IKEA Oven - Part Died - Warranty Claim

I bought an oven from Ikea a few years ago and the thermostat died meaning the oven just gets hotter and hotter.

I rang Ikea and asked about getting it repaired under the Australia Consumer Law (ACL) provisions. They took my date of purchase and the order number. As the oven was 6 years old and the warranty was for 5 she said no.

I quoted the ACL and she tried to the feed the details into the computer to raise a case number. The computer would not allow her to create a case. "The computer said NO". She explained she could not raise a warranty claim case if the item was outside its warranty period even if she wanted to. She said it was the case for ALL items Ikea sold. I asked about the computer system not catering for ACL provisions and she said she didn't know about this and on pressing her, she said she would raise a case number manually using a paper form and pen! The form would then be forwarded to Electrolux, the manufacturer, who would approved or refuse the claim.

Now an oven is made up of the case, a couple of knobs, a thermostat and two elements. My question is, should a warranty cover all these items? Or, in this case can the ACL provisions cover such items.

I rang Electrolux and they basically said all the items in the ovens (apart from the case) were "consumables" and are not be covered. What should I do?

  • First of all, how much is a new thermostat and if you can't replace it yourself how much to get someone to do it.

  • How much was the oven?

And how many years do you think it should be covered for under acl?

  • I bought an oven from Ikea a few years ago

the oven was 6 years old

6 year old oven - how much do you use it?

for the sake of a ~$30 part that would take ~15 minutes to swap out, then I implore you to take it to small claims tribunal.

spend months fighting this, or order the part now from ebay, and fit it next week.

how much time have you already wasted protesting about your ACL rights?

My question is, should a warranty cover all these items? Or, in this case can the ACL provisions cover such items.

as a random internet user I say "yes". <—FFS. what does it matter what randoms say.

Your problem isn't with Electrolux, it's with Ikea.

    Your oven is cooked

  • This isn't a 'my TV died two days after its 12 month warranty' issue. I would think it's quite reasonable for six years for a cheap-ass IKEA oven, it isn't a $12k Miele. 6 years is a quite reasonable period under consideration for the ACL.

I would throw out your ACL claim, although I do acknowledge the potential issues with automated systems not accepting out-of-band dates for other potentially valid ACL claims…

  • What should I do?

Contact specialist oven repairers to see if they have the parts to replace the thermostat on the IKEA oven

The cheapest fix would be to fine the part number yourself, order it online and then replace it yourself

However, ovens are usually fixed appliances meaning any electrical work without the proper reqs is illegal

Where can I get spare parts for IKEA appliances?

If your appliance is out of warranty or you have caused damage to the appliance, you can reach out to the supplier directly to potentially obtain spare parts. If you would like to know who the supplier of your appliance is, contact us with the appliance name and article number.

    • However, ovens are usually fixed appliances meaning any electrical work without the proper reqs(fairtrading.nsw.gov.au) is illegal

exactly. it is illegal to work on them yourself.

you'd need a qualified electrician to turn off the power at the mains and then double check there is no power to the oven before a qualified electrician would even start to consider changing the thermostat over.

this is a useful guide on how a qualified electrician would change the thermostat.

just spend $15 to $60 and take IKEA to xCAT and have some fun in the process. Chances are they won't show up, or will try and buy you off (AKA settle) ahead of time.

You'll need quotes to take with you, and a nice coherent story about what is going on.

I would never buy any major appliance from IKEA.
Only good for cheap expendable junk. based on your experience and that of others they clearly don't stand by the products they sell long term or offer reasonable support.

    • I don't own any IKEA appliances, but they are generally rebranded items from major manufacturers.

  • Was it this one?

Oven costs $550. Not sure if it's reasonable to expect it to last past 5 years to be honest.

A new thermostat is less than $10 delivered from China,
Less stress and effort to install than arguing with Ikea call centre.'

Order now, wait 10-14 days, make yourself a cuppa, and put on a youtube guide.

    Something like this: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005006380371897.html

You could remove the old one first to see what it looks like, and how long the pipe needs to be.
They come with a knob, which avoids the need to recalibrate. But you probably want to keep the old one, so the scale printed on the facia may need adjusting if it doesn't match.

Maybe try to find a compatible part based on the part number, but if it physically fits, they all do the same thing, just turn the element on and off.

    Just fix it yourself

Page 7 in the installation manual.
You just need an allen key and a mallet.

  • I rang Electrolux and they basically said all the items in the ovens (apart from the case) were "consumables" and are not be covered. What should I do?

Buy the part and have it installed.

  • I don't think it's reasonable to expect Ikea to fix this after 6 years. A thermostat failure is not uncommon in an oven. It's an analogue device subject to extreme environment. Even if this was within the 5 year warranty period, Ikea could/might have reasonably reduced coverage for a thermostat to 3 years - in the same way your car is warrantied against defects for years but the oil filter in the car isn't.

Fix it yourself. It's cheap. Manufacturers of the world doesn't owe you a bullet proof oven for perpetuity.
