I've been eyeing a 9-day tour for a few weeks now. Originally it was priced at $1010.00. Then it dropped to $850 and now it was $638. So good savings in the end :D

Yeah - I've heard some bad stories about them. But I've heard some good ones too.
Just that I'm travelling solo and thought it would be a good to travel with people.
I'm only doing a short trip with them (just over a week) so hopefully it should be alright :)
Nothing against your post.
But I went on a Tucan Tour a few years ago to South America and it was such a terrible experience that I eventually left the tour to travel on my own.
For optional excursions, they charge more than what you would pay if you booked it yourself. Even though they get it for a cheaper rate than individual bookings.
At the time, I had a student card and they refused to give me the student discount for the Inca Trail. Only after I threatened them with reporting the case to the Peruvian Tourism Board, they agreed to pay me the difference.
They made us camp in a Caravan park 7km outside of the City in Salto Argentina, even though the cost of a hotel was comparable to the cost of the Caravan Park.
They like to organise group meals out which I don't have a problem with, but suggesting us to go to a Pizza restaurant when we are in Peru was a bit disappointing.
The service provided by the Crew was also very unprofessional in some circumstances.
Final straw was when I got told by the Bus Driver : "Hey mate, you do as I say, this is NOT a democracy".
After that, I left the tour half way through and requested a partial refund, but they refused to provide it, even after various long emails, letters, and threats of legal action.
In summary, I would NOT recommend anyone to travel with them on a group tour again. From my own experiences, there are better Tour Group operators out there such as Contiki and Top Deck.
