I'm only a very basic camper (eg; going to powered sites for one!), and i have this tent in the 6p version. Apart from the awning being a bit poor (it does work, but not ideal), i think its a good tent.

i watched this video so many times to get the hang of it, but still i find putting it down is a bit fiddly

  • Not a bad tent at all. I just returned from a weekend camp in one of these and the only difficult part is getting the fly over the top as my son is a bit too short to help me out with it. The darkroom feature works a treat and the LED system works great with the ozito batteries with the usb attachment.

Agree that this price is fairly regular though, no need for anyone to rush on it if you are unsure.

You neglected to mention that they have been an OzBargain member for over 2 years….

      • +9

Sure. But lurking and mixing it with us are 2 very different things. Punter has made an average of less than a comment a month. Their 2 years we can experience before a single morning tea somedays. I'm not even saying you are wrong about anything, I'm sure you're not. I just want those introverted Aussies in the shadows to feel they can and should mix it with us veterans as a bigger community always equals bigger variety of previously unspotted discounts.

The tent is has tons of space and relatively easy to set up. Way harder to take it down though. The rainfly broke on the 2nd use and had to be replaced under warranty. Just took it out after a year and the lights broke in both the rooms. Durability is definitely a problem with this tent!

  • I bought this tent on special 3 years ago for $650 and I thought that it was a great deal at the time. So given inflation, $699 is a great price I reckon. I’m still yet to actually use it though. This post has a been a good reminder for me to actually plan a camping trip this year.

Anyone know what type of USB pack to use to power the lights?

    • +1

I use my ozito batteries with the USB power station attachment. One 4Ah battery is usually enough to keep the lights going for a weekend while also charging a mobile phone or pad (although running just one room of lights on lowest level sometimes draws too little and the usb auto switches off so I always try to keep a device on charge)

      • +2

Yeah auto shutoff on the batteries is annoying. I discovered that leaving the 2 side room lights on lowest stops my power banks going to sleep and only draws about 0.08A.

This is how many amps @3.7v the room lights in this tent draw on each of their 3 settings:

        Middle Room
        0.054
        0.195
        0.417

        End Rooms
        0.045
        0.150
        0.321

Yes, the battery shutoff annoyed me enough to test all of that.

Just posting my own opinion of the tent. For the record, I've camped with this tent for the last couple years (maybe 6 or seven times) and with the older 6 person coleman instant up at least 6 times. I also usually set up the tent completely by myself, and take it down by myself.

First off, super easy setup of a tent of this size. The rain fly can be tricky by yourself, but once you throw part of it over the top of some part of the tent, you can pull and rotate to get it lined up. It's never taken me more than a couple minutes to do the rain fly myself.

Pack up, no idea why there are naysayers here. Conventional collapsible pole type tents take way longer to take down and pack up. This essentially folds down flat and you roll it up. The storage bag is generous in size making it pretty easy to pack everything away.

The biggest con is the weight. The instant-up frame for a tent this size means it's pretty heavy. Nothing can be done here other than go with a non-instant up.

The blackout coating is great for keeping light out, meaning the kids (and parents) sleep better (provided there isn't excess noise to wake them up), but if it's a warm day it turns the tent into an oven. The black coating on the fly radiates so much heat. It's a noticeable difference standing up in the tent vs sitting on the floor. You won't want to be in the tent during the day when camping during summer. I find our friend's non-blackout tents will be cooler in direct sunlight. I still prefer blackout though for the longer sleep times.

    • Agree with you OhThatsATree, I can set this up myself (am tall so have a little bit of reach), the challenge is swearing when I've tried (unsuccessfully) to throw the fly over the top and failed 45 times. Putting it down I have also done by myself. The extra awning at the front isn't intuitive IMHO and have barely used it, but it is optional so I usually don't bother with it and just hope nobody will ask "why haven't you put this part up?".
It is heavy and takes up a lot of space when you're lugging your stuff, but have zero regrets buying this tent.

      • I haven't had much trouble with the front awning. I appreciate that you can choose to use part of it or all of it. I don't usually setup the whole front awning, and choose to do just the middle 1/3rd of it since that's easier to setup and take down each day. Having the awning open overnight means you'll get tons of light into the tent come morning and defeats the blackout feature. I personally haven't found it to be any different than any other awning.

I'm personally not particularly tall (182ish i think?) and can usually drag the fly over one of the ends of the tent. From there it takes just a bit of work to center it. If you don't tie up your guy ropes when you pack it away they can snag and make this difficult (but I essentially roll them up and tie them off so they're out of the way every pack up).

  • back to $799.99 now

Consider this as an ishka type scenario… How high can you artificially inflate an RRP to offer 50% off every 3 weeks?

Brampton tents are $699 full price for 12p.

Keep in mind, 7/10 have faulty tent poles on these colemans or atleast did in the past. We got lucky and tried to set our one up outside at home, lucky we did. Faulty straight out of the box.
Replaced for an outdoor connection Brampton and the thing survived flooding and 102km/h winds! I was shocked but in those winds it wasn't fun to be in.

You can get A LOT better tent for your money in other brands but only available from tentworld or snowys. Anaconda still sells blackwolf which make a few good tents.

    • Ours has a split fibreglass pole.

Used once. I thought we might have split it while putting it up / taking it down - but your mention of it being a semi-well know fault makes me wonder if we got a faulty one…

Have you got any further info on the pole problem - I’d like to get it sorted under warranty if possible..

      • Product review website. Local anaconda store, tent world or just call Coleman themselves but they hardly ever have stock of poles as it's just so common.

The retailer will simply just throw it in the bin and the Coleman rep will send a new one to the store.

It's landfill - just an extremely bad form. We also had issues with our Coleman hyperflame $300 stove. Replaced for a Weber Q like everyone else camping.

I'd get the money back and explore GOOD tent options.. zempire, outdoor connection are safe bets. After speaking with the regular campers many did tents for 10 years before upgrading to a caravan.
