What Entry Level Mountain Bike Should I Get?

I was walking daily as exercise but stopped due to health problems with my feet but I want to get back to exercising. I thought that I could easily just get a bike second hand but as I am 189cm and need a XL there are none near me as I don't really live in a big city, so given that I have to buy new. what mountain bike should I get? There are bike stores here but they start around $750 which is a lot for something I just want to try out.

I did find this online ones though which is $350 + $80 shipping is this any good? again I don't know anything about bikes.

Aldi will probably bring their 29er bike out soon, I have a 2016 model https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/265723, cost $349 and has been great. It was a rebadged Polygon bike worth about $800 I believe.

The last version wasnt anywhere near as good value as the original.

  • are you actually going to be going on trails, if not, i would be looking at a road bike

    A 'hill' bike

Have a look at this site. Check out the fitness bike range.

  • The linked bike is 'budget' built on the. Heapest parts and down to a price. Mechanical disc brakes can be pretty bad and Tourney gearing is usually reserved for kmart bikes.

$750 is where its at for bike shop prices.

Best option is to try to find something second hand. You should be able to get something cheaper than half the RRP, although XL is more rare, if youre patient there should be something soon.

Something like this is a much better bike than the one you listed.

    Kmart

Fastest way to be put off cycling.

    • Average kms on a kmart bike is 35km before it goes to landfill.

    • 7 speed rear isnt great. W9" wheels would be better especially for an XL frame.

  • Trek Roscoe (used)

    • Marlin would suffice for a beginner, but an X caliber would be better for everyday use. a Roscoe is better suited for bombing down flow trails.

      • Yeah that's a fair call. I just looked up the Roscoe prices and they're a bit more exxy than I remember. I've still got my Stache 9.7 (running i30 with 2.6 though), love it!

  • 99 bikes has a 8-sp 11-32 for $388.

But 189cm? I doubt any of the cheap bikes will fit. You'll need to spend more.

    • 1x8 wouldn't suit a hilly area.

      • Just put a small chainring on for off-road if needed.

Looks like you can even add a 2nd chainring, and manually switch for off-road hilly.

        • Fine if you've got spare parts lying around, otherwise put thw cash to a different model with better gearing.

          • @Euphemistic: Meh. A few dollars on aliexpress goes far. 1x is the new black.

            • @bargaino: Id want to make sure the chainring wasnt rivetted on. They often are on cheaper bikes.

You'll get a Giant Talon 3 hardtail 29er XL for $650 from Pushy's. a good entry level "proper" MTB if that's what you want/need.
