      Unpopular opinion but I agree.
$1500 is A LOT of money. I remember when flagships could be had for around AUD $700. So this is more than double that. That's so much money that you can't help but kind of expect the latest/greatest for that price. And this phone here is not that.

For those arguing "but you get 1TB" well that's not a valid reason, I would much rather if it came with 256GB Storage and a microSD Slot. There was that Amazon deal a couple days ago for the SanDisk 1.5TB card for about $100 just fyi.

So what about the S23U, in comparison to the S24U. Well the older phone is actually superior in two major ways. First the chipset, the QC 8g2 is still superior to the E2400 in terms of driver support and overall efficiency. Secondly the camera, the older x10 optical lens is much better than the new x5 zoom. But where the S24U really shines is in these few key changes; firstly the new display has an anti-reflective compound that greatly increases visibility under direct sunlight. And secondly the new 7+ Year Software Support from is a big improvement over the 4 Years that's left on the S23U, and this will affect the phone's resale value.

      • +1

I believe the S24U gets the snapdragon chip.

      • -1

The S23U is definitely worth the asking price. Though it could be had for much cheaper. I upgraded from the iPhone 12. I actually paid more for the iPhone than this phone.

Also the S24U comes with the Snapdragon 8 gen 3.

"I would much rather if it came with 256GB Storage and a microSD Slot"

well we all would but they don't do that anymore for flagships so not sure how on earth this is relevant? are you also still asking for a headphone jack and replaceable battery?

        • -1

          Sure.
Also let's get back FM Radio and IrDa Blaster 🙂. Don't know how to approach this besides to just point it out. Sony seems to be the last OEM offering some options on their flagships. Even though they're no longer local, vote with your wallet ?

(Samsung xCover 6 Pro was nearly perfect)

PS: yes people, i forgot Samsung switched out the E2400 for the QC 8g3 only for the S24U. The other phones get a downgrade.

  • That's not a bad price because even with edu discount, you're looking at about 2k.

    • +1

I bought a Samsung 24 ultra 512GB for about $1100 and got a Watch 6 Lite for free.

      • That's incredible, was that with trade in credit or preorder?

          • +5

@jimojr: So…your cost would also include whatever it was you traded in. No?

Otherwise it's like…'hey I upgraded to an iPhone 15 Pro Max for only $100'. Oh never mind I had to give them another iPhone 15 Pro Max.

            • +1

@hippo2s: My phone's trade in value is Only $5, so I kept my phone and they changed me $60.

            • @hippo2s: You keep the phone and pay a ~$60 penalty. You'll still get the bonus trade in credit. I did it for the S22 Ultra a couple years ago.

              • @Timm: ah… the not-really a trade in trade in discount… cool. good.

      • Do you have a link for that deal

      • -1

Thay looks like it would have been $1500, not bad. You also have to factor in the amount you would have lost trading the phone rather than selling.

      • Need samsung edu account for the preorder, alot of ppl arent in tertiary education anymore…

This or Google Pixel 8 pro?

    • +1

Depends on what you want.. Software of hardware. Hardware wise, the S23 Ultra 1TB kills any Pixel phone in terms of CPU, storage, memory, screen, camera specs etc. Software is better with Google as they are more frequent with updates and more on the edge with that area (they are foremost a software company more than hardware).

      • +1

Last few gen pixels have been shit. Underpowered and overpriced.

    • Battery on the pixels sucks. - P7P owner, S21U owner.

Pixel do Good photos, smooth OS. But yeah, the Ultras are much better overall.

  • +1

I paid about $1800 for mine with Gov pricing when it came out. Love it.

Most hard core S23 Ultra users will swear that the S24 Ultra is a downgrade with less zoom on the cameras and realistically the only thing "upgraded" was some software AI capabilities in general and a slightly faster chip.

    • +2

S23's getting all the AI capability with the next software update

      • Only partial.. won't get all the S24 features though

        • The S24 Ai features are only free for 12 months then they will have to pay to keep them.

    • +2

the only s24u thing i wish to have on my s23u is the bloody flat screen.

      • It's not too flat.
The S24+ is much flatter, and better.

Honestly would've got that phone, but I don't want the Exynos. And don't want to pay over $500 for anything without having some sort of warranty coverage (ie not grey market). Also the Samsung's have gotten even more "secure" and it's not worth it if you want root. And forget about Custom ROMs if that's your jam. And it's gotten stupidly expensive, and don't justify it with "but the storage". Nope.

        rant:
Just give me a cheap 256GB unit, and let me slap in a microSD card. Then I can hot-swap the cards when I want to access certain things (ie Store several microSD cards in my wallet, eg One for Movies, One for Video Games, one for Work Files). And no, Cloud Storage and Streaming is not the answer. Until 5G connection can be as ubiquitous as say 3G, it's not going to be reliable. And even then you gotta pay extra, there's more lag and delay, and some other company can put their dirty hands on your data. So yeah nah.

