Is There a Place to Formally Ask for Better Mobile Reception in The Area?

So we're in a bit of a mobile and internet dead spot just outside of Brisbane in the Logan area.

We are able to get some mobile coverage 4G/5G outside on the front driveway of our house. But it's patchy at best. It gets worse inside with it dropping to 1 bar of 4G or 5G in the loungeroom and next to nothing in the back rooms. It's not usable for calls even so we're forced to switch to calls over Wi-Fi, which can then lead to us not able to make calls when the power or internet is down. We're also only able to access Fixed Wireless NBN so the internet is rubbish as well (the FTTP project stalled when the contractor went broke).

I have contacted Telstra support and they walked me through some speed testing steps, which happened to show that the speed was acceptable to them at that time. It's very inconsistent, with one afternoon you can watch YouTube and then an hour later I can't even open a website. Is there a way that we can ask for them to do a review on the towers or flag them for an upgrade?

We have tried Vodafone and Optus SIMs in the off chance that they would be better. But they were just as bad or worse.

What else can we do? We can't effectively use the phone in our home.

Well, given that you've already tried the telcos themselves and they seem unwilling, the next step would be your local federal MP.

They in turn, might contact or redirect you to the Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland.

    https://minister.infrastructure.gov.au/rowland

Obviously don't expect a response anytime soon (or at all).

If you want to be cheeky, say you're considering changing your vote in the 2025 federal election. If your seat isn't marginal and the incumbent has a massive majority, then this won't work.

    • I actually put a question about the NBN to the mayoral candidates. As the FTTP rollout is a joint project between Opticomm and Logan City Council. Was supposed to be completed in October last year and the contractor went bust in September. So I'm not against reaching out to them.

  • Not sure about how to get one but look into a femtocell for your house? I vaguely remember reading yonks ago that some telcos were organising them for people with poor reception

    • I think that went out of favor when wifi calling became a thing. Femto cells still require a broadband connection and generally is limited to one specific carrier.

There are legal mobile repeaters that you can get. You might need an external donor installed. If you can get some usable signal indoor close to a window, you wont need an external donor. Look up cel-fi but they are not cheap.

  • Starlink?

    • Yes it's possible, but also costly. We shouldn't have to rely on satellite giving that we're not in the sticks.

    • Seems like a logical solution.

  • Yes. On ozbargain & your request is denied

Would a MS Paint diagram help?

    Some Telstra options here: https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/network-coverag…

Would be curious if anyone has used any of these options and if they could comment on how well they work.

    • I recommend the $107/month model…

Have you tried The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO)? They can help with faults, dropouts and poor coverage

  • Can pm me a street near you, and I can see if there’s any planned works in the area

  • You could buy a repeater (Telstra has models here https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/network-coverag… for example) this should be able to repeat the signal into your house where you need it (another poster also suggested this).

It sounds like you might be in a hilly type area or somewhere with alot of trees.
You probably need a repeater that can be raised above the tree line or be positioned higher (from the receiving aerial perspective) to receive appropriate signal.

  • Starlink could be a better option for internet. But it wont solve you mobile reception issue

  • Call launtel, Leaptel or Aussie broadband
Try each one for a month
Gotta be better than telstra, probably cheaper too
