I'm looking at trying out TPG with their $250 bonus credit and free upgrade to FTTP but will need a modem.
I figured Id be best off using their offer of $100 credit to supply my own modem so I'm not locked in at all.
Any suggestions on what a good option would be?
I do have a vx420-g2h not in use from when we had VDSL2 a few years ago but I'm not sure if it will work with NBN.

but will need a modem.
Why?
NBN supply the FTTP modem for free.
No, you both must be wrong, because TPG itself says so on its own web site promoting this offer. And I quote "High-speed compatible modem required". TPG wouldn't make a mistake like telling people they need a high speed modem, when they don't, they only need a router. Would it? If you can't rely on your ISP to tell you what to need to use their product, who can you rely on?
With FTTP, the modem is provided by NBN. You just need a router.
Any old one will do, maybe an old ADSL model, as long as it has a WAN port.
The vx420-g2h looks good.
