  • None of them showing as $25 for me, am I doing something wrong?

      Showing me all links $25

I was hoping to pick up a 3/8 deep set, but unforunately they all look to all be 12 point, shallow broach sockets. Nothing wrong with that, I just prefer 6 point, deep broach.

    • Handy to keep one in the garage? Is the 3/8 most common socket size for cars?

      • +1

I’ve only needed a deep socket for spark plugs (in which case you can get a single socket… preferably with the magnet or rubber thing to hold the plug).

A normal 3/8 socket set will do most things (assuming you don’t have some euro car or something that uses torx bits etc). In fact, I’d argue a normal (non-deep) socket set would be more useful as a first set because the shorter bit height means it can get into tight spaces easier… having said that there are situations when a deep set is required. I’ve heard Gear wrench is good brand. Pretty good that it comes with a socket rail too.

I purchased this from Supercheap on sale and it’s lasted me forever. Note: doesn’t come with a socket rail for organisation, also, I just do random diy maintenance domestic stuff. Link: https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sca-sca-socket-set-3-8-d…

      • It doesn't come with an actual ratchet handle. It's just a rail. These are honestly not very good 'multipurpose' kits. You'd be far better with a generic 3/8 set with shorter sockets. The sidchrome limited edition ones which came out where a great buy.

        • Agree, these are practically useless if you don’t have a ratchet or something to turn them with… the term ‘set’ in the listing refers to a range of socket sizes.

      • @ vash12 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 is the drive size (the 'square' drive at the head of the ratchet handle which fits into these sockets to turn them). Eg https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/toolpro-toolpro-ratchet-…

There's no simple answer to which is "best", esp as these sets have a different range of socket sizes to fit nuts and bolt heads. Smaller drives (1/4") are handy for tighter spaces but larger drives are generally more robust (there is more contact surface hence more force is applied as you rotate the handle). For normal home use it probably makes little difference.

The 1/2" drive set has more useful sockets imo. 10,12,13,14,16,17,19,22,24. Most small car nuts/bolts will be 10/12/14mm but others - eg wheel nuts, suspension parts, your oil sump drain plug, seat belt anchor etc - will be much bigger.

Gearwrench stuff is usually good quality. 12 point (contact inside the socket) is also very good

Agree, if they were 6 point i'd grab some spares but 12 point that's a hard pass.

    • +1

12 point no problem if you are working with a 10 year old car but if you live near the sea and you have a rusty old ride then 6 points will better.

12 point could be a life saver when you only have a breaker bar and tightspace, you know what I mean if you been there.

      • i’ve bought gearwrench 6 point ring spanners, 12 point is now my last resort when i reach into my toolkit. Gearwrench make lots of 6 point stuff, but sadly not on special at bunnings :-(

  • Is this a particularly dramatic price drop?

This is a great deal. These things are normally 50-60 depending which set

    I ordered one of each

  • 1/2” link doesn’t work for me and I can’t find it on the website.

just going to put this out here for anyone how wants more of an idea between different 6 point or the like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX4uHYEPOuY

I honestly wouldn't buy 12pt sockets. Great when everything is new, use them on an older corroded bolt and they just don't hold as well. Spend more on a better ratchet if you really need something that is easier to fit on the bolt/nut.

I agree 12 pt tend be nut fcukers.

the supercheap auto toolpro-x sockets are 6 point , but not in the $25 price point, the 3/8 toolpro-x is a delight to use, 6 point sockets, anti-slip, and quick release on the ratchet AND the extension bars …

  • FYI these are also not impact sockets so they may explode or just crack if you like to overly rattle crush your sump plug washers.

  • Bought, thanks OP!

  • I just picked up the 3/8 and 1/4 for $12.50 in scoresby.
