Macquarie Bank Introducing Annual Fee on Black Credit Card for Former Hilton Platinum Card Holders

I received an email from Macquarie yesterday saying that they were changing the annual fee on my Macquarie Rewards Black credit card to $249 from 1 July 2024. However, there was a small asterisk next to the annual fee amount leading to a footnote to the email, which said:

If your financial table describes a waiver or other condition on your annual fee or annual percentage rate(s) - such as a waiver of the credit card Annual Primary Cardholder Fee while you hold a Macquarie Home Loan - this continues to apply.

I currently pay a $0 annual fee on the card because I used to hold their Hilton Honors Platinum credit card, which I applied for during their $0 annual fee promotion many years ago. The card converted to the Macquarie Black card in 2019 when Macquarie ceased its affiliation with the Hilton Honors program but I continued to have a $0 annual fee.

When I rang their call centre today to confirm whether my current $0 annual fee was a fee waiver that would continue, I was initially told yes, as my account said there was a permanent waiver of the annual card fee, but then put on hold and then later told no, as only Macquarie Home loan package customers will continue to get the annual fee waiver.

Has anyone else gotten a definite answer from Macquarie? I plan to cancel the card if I will be charged an annual fee, but don't want to cancel it if the person I spoke to gave me the wrong information and the fee waiver will continue.

Thanks.

  • I'm in the same boat. 3 of us in our household have the card from the promotional period when it was Hilton branded. We'd be looking at cancelling these cards if this fee came into effect.

  • In the same boat. Annual credit card fee $295 will apply on anniversary date from 1st July 2024.

On the phone I did mention I've been a long time Macquarie customer since Hilton Honors days etc. but they still can't waive the annual fee.

I'll be closing mine soon after redeeming all points/have no account balance and moving to a better deal :)

    • Can you share your better deal cause I am in the same boat too?

  • +1

Got the same email - will be closing it down too if they charge annual fee. Plenty of other cards have free international fees

  • Just a call from Macquarie after submitting a complaint on no clear answer relating to annual fee.

They confirmed annual fee will be charged for Hilton Honors customers too.

Time to close my account & move to another bank!

    • Although Im not surprised since Macq aren't in the business of giving out free things but would be interesting to see if someone fights the fees if/once it gets charged - as our initial Hilton card came with the fee free for life offer

I cant be bothered as I don't need the card and gives me a good excuse to finally get rid of it!

      • +1

I imagine they'd argue that technically no one has the Hilton card and everyone moved to Macquarie Rewards Black instead. It'd depend what is in the conditions of those, but I would imagine it didn't mention any lifetime offers anymore (and the usual "subject to change" conditions).

Anyone who wants to take it on could flick a complaint to AFCA now and hope for the best, but that'd be the only way to get anywhere.

  • -1

    Confirm annual fee. Byeeee

  • +1

Confirmed via chat. Fee is chargeable. It will be charged on the anniversary date of your card, after 1 July 2024.

Remember to redeem any points as they go up by ~10.5% after 1 July

  • +1

Really disappointed and still hoping they continue honour the $0 fee offer.

How can one easily check the renewal date of the credit card?
Can't see any info on the app.

  • we all should submit a complaint maybe they will change their minds if there is a backlash
is their another macquire card you can do a product transfer too that has no fee or lower?

    • No, it won't work. I think bank like MQ knows to make this move after 5 years with the minimum negative impact. People forcibly switching from Woolworths to MQ last year may face the similar situation after a few years.

    • It's unlikely they'll change their minds, they're only black card on the market where it was possible to not have an annual fee without manually getting it waived.

  • i just read the email which is in general in nature the same notice on their website to all card holders so maybe it wont apply to the old hiltion ones? Anyone still have their hilton card LOA so i can read the original offer we signed up for. I wonder if it stated no annual fee for life?

  • Can I legally sell a product, such as cloud storage, advertised as "free for life" and then start charging customers later, similar to bank practices? Can any lawyers provide insight on this?

  • I alsojust called and got confirmed my Hilton $0 fee will not be honoured as this is a "new business decision going forward".

As I understand they only been offering these cards to home loan customers since 2 years ago I think?

They would be getting next to no margi from me as I pay closing balance everytime.

I was told I need to close before end of July to not pay $249 fee.

