Honestly that doesn’t bother me. Alcohol, especially spirits, should be an occasional thing.
High taxes should bother everyone.
Why? We need taxes for essential services. There is a reason that alcohol and cigarettes attract higher taxes. They are not essentials and they are harmful substances. I much prefer they get tax money off something like this than apply taxes to things like fresh fruit and vegetables.
@try2bhelpful: Then You are browsing the wrong category of Ozbargainers old son !
@Daddy74: Personal thought. I realise others will disagree.
@try2bhelpful: "High Taxes" is not the same as "Taxes"
Taxes are requirements and that is fine. A tax of 80% is obscene.
@ajr5k: As I said we can disagree. Alcohol is not an essential product. I would much prefer it has a high tax component than anything on fruit and vegetables.
I usually get the cheapest $42 ish vodka from the nearest liquor store.
Alcohol is so expensive these days
Yeah $42 Vickers gin is my go to these days
What size bottle? This is 1L.
700ml so $42 v $59 for a litre
6c per ml compared to 5.8 per ml.
Question:Does Dan Murphy match or beat Costco?
We get so ripped off by the Aus Government on spirits, take this bottle as an example
$58/11 = $5.27 in GST
Alcohol tax is $101.85/liter of pure alcohol, so for this bottle it is
1L * 0.4 (alcohol content) * $101.85 = $40.74 in alcohol tax
So all up you are paying $46, or nearly 80% of the price in taxes!
And the glory of the alcohol tax, it is indexed to inflation every 6 months, wish they did that indexing with tax-bands for income tax….