Right now the Google Pixel 8 Pro looks good, but based on its performance it's definitely NOT flagship. And should not justify a flagship price. I think AUD $900 is fair for the 512GB model. But tell em his dreaming. That won't happen until 1-2 years, when it's really been "obsolete" and then it's value should be closer to AUD $500. But I digress. Maybe it's best to just buy an ex-flagship but one from the Used Market and just put up with the nonsense. That's what I'm recommending from now. Plenty of people who aren't the sharp and easily parted with their cash for the latest shiny toy, willing to let go of their "old trash" for cheap that can be your "midrange treasure". That's what I'll keep telling myself : )

        • If you want custom ROMs on Samsung, you're going to have to go Exynos. At least in the US, most of the Snapdragon variants are even more locked down than their Exynos counterparts.

          • @ldd-mn: Not really.
That used to be the case way back when, but the modding scene has changed. There's much less demand for Custom ROMs since around 2016/Android 5.1 and beyond. Especially with Samsung's OneUI builds. So "less need".

Also, since then Samsung has incorporated new security measures that makes it harder to access bootloader, root, let alone change things even lower in the bonnet. So "higher difficulty".

Couple that with the price of Samsung's flagships going up anywhere +50% to x3 depending on your locale, it seems less likely that the devices are getting into hands of Devs. And those people who would be tinkerers just don't want to risk voiding their warranty or just bricking their new expensive device. So "lower demand".

And even their modern devices, S10 and newer, well they're still getting updates. Which means the community hasn't had the need to intervene as much. But what isn't getting as well supported, and isn't as secure, seems to be Samsung's cheaper devices. So the F, M, and A-series of new phones seem to get more community participation. The most active threads seem to be the old Samsung devices. Have a look yourself:

The only thing I don’t like buying galaxy series in Oz that it doesn’t come with dual physical sims.

    • +2

Get the Hong Kong import then. They still have the second physical SIM in it, but you end up losing the eSIM capability though.

    • That's odd, I'm in NZ and my S23 has dual physical SIM and eSIM (with 2nd SIM disabled)

  • +1

Oh man I am tempted, still rocking my S21U but it's still completely fine with no lag

    • Same… Have a 2yr old phone that still lasts all day and I'm not a heavy user..

    • +1

Yeah am still on s21u also. Haven’t found a really compelling reason to change yet.

      • Camera is noticably better. Battery life would be wearing down in the s21u.

        • I had battery kit done after a screen repair with Samsung care. So battery is fine. Camera i agree with.

    • +1

I am on 5 yr old S10 5G and still no compelling reason to upgrade. I would like to have dual sim and better battery but not worth $1500.

      • I am using s10 with no lag too after a nap of apps downloaded and sdCard for my files and backup.
There is really no need to upgrade.

      • I had a note 9 before upgrading to the s24U, honestly the note 9 was still holding up strong but started to crash and didn't work well with later versions of Microsoft's authenticator. MS teams and outlook started to get me to sign back into my work account multiple times a day

  • May I ask is the phone genuine or refurbished please? Does it come with Australian warranty?

    • Genuine?

    • +2

No, its a fake dummy phone 😬

  • This would be amazing for preparing, shooting and editing videos. One stop shop.

No need for a DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

  • This or the OnePlus 12 (CN import with Oxygen)

    • +1

This or 1.2 kg Skin-on Samon?

      • I tip my hat to you sir / ma'am for this comment; funny as fk.

However, having been a long time OP fan I do not know what the salmon would be in this situation. Specially since can get the OP12 24gb 1tb at less than this price.

        Any actual opinion to share?

        • +1

this one is a way better phone, been using past 1 year.

  • Black and cream color still available with 1tb storage option just search it up. Ppl bought up all the green colored ones though, maybe they thought green was the only color available. I ordered the black model which I prefer over green and still stock remaining.

  • Got JB to price match the Cream. Unfortunately they wouldn't match the black as it sold out with Center Com

    • No 1.2% surcharge so all good. Only got until midnight to buy it. Then use the $30 perks coupon so $1469.

  • s24 ultra has flat screen and s23 ultra has curved. much better s-pen note taking experience on s24u as handling those curved edges while jotting things felt weird

  • lolol @ 234g phone, 200 MP camera.

  • This seems to be available again.

  • Please be aware, no returns accepted by Centercom even if unopened and even within 14 days of purchase. No change of mind whatsoever. Whilst a good deal unless you are sure you want it, do not buy.