Since the also devaluing points for gift cards and capping point earn , then more reason not to pay $249 fee

However can I ask this question below in my next post….

  • Keen to hear what others are switching to?

I would like to find a provider with following benefits similar to my Macquarie black card:

    1) no overseas transaction fee

    2) good fx rate (close to xe.com rate)

    3) app that informs every time transaction takes place

    4) not an amex (already have 2) only visa or mastercard

    5) no fee or at least low fee or if over $100 fee at least comes with good perks/rewards/points

So far I think Bankwest, ING and the 28 Degree card might be the go?

    • You could also consider CBA Ultimate or Smart card. Both charge monthly fees but are waived provided you meet minimum monthly spend criteria (Ultimate charges a higher fee and has higher spending criteria for waiver).

Both have no forex fees and are exchanged at the MC rate which is as close to the xe.com rate as you'll get if you're not a financial institution. Dunno if the app will notify you of transactions, but from my friends' experience I think you can set it up so that it does. It's an MC so no need to worry about Amex acceptance.

CBA rewards are known to be basically a joke, but if you spend big, they can end up being OK value. Ultimate card also comes with 2 free loung entires per year.

    • Look at Coles Rewards

    • yep, those, and Bendigo ready credit card

    • +1

Bankwest 0 annual fee will not charge overseas fees. You do not need to bank with them or meet any condtions.

ING will (3%) and they are not to be trusted as quite ofteh the make bonus offer that frequently and convinently do not honor - their customer service team is clueless.
They offer rebates if you also have bank accounts with them and meet criteria each previous month (onerous & easily missed - $1000 deposit + 5 debit card transactions)
If you also bank with them perhaps yes - if not it is an easy pass.

I provided feedback to MQ re new annual fee $149 (from 1st July 2024, will be charged to MQ Platinum card. Previously was Woolworths Everyday CC customer with zero fee,

For those who may be interested , below is MQ response:
“We understand that you've raised concerns with the changes that are being made to the fees and reward points associated with your credit card, and we're sorry to hear you're disappointed with these changes.

We carefully consider the changes we make to our product offerings and we're unable to provide more information about this decision or to make an exception or reverse these changes.

Should you wish to close your account, please reach out to our specialist team on 1300 150 300 or if you are calling from overseas, on +61 2 8232 1684. Alternatively, you can close your account via online/mobile banking by following the instructions found here …”.

Cancelling MQ cards. ANZ zero fee first year and get paid seems like the way to go.

    • Which ANZ credit card is a good replacement for Macquarie? They offer so many different ones…

    • I got the same response when I complaint - but did not accept their weak argument and got a refund of the $249 charged in August. I am stll following up to see if I can have my no annual fee status reinstated. If you don't ask you do not get. Like any other loan shark, they are counting on credit dependency and acceptance of what they say as irrefutable (they are wrong on both counts). Whoever worded the email they circulated back in April should be send back to school as it was badly worded and at best ambiguous. Obviously they never engaged a professional legal team to prepare a statement that is bullet-proof. And what the heck "your financial table" means, do they expect anyone to uderstamd that including themeselves -:) amateurs !!!

  • How are we supposed to know when the anniversary date of our card is?

I initially thought it was the month of expiry of the card - then realised that the expiry cycle of cards isn't a multiple of 12 months which makes it tricky to work out when I first registered for the Macquarie card all those years ago

  • Macquarie's move is pure greed. My $69 fee is going up to $149!! More than double….
I'm going to close all my accounts, including savings and transaction accounts soon.

    • Sorry but how is it pure greed when it's still the cheapest black card on the market (not counting psuedo-black cards like Kogan)? All the other ones have significantly higher annual costs.

  • New macquarie black card has annual fee of $149 instead of $249. I'm going to try to call them see if they can match the annual fee into $149.

  • Weird - I was going to cancel my card but was double checking with Macq when my new annual fee would kick in as I was speaking to them about some fraudulent transactions. They said annual fee would still be waived on this for life

    • They told me fee $249 charge sometime in July.

Assume same for others as to commence in new financial year.

Coming back here after 30 June to see if they did indeed follow through

  • +2

I contacted Macquarie today about the $149 fee shown online and they confirmed the previous correspondence for the $249 was apparently in error now (totally different to when I first asked) and that the $0 annual fee would be honoured. Getting it in an email as well.

