Searching for a Chess Set

I want to teach my 10 year old daughter to play chess, so I am looking to by a reasonably priced/reasonable quality chess set.

Most of the sets I've found so far are really small and magnetic, and look a bit cheap, while others are crazy prices. Just looking for a set that is a reasonable size to sit on a coffee table, don't mind if the board folds to store the pieces.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Honestly, you'll find a set quick enough at op shops/secondhand stores. I collect fancier sets for my kid who plays and the amount of rarer made sets people just toss out is stupid crazy.

Also, local library will generally have sets to borrow.

I know where to get a professional style with quad weighted pieces for under $60 including shipping.

      well don't tell us

    • Where?

Whatever you do, don’t get one from the US vs UK tournament - they are missing a queen and two towers

      Edgy

    • does it come with extra bishops in lieu?

    • For lists, you need to add a

      • space
      • *For asterisk, you don't

That's an interesting choice of formatting, if it was intentional

asterisk list are aesthetically inferior to bullet point lists

            (Good bolding by the way)

    • That looks awesome, and a great price. Thanks.

Temu is doing a 29 x 29cm set for $12.74 (have to learn how to edit links)

unless it is an inherent trait.

    • In general it's just a matter of removing the question mark and everything beyond it.

        How does one edit these?

Wow, bit more involved than expected

          • Visit the link
          • Click through temu BS
          • Once you have a product page, find the url Param goods_id=601099536834989
          • Google the goods id (just the number) + temu
          • Find a normal product URL
          • Strip ? And anything after
          • You'll end up with something like this

          https://www.temu.com/au/classic-vintage-standard-folding-wooden-chess-set-foldable-games-board-crafted-carved-g-601099536834989.html

There's probably an easier way. If you're using web, don't use share. If you're using the app, perhaps an incognito window + steps above.

@ihfree: I don’t understand why taking off my clothes helps this situation, but if you say so…

@joka: You're headed in the right direction but the next steps are a bit more difficult. Be careful with the ceiling fan and watch out if you have a narrow toaster.

        • If you don't have an affiliate Temu account then I wouldn't worry too much, you aren't breaking any rules. Though that share link might have someone else's Temu affiliate code in it if you got one caught in your cookies, so that may break the rules here.

Sometimes the stuff after the question mark is useful too, if it highlights a certain part of the page or preselects certain options you want to show someone.

          • @AustriaBargain: The issue is more that comments are unpublished with reason

Affiliate / Referral / Spam links in comments are not allowed

            • @ihfree: If they don't even have an affiliate account with Temu then the share link won't break any of those rules. If they clicked a Temu affiliate link yesterday and that is still in their cookies, then that share link may contain those affiliate credentials still. I didn't even know Temu had an affiliate program but I guess it make sense that they do.

  • I went with this one https://www.wheelsandmotion.com.au/best-chess-set-ever-xl~27…

Big tournament style chess sets will set her up to become Polgar 💪🏼

  • Last time I looked Kmart had a chess, checkers and maybe another game in a set for less than $20.

A question for those who know these things.

One of the comments for that set states -

My set did come with the flaw that the rank and file indicators (the A-H & 1-8) have been burned into the board in reverse, so playing white you are seeing the squares run H-A etc

I can find both orientations on different boards for sale ie white 'a' is aligned with black 'a' whilst on others the white 'a' is aligned with the black 'h' (the same difference also is shown for the 1-8).

Does anyone know which is the correct method? (if there is in fact one correct way).

  • $10 for Wooden Chess and Draughts Game. What more does a beginner need?

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/wooden-chess-and-draughts-g…

  • I used to work near a shop called Chess World https://www.chessworld.com.au/ but both they and I seem to have moved.
I'm also guessing that's not the price range you're looking for.

    Try the local pawn shop.

    • those still exist?

    • +2

I see what you did there.

  • Bunnings lists this set https://www.bunnings.com.au/giant-size-plastic-outdoor-chess… but it probably won't work for you unless your coffee table is really large.

    • +1

This should be how grandmasters have to play, and oil up all the pieces so they are hard to hold.

  • Just get this $7 set at target until you know if she's actually interested in chess: https://www.target.com.au/p/chess-checkers/61524446

My eldest learnt Chess through this - https://storytimechess.com.au/. She was a bit younger though so the story aspect of it helped her learn the moves, a 10yo might not be as interested in that portion

  • I think my son has a good one he's not using any more - can ask him?

  • I recommend a decent plastic tournament set. The default wooden sets are a poor cut and easy to knock over. Start with something like this: https://www.chessworld.com.au/tournament-chess-set-95mm-sing…

I play chess a lot. I have a set like this and a very good wooden set used for social play with friends but it's the plastic set that gets the most use.
