Recommendations for New Laptop Business Use - Budget $2000

I am looking for recommendations for a new laptop. Budget $1500-$2000

I work 100% remotely. My business is Bookkeeping and Accounting Services.

Current laptop is a Dell which is 8 years old.

Currently looking between another Dell or perhaps a Lenovo.

Occasionally when I am travelling I take my laptop with together with a portable monitor so I have two screens.

  • If you're travelling overseas, you may find cheaper laptops in Malaysia, HK, Taiwan, Dubai

Based on your requirements, you may want to consider something like the Lenovo ThinkPad E16 , a few noteable features that might be suitable for your requirements:

    • keyboard includes numpad for bookkeeping/accounting.
    • the screen is 16:10 aspect ratio so there is more vertical height when viewing spreadsheets/websites/content etc.
    • has HDMI, 2x USB-C, 2x USB-A, 3.5mm headphone jack built-in , which make it handy to travel with so you don't need to bring dongles/adapters - tech specs
    • good value and lenovo's often have a deal of some sorts - e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/lenovo-thinkpad-e16 .

A few things that you might not want to choose this is Lenovo E16:

    • the screen resolution at 1920x1200 is okay, but a bit low for a 16-inch screen size. However, if you are mainly work-from-home, you may want to consider investing in external monitors for better ergonomics.
    • the screen at 300 nits brightness is also okay, but some may want it brighter especially if you plan to be working outdoors in sunlight. Again, this might be a non-issue if you're working indoors and/or using external monitors when you're at home. If you have a portable monitor already, you may want to look up its brightness level to get a bit of context of the brightness. From my understanding, many portable monitors brightness are around the 300-400 nits.

I understand you were mainly considering between Dell and Lenovo, but you might want to also check out some of the HP devices such as the HP Pavilion Plus EVO 16-ab0000TU 16" for suitable features such as:

    • keyboard includes numpad for bookkeeping/accounting.
    • the screen is 16:10 aspect ratio so there is more vertical height when viewing spreadsheets/websites/content etc.
    • has HDMI, 2x USB-C, 2x USB-A, 3.5mm headphone jack built-in , which make it handy to travel with so you don't need to bring dongles/adapters - tech specs
    • higher resolution screen at 2560x1600
    • brighter screen at 400 nits

On the plus side, you may also find this HP laptop at your local JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, and Harvey Norman to physically check it out for a look and feel before you buy.

    • The joys of AI writing your responses, detailed, looks good, links to an engraving machine.

haha, no mate, I wrote that response/comment myself (without the help of AI).

Apologies for the engraving machine link. It was supposed to be this Lenovo ThinkPad E16.

I was looking at that engraving machine because a friend was considering getting one of them to craft a rabbit play pen. After finding out the cost of this machine, and effort/skill required, the rabbit is going to continue living its glorious life in a castle built with empty Amazon boxes. :D

    • Hello, Do you know anywhere can I see the fan noise, battery life, and whether the screen is anti-glare? Thanks

@ALE304, for data on the Lenovo, you may want to check out Notebook Check site - Lenovo E16.

Or are you looking for the HP model?

        • Thanks for your reply, I am looking for the HP model.

Just get a Dell XPS or similar, something light weight for easy carrying.

  • Which would you prefer, OP, size or lighter weight? Weight I'd get a refurb latitude and save a bunch of money (under $1k, comes with a 3 year warranty still from Dell). If you want a larger screen, get a big ol' HP.

Or if you want both, XPS 15 is perfect (even though it tops out your budget) - https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/xps-15-laptop/s… - benefit that it looks really impressive. But unless you do something beyond lightweight/web based bookkeeping and a bit of excel I can't imagine the hardware being necessary.

  • I would go for between 14-16 inche.

  • M3 MacBook Air 15" - $1919 here

  • I am not a MAC fan