    • Who did you email? Can I get the email address?

      • Was through the chat on Macquarie website. They don't do transcripts and I'm still waiting for their customer service to confirm in writing.

The card itself appears to have changed. When I first got the notification the updated terms on their website was showing lounge passes but I think they scrapped the changes.

        • Did you manage to get a written confirmation?

          • @jazzleg: Annoyingly nope! If you try their online chat they should be able to confirm for you as well though.

    • +2

I am ready to cancel the card and paid off all the balance, redeemed all the points and went for online chat today.
The CSR confirmed that my card has a permanent fee waiver and it will still apply after the change on July.
I have asked for an email confirmation, which will be sent in a couple business days, and also requested a reference number for our conversation.
I guess I can keep this card for a bit longer.

      • Did you open the card from the hilton macquarie offer?

        • +1

Yes. That's how most of us in this thread got it I reckon?

          • @mily: Weird, the online chat confirmed that the $149 will be applicable to my account next financial year. I guess you are lucky.

            • @hnl: When was this, hnl?

              • @pencilman: 28/06/24 at ~16.30

                • @hnl: That's strange. Maybe the others have other accounts like a Macquarie Transaction account, or have used the card more. Or maybe it's just an online chat person who wasn't aware of the fee waiver.

                  • +1

@pencilman: Idk. I have no other account with MQ nor home loan. It's my main card for living expenses etc. in the last few years but not huge usage. I redeemed ~510k points for $2600 giftcards before contacting them, so in average about $50k spending on the card per year since 2019, I don't think that would make big difference.
Anyway, I am still waiting for an email confirmation, and in the worst case that doesn't arrive, I kept the screenshots of my online chat and the reference number. Let's see how it goes after July.

                    • @mily: Follow-up.
No email received after 2 weeks, I suspect it will show up by itself.
Has anyone else got an email confirmation to lock it in?
I may contact again and request for an official confirmation, nothing to lose.

        • Did you close before hit with the fee? I am interested to see if anyone got a full refund. I was told they will do a pro-rata refund, but I am interested if everyone is being treated the same or they do exemptions (despite saying they don't)

  • +3

Confirmed via live chat and call centre that my account still has an annual fee waiver.
This was after talking to them in April and being told a fee would be applied.
Looks like miscommunication initially or they’ve changed their minds.

    • I think those who pay no annual continues. The increase only affects those paying it. For notification email, it can not differentiate among all the cardholders. If it says some pay no annual fee to everyone, it makes others unhappy.

  • +1

Still no annual fee charge shown up yet, finger crossed doenst turn of end of month Wednesday

    • +1

It should have turned up on your anniversary day or yours is yet to come (mine is tomorrow). Otherwise, it doesn't apply.

      • Did you confirm that your annual anniversary is July?
Fingers crossed the new fee doesn't apply and the fee waiver continues.
        Please let us know.

        • +1

Yeah my anniversary date was 15 July and now on 31st still nothing but I guess there is still 24 hours it could show up….its the final countdown!

        • +1

No annual has been charged yet. Mine is Woolworths to Macquire. It has been well past card request and activation anniversary date in this financial year.

        • I decide to take back what I said previously, but not unpublish it for reference purpose. Although I requested and activated the MQ Platinum CC in July and August last year, my initial Woolies brand CC was issued in Feb. In other words, my anniversary date is probably indeed in Feb when the annual fee is supposed to be charged.

  • Has anyone got charged their annual fee yet ?. I haven't but my anniversary is November.

    • +4

So my anniversary was July, and they told me back in April per their updated T&C letter that I would be charged come mid-July, however nothing has been charged.

So either it is free for life as first applied or there will be a fee from next year?

Either way I am still using the card as my primary intl travel card and domestic spend when my Qantas amex is not accepted.

    • I got charged today for $249

      • And you got confirmation about $149 is the fee to be charged, right?

      • If your initial offer was the 1st year no annual fee, obviously from the second year, you are subject to the current annual fee. When someone answered to your question, he only referred to the rate at that time.

I think most people discussing here got permanent no annual fee offer.

        • My offer is the hilton offer so no annual fee

          • @hnl: Same here. My anniversary would be around mid-September, let's see what happens.

            • @mily: Did you end up getting charged?

