegetables and making a real gravy, which none of these 'sauces' are. Just sauces.

    • replace vegemite with an oxo cube

  • +1

By far the best gravy IMHO. But we haven't bought since the recent price rise. Will stock up now OP. No pun intended.

  • Forget this stuff try Knorr gravy you'll never look back.

    • As the other gravies that have been mentioned have no dairy, I need to point out Knorr gravy has dairy in it.

  • Ahhh, Bisto! I remember that from my childhood.

  • So my options are Maggi (Nestle), Knorr (Unilever), Gravox (Kraft), Greens (Pact Group) or Aah Bisto (Premier Foods)?
Not a lot of great options…

    • Is making your own an option? Is easy as, as long as you cook meat.

      • +1

"beef" stock cube and some corn/potato starch

  • +1

I'm a fan of the Bisto Gravy Granules, but noticed its a bit exe nowadays.

Then I came across the Goldenfry brand, and to me the taste is similar, but you get lots more for your $$$.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Goldenfry-Gravy-Granules-300g/dp/B…

Once you get over its cat litter look, its hard to justify the cost for Bisto.

    • This x 1000. Was about to get the Bisto at Coles, saw Goldenfry, about half the price in real terms. Every bit as good, maybe better!
