Wisdom Teeth Extract Australia Vs Singapore

We are planning a holiday trip in Singapore and thinking maybe do wisdom teeth extraction there as well, we dont use private health insurance in Australia anyway. Has anyone ever gone to Singapore for any dental? Do you think its cost effective there or just about the same?

Thanks

I heard you can save money on dental X-rays by bringing your own tooth pics.

    • That would be OPG, not basic x-rays.
If you go to a radiologist, they may bulk-bill it. But you need a referral from dentist or GP.

You can ask in Singapore, but its probably a lot cheaper in JB :)

      • Go in to a GP and tell them you have a sore jaw from an injury. Otherwise some won't give referral for dental purposes.

    • Dont throw toothpicks in the toilet…crabs can polevault.

  • So you're talking impacted wisdoms that require oral (day) surgery, or the ones that can be extracted in a dentist's chair?

Just go to Cronulla and you can get your teeth removed for free along with free boxing 🥊 lessons.

Why would you bother? In the chair it's maybe $200 a tooth. In the hospital, depending on complexity, maybe $2-4k.

Saving at least several hundred dollars is still good.

In Singapore? I am yet to see any evidence of that here.

Good luck removing the tooth right when you are travelling. Hope you don't feel like shit over there and on the return flight.

Hope you won't suffer pain and can't eat anything that's not fluid or paste like over there too.

I feel like I have to use this harsh tone to express my concern.

    • Get the procedure on the last day.

      • and suffer on plane :)

curious to see what low air pressure cabin could do to the wounds, please keep us updated :))))))

Yeah probably not a great idea. Can take up to a week to recover from swelling and pain. So unless you plan on having a crappy holiday, id just go the chair route in Oz and get it done cheaply. Plus not all extractions are straight forward. If they are impacted or have nerves running closeby the procedure can be complicated. At least go see a dental surgeon and get xrays first if you havent done so to ensure its a straight forward procedure.

    Sounds like fun.

What will you do on your next family holiday?

We're considering going with the kids to Bangladesh early next year for a family rhinoplasty vacation…
We got the idea after watching MAFS together.

  • I heard its more or less the same in terms of cost.

Post-op complications like dry socket can happen occasionally. If you do end up going back to a dentist who didnt do the surgery, they would usually charge some fees just to get it checked. So better to have the treatment done at home imo. Plus as others have said, the pain and discomfort is not worth it on a holiday.

    • Just holiday for a week after in Singapore, if dry socket happens go back to the dentist. I'm sure they are capable of taking care of it.

I used to work with someone who went to Thailand and another who went to Turkey for dental surgery. Both of them said the entire trip and the surgery cost similar to what just the surgery was going to cost in Australia.

They both also said that recovering in a nice hotel with staff waiting on you and at least pretending they care about your recovery was much better than being at home with a nagging family.

    • the entire trip and the surgery cost

Well it's comparing a procedure cost versus cost of flights + accommodation + better quality procedure.

Depends if you want a free holiday or not. I'd take the free holiday.

  • I had mine removed in Japan as my sister in law used to work at a dentist there.

  • I would not want to be on a flight for a good 2 weeks minimum after wisdom tooth extraction, more like a month.

Extractions aren't that expensive, not worth putting yourself through international travel with your head swollen up like the elephant man just to save a couple hundred.

Depending on if its medically necessary - You can get wisdom teeth removed for free through the public health system. I was a low priority where they weren't causing me pain but the dentist wanted to take them out as they hadn't come through the gums fully so food was getting caught.
I waited on the list for about 2 years, had day surgery, all 4 out, and $0.

Do you have a health care card?

      • Medicare card? Yes

        • Health care card is different, this is a concession card given to people on welfare benefits for reduced cost of meds and other services.

        • No not Medicare card, but a paper bifold card that's either green or blue with a purple banner strip at the top (or for the ACT an ACT Services Access Card). Or assuming you were undertaking studies at the time, Youth Allowance or Austudy.

Otherwise this would a program that dentists and OMFS/oral surgeons aren't aware of and it would be extremely beneficial to spread the word.

        • Ah in that case - no I don't have any health care card or concession card.

    • Really? How does one get free dental in Australia?? I thought it was 100% private and you had to have private health to try and cover the expenses.

Done through a hospital. If it was through a dentist it wouldn't be covered.

        • Damn, didn't know! I did full general anesthetic for 3 of mine to be removed. They were in funky positions and had to but cut up into small pieces to get out. I vaguely remember hospital cover covered some of it but the anesthetist was an out of pocket expense.

      • I basically got to the point where I met a dental surgeon, he said "its $X,000 to do this privately" and asked "I have heard i can get this done publicly" at which point he put me on the wait list!

I don't think its well broadcast and honestly only knew because a friend told me.

      • How does one get free dental in Australia??

Having rich parents is the best way. The answer to most of life's problems in Australia are solved by having rich parents actually. Makes you wonder if every parent in Australia was rich would we be living in a utopia?

      • Become a dentist then you can do your own teeth.

This isn't true unless you are on Medicare or have a serious face injury.

Cheaper at Thailand, Vietnam or Philippines. Just bring your Morphine / Endone at the plane.

When I got mine out (all 4 at once) my lower jaw swelling made me look like Quagmire, no feeling in tongue or lips and I couldn't even have liquids without drooling.
Being surrounded by Asian food would have been salt in the wound.
I don't think you'll be saving money either. Get it done here and buy some Up&Go to drink.

My advice : Oh boy, it is really is not cheap doing dental surgery in Singapore . Why not google dentists in JB , many of them are Australian trained ? After all what you know where and who are they and how much will roughly cost to you then make up your decision. If you won’t mind the trouble make the same enquiry with Singapore side just to ease your feeling. The exchange rate of Australian dollars to Malaysia ringgit is a blessing.

JB does dental procedures nowadays?! Do they price-match?

        • Ask for mujeeb.

          • @watwatwat: May be wait until your birthday month and use perks voucher.

OMG you don't want to be travelling home after that type of surgery.
No one can prepare you for the pain that follows, even with the pain meds they give you.
I'd rather give birth again then ever go through that again.

I had all 4 out in the chair at once, one was impacted. All over within an hour.
I do have AHM extras, but even without that it would have cost me $1460 all up.

    Good luck with it all!

  • I don't think it'll be cheaper, our currency is on parity. But if you are doing it, do it at least a few days before returning to OZ so it doesn't ruin your holiday and allow for some of the swelling to subside before you hop on the plane.

  • just got mine out last month (all 4) in the chair - was not fun to say the least - 3.5k (NSW) i had no insurance - and also had a check up the following day followed by the stitches removed at the 2 week mark.

wasn't fun the first few days - and you would want to know your hotel/resturants near by that could make you broth/soup etc.
Wife said i wasn't plesant to be around ha.

  • Bargain cowboy, wisdom teeth extraction is not a problem for those trained dentists in JB. Easy job. Modern medicine and overseas trained skills offer patients safe treatment.

  • Singapore is not known as a dental holiday destination for good reason… have you seen the prices and currency exchange rates lately? Good way to ruin your holiday!