I got charged the annual fee mid-Sept and they despite back and forth they will not reinstate the permanent annual-fee waiver.

              • @Garbotoxin: This reminded me about the annual fee and just checked, yes, I got charged $249 on 26/Sep like everyone else.
So it's all BS from the online customer service.
                Bye MQ before next September.

  • Actually, I never received any email or other advice - and definetely no advice or message to any fee when logging on online to check my statements.

I was checking my online statement just earlier, as they currently have a problem not showing my balance (with payent is due tomorrow) and noticed I was charged the $249 fee for the first time on August 12th.

Not at at all happy as if I was properly advised I would have switched back to the free COLES or AMERICAN EXPRESS cards that I held before deciding to just keep this card during the COVID period.

Has anyone managed to get them to refund the fee ? I will contact them tomorrow.

I also had the Hilton Honours card that was supposed to be fee free for life and that continued with the Macquarie Black Card (until it was not)
Hopefully it is just a an accounting mix-up, and they wil continue to honour the zero fee agreement.

A $249 fee jump from zero is significant. I also found that my NBN service provider started charging me a $10 extra each month, and also failed to send me an email to advice before hand. We all know that the cost of living is going up (inflation) but this is ridiculous. I will defnitely not stay with this card if they do not refund the $249.

    • Is that the date also your previous HH CC's anniversary date? I suspect that it has nothing to do with the issuance date of your new MQ CC.

  • Oh dear. That's super disappointing.
Hopefully it's just an accounting error.
If not, I think if they have just recently charged the fee you can raise a complaint and have the fee refunded and cancel the card.
    Keep us updated.

  • +3

I send an email yesterday to [email protected], asking for a refund. They came back with a case reference number mid-day today.
I saw no point in wasting my time on the chat line or talking to clue-less customer service officers on the phone - usually an email works best (if you know where to send it) -:)

Thanks for your email. We'll process your request as soon as possible and if we need any further information, we'll be in touch. Your case reference is: xxxxxxxx

This is what I stated in support of my case - I think any reasonable person receiving an email about changes to their terms and conditions, stating that their annual fee is increasing cannot automatically deduct if they never paid a fee, they now will do so. That is a very valid legal point if they insist that is what they meant and did.

As an example of what may work (not a proven case yet) this is what I send them

    Re: Macquarie ID XXXXXXXXXX

While checking my online card statement, payment due today, I was surprised to see an annual fee charge.

I signed up for the Hilton Honors card (zero fee for life) almost a decade ago and enjoyed all the benefits that came with it.

The card was then converted to the Macquarie Black Card, minus the Hilton benefits but staying on a zero-fee basis.

At no point I received any clear communication to advice me that I will go from a zero fee basis to a fee based subscription.

I am extremely unhappy being hit with an unexpected fee for $249 on 12th of August.

I sincerely hope this was an unintended side-effect of increasing your fees for existing and new fee-based card subscriptions.

Looking forward to an explanation and more importantly a full refund of the $249.

    Regards

    XXXXXXXXX

So after waiting for a week to hear back from Macquarie, on my case raised to refund the fee, I contacted them via chat.
It is obvious that their help center is based overseas (and they are doing the best they can) - I got escalated to 3 different levels with nobody being able to make a decision.
I asked for a final escalation (higher it could go) to review the case before I make my final decision.

Basically their out of the box answer is " We made a policiy decision to raise fees and there will be no exemption"

My argument is that "I was not a fee paying member, so an increase is not applicable", "if you were going to change my plan from a zero basis to a fee basis you need to explicitly let me know and give me an oportunity to opt out" (they did not)

So I already applied for both a Virgin Money & Coles Mastercard, this week, and got approved next day on each for a credit line of $30K each

I will change all my direct debits and other payments to the Coles/Flybuys card (keep the Virgin as back up when travelling) and then cancel the Macquarie Card.
They said they will refund unused fee portion on a pro-rata basis. Before I cancel I will make use of all my rewards points as well.

I will also report them to the Financial Ombdusman, as I am sure they cannot charge someone $249 without adequate prior advice and they can deal with. If everyone else caught in this complaints perhaps the backlash will make them change their mind (but not sure about that - banks have very thick skin these days - almost bullet-proof)

    • Your opt out option is to close the account.

