It’s known as a 50/50 fridge. It’s only got a 50/50 chance of getting into your house.

    • +3

As a gacha gamer, I like those odds

    • +2

And a 50/50 chance of a technician callout to fix design faults.

    • Let's first talk about the odds Samsung actually despatches the unit.

  • +25

Buyer beware! I bought the 471L model of this fridge years ago on a similarly good deal. It was recommended by Choice at the time. It only lasted 5 years.
I won't ever buy a Samsung fridge again, no matter how good the deal is.

    • +5

Must be very model or luck dependant, have a Samsung fridge that's coming up to 15 years and still going strong.

      • +7

Feels like every brand has stories of people getting duds

        • +6

And you can bet you will hear allllll about them on OzBargain. Lol..

        • +5

People only rarely make a song and dance about how great their fridge is.

        • +2

And Samsung leads the scoreboard with 50%+ of those stories.

      • I feel like by that age it might need regassing or new seals to operate efficiently.

        • +1

Seals yes, the freezer needs to be intentionally pushed closed but then stays sealed.

Gas no, unless the loop is damaged and there's a leak the gas should last the lifetime of the unit.

    • +3

Both my Samsung fridges are working fine.

1 x Top Mount coming up to its 16th year
1 x Side by Side coming up to its 13th year

Not dismissing your experience, but I'd say every brand has its lemons.

      • +2

Mine is a bottom mounted one SRL446DLS 424L that I got two years ago and it has a knocking sound coming from inside. Guess I should have it looked at. Not a fan of lemons without a Carona!

        • +1

it has a knocking sound coming from inside

You should let your mother in law out.

        • +1

Knocking sound can be normal from expansion and contraction of materials due to the temperature changes from opening and closing. Happens to our Fisher & Paykel regularly and it's close to 13 years old.

      • The problem with this idea is you have to factor in the average cost of the model/brand to decide whether it's poor value or not.

      • Every brand does have its lemons but Samsung whitegoods is a lemon tree. Easy to just avoid them entirely. Also this is a really deep fridge which as has been said will make it difficult to fit through standard doors.l and may stick out more than is ideal in many cavities.

    • +14

Only thing Samsung makes good are phones, stay away from whitegoods, LG is heaps better!

      • +14

I agree. I've only read horror stories of all Samsung white goods. I would personally avoid.

      • +3

Samsung makes excellent exploding phones 🤣

      • LG sucks too and their support has gone down from question-free replacements to attempts to long wait times and no repair. Especially for fridges.

      • +1

SSD and monitors actually. Phones were infamous for self-combustion and battery swelling.

        • Still they managed to stay and compete with apple… :-)
At one point it was apple or samsung (kinda synonym for android)!

      • Depends on luck as well I think. Have a Samsung washing machine - still going strong after 7+ years of heavy use. Had it in storage for one year( after 2 years of use). Then taken out of storage, ran a cleaning cycle and still using it without issues.

      • +1

Just be mindful with LG - many positive reviews, especially in the US, however they have a class action lawsuit pending on some of their fridge compressors:

        https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&sca_esv=0d5…

If I was looking today, probably would keep LG in top 3 choices and skip Samsung unless it was a good price like these.

I have owned two Samsung entry level fridges.

First last several years then started not cooling as well. Second is several years again and holding up okay. Compressor became noisier after two weeks and has stayed that way.- not too noticeable, but it was definitely quieter the first two weeks.

      • I hear bad reports about LG whitegoods also TBH.

    • +1

We were lucky , Our Samsung died at 18 months . Known problem , the same fridge sold elsewhere had a recall .
Repairman turned up with a very large box replaced the part in 5 minutes and assured me it would now last a lot longer .
It's now been about 12 years and still going strong .

      • +1

It's almost like it was better that you had a fridge that was so bad they addressed the problem with a revised part.

    • I must have bought the same one you did, terrible.

    • Oh I had the same model…mine lasted only 3 years..what a waste.

    • My Samsung fridge turns 22 this year, never in a million years expected it to last that long.

  • +1

Top mount freezers… Should be illegal.

    • why?

      • +1

        agreed.
doesn’t make sense that frozen stuff is easier to be seen than your everyday stuff

    • +1

You would think they'd be more efficient though

      • Why?

      • +2

        You realise cold air sinks

        • Even in the vacuum of a copper pipe?

  • I think you can stack this with the American express credit card offer, Samsung spend $500 and get $100 back.

  • Shows out of stock on Education Store

  • +2

Loud noisy compressors, ill never buy a samsung fridge again

  • +1

What's the best fridge for $800?

    • There's really nothing at the $800 mark that compares to this in size and features, even if Samsung seems to have a bad rep for fridges

  • Just bought for $769 via App. Hopefully the Amex $100 will track.

  • I have an LG and Samsung, 1.5 years old. Samsung has the water connected. They replaced a large Maytag 680l and an old upside down Hoover 500l.
Power bills have dropped dramatically and the inverters run quietly.
    Both are very good.

As discussed many times previously on OzBargain, friends do not let friends buy Samsung whitegoods (fridges, washing machines…).

But to each their own. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • +1

I have this fridge, got it about 3 years ago and it’s been working great.

I got a great deal at the time as it was middle of covid so only paid about $650 for it.

The only problem with this fridge is its size. I’ve moved homes since buying it and current place it doesn’t fit in the fridge area of the kitchen. So I have it slightly out of the kitchen area haha.

But this I guess is also why it’s a good fridge, because it fits so many things!

I also have a power meter connected to it and can see its average daily usage is about 1.4kwh which is quite good compared to old fridges and given the size of this one.

Only downside I can think of for this fridge is that if freezer is too full and the door doesn’t close all the way, if the gap is very small, the sensor doesn’t realise and it’ll slowly start defrosting your stuff. So I guess lesson here is not to stuff your freezer too full lol

    • No because to create the account they require an email code

Samsung.. white goods.. no thank you.

  • Damn I was waiting for Unidays to let me access Samsung Education, which they did really quickly to be fair, but the fridge was sold out this morning.

    My personal experience here:
    1) My Samsung fridge lasted like 3 years (after warranty finished yep).
    2) "Samsung online store (including Education)" customer support is rubbish. They outsource customer support in somewhere in Southeast Asia. When you mentioned something about consumer right or ACCC with them, the Samsung agent was like "huh?"

    • +1

I think I have been lucky in this regard, I actually bought a second hand fridge, it broke almost immediately, I called Samsung it was three years old and outside of warranty, I was all ready to argue consumer rights and warranty until reasonable expectation, but they didn't bat an eye and organised someone to come and repair it without fuss.

I had a similar experience when the Wifi on my tv stopped working and my dryer drum stopped spinning.

Which is good and bad, bad that everything keeps breaking within a few years of the warranty expiring, but good that each time they didn't make a fuss and just had someone come to repair.

    • +1

Samsung warranty on their most expensive items is a nightmare. Had a $15k ducted aircon system and they took months to fix a brand new installation, guy refused to admit it was a fault on a module at install. Even came on site himself to prove me wrong, found I was right and replaced it. Took 3 months to get to that point. I’ll never touch Samsung products again. Samsung are ignoring major issues with fridges in the USA failing I cant imagine why anyone would risk it. Great tvs, good phones but terrible terrible support and warranty and complete denial of issues
