Extra Key Needed for 2010 Toyota RAV4

My daughter has just bought a 2010 RAV4 that came with only one key.

I've tried Googling to find somewhere that can create a new key and program it, but the search results are pretty useless.

Can anyone recommend anyone in the outer east of Melbourne who can make a new key for her?

    program it using Google

You need different software to program it

  • Sorry, poorly worded. I have edited the post. I tried searching using Google, we want to buy the key cut and programmed.

  • Should be a key cutting store in like every suburb…

    • Yes, and probably with big differences in prices and competence, which is why I was asking for recommendations.

And the nearest key cutting store to me is two suburbs away :-)

  • Your local Toyota dealer is a good starting point. Their quote will give you an indication of the complexity.

Sounds like the most expensive option, but I'll ask.

      • It's a quote directly from the company that manufacturered the car, use it as a price ceiling for what others will charge.

Got my 2012 corolla done at Wynns locksmiths in Preston who were good and if I remember correctly it was ~$185

  • Is it a smart key?

    • It has door lock/unlock buttons and an immobilser. Does that make it "smart"?

      • The smart key stays in your pocket and you just press the start button to start the car. These can be programmed with a cable off eBay.

        • Then it's not a smart key :-)

  • although am in Brissy, I spent a couple of hours researching this for my 2010 corolla and older Camry, since I wanted to see if I could DIY the code after buying a key off ebay and having it cut a local shop..the DIY steps to program it on youtube didnt work for me.

So the stealership wanted $300 for the spare key….but 15 mins of searching online for a "locksmith transponder car keys" showed me the shops in my area…and got transponder keys for $120

  • The nearest Toyota dealer quoted "about $500" and they don't do it in house, so it'll take a few days.

The nearest locksmith quoted $190 for a key with no buttons, or $390 for a key just like the original. Now that I come to write it down, it's not clear whether the $190 key had a transponder.

I've called two other (not so local) locksmiths, one can't do this key, the other said $190.

    Recommendations are still welcome.

  • Two more quotes, $250 and $200, so it looks like $190-200 is the best I'm going to get.

    • Some cars come with two remote keys, others are supplied with one remote and a spare that's a key blade with a transponder chip. I reckon you only need the non-remote type as your backup. If your daughter is good at not losing stuff you probably don't need a spare at all.

  • I DIYd a second remote for my 2010 corolla a few years back. Bought a blank key/remote with transponder off ebay and followed a youtube video to program the transponder and remote. Once I knew that was working I took it to get cut at a regular key cutting shop based on my original key.

    • Did you use techstream?

No it was a specific combo of opening and closing doors and standing on one leg as seen in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZa31GbEswU

Probably not the same video, just an example. Was a few years ago.

  • Try this company.