It would be in the T&C’s you agreed to that allows them to charge a fee

  • +1

After doing a bit of research, it appears to me that the timing of the fee increase decision, coincides with the ASIC penalty of $10Million AU

April 19 (Reuters) - The Federal Court of Australia has fined Macquarie Bank A$10 million ($6.4 million) for its lack of controls to detect and prevent unauthorised fee transactions carried out by third parties on customer accounts, the securities regulator said on Friday.19 Apr 2024

So ASIC imposes a penalty for bad behaviour, and the customers end up paying the fee (even worse behaviour) while their CEO gets paid $25+ million a year !!!!!!

Chief executive Shemara Wikramanayake's pay fell from $32.8 million to $25.2 million, as the commodities-fuelled bonanza cooled for the investment behemoth. Former Macquarie rainmaker Nick O'Kane's pay dropped from $57.6 million in 2023 to $1 million this year.3 May 2024

    • Today's news: ASIC fines Macquarie Bank $4.995m for ‘manipulating energy markets’.

Yes, another annual fee increase is looming.

    • Any update on this situation? I didn't even see this thread till I got charged my own fees.
      Have nothing in emails etc.
Looking to cancel the card and get a refund of the Annual Fees.

I just called macquarie as I wanted to downgrade my black card to platinum which has a lower fee of $149. The staff (Jom) told me that my black fee will be waived next year since I moved from hilton card but cannot refund the fee that I paid last month. So I am going to hold my black till 2026.

I just found a way to check anniversary month without contacting customers support. Check your account statement history. In my case, I scroll down to the bottom and find the first statement was in March 2019, which means the account was opened in February (or be more accurate, the anniversary date should be backdated about 30 days).

MQ keeps and continues your statements with the previous brand. I think you can view the new MQ card as a replacement that doesn't affect your account history.

  • Sadly, 3 months post commencement of the new Macquarie Annual fee it looks like they are refusing to honour the $0 annual fee. Thanks Neoika for identifying how to find out when the anniversary month is.

    @Ave Maria

Basically their out of the box answer is " We made a policiy decision to raise fees and there will be no exemption"

    @mily

This reminded me about the annual fee and just checked, yes, I got charged $249 on 26/Sep like everyone else.
So it's all BS from the online customer service.

    • despite having been told earlier that the fee free would continue :(

Anyone had any success with having Macquarie honour the $0 annual fee???

    • After two phone calls with customer service, I’ve got the annual fee that was paid in August refunded. A green credit of $249 “Annual Fee Refund” shows up in my statement, but they will still charge me next year. Will need to close the account before the next anniversary.

      • I got exactly the same (refund of the $249) and will cancel the card as soon as all my direct debits are sorted out to a new card and my balance is paid out.

  • Closing the loop on this - with great sadness the fee free Macquarie Black nee Macquarie Hilton card is no more.

Those being charged can negotiate a one off annual fee rebate, but advised that they will be charged in subsequent years despite mixed earlier messages from customer service.

It's a pity that Macquarie has not seen it worthwhile to keep this client base and income from their card usage.

    • It is pure greed. I would have possibly kept the card if the original Hilton benefits came back. Was OK as a zero annual fee rewards earning card, but after doing the math on my annual spend, it is not worth keeping. I already applied for and have received 4 new zero annual fee cards (COLES/VIRGIN/AMEX/BANKWEST) and BENDIGO pre-approved but stuck in the queue -:) - I cashed out all my rewards points and once my final bill is paid I will close the account. Their loss in the end if they think that reducing their user base and brand exposure is a good straregy. The COLES card gets me enough flybuys converted to $$$, AMEX has lots of special offers with cashback and discounts + QANTAS points, the others are just backup and I may use the BENDIGO card for free travel nsurance if & when I travel. I also started using the HSBC debit card on most face to face purchases as it gets me a 2% cashback for purchases up tor $100 (I even split payments at the supemarket if over $100) and I do not get a surharge on it in places like ALDI. So, overall, I end up much better off not using the MB card.

Update from late November. They are no longer offering a one off annual fee rebate. Went through the live chat and got them to lodge a formal complaint. Resolution came back as basically fxxx off we're not offering any annual fee waivers. Feel free to cancel the card if you wish. Absolute dogshit service. They don't want any business. I wouldn't even consider Macquarie in the future for any other bank accounts or home loans.
