  • Very good deal! Currently $359 at Umart and Computer Alliance.

Good review on the product here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdHtbPsr_7k&t=651s

Purchase made to upgrade from my 970 EVO Plus 1TB

  • Is it alright without DRAM?

    • you dont need dram unless you are using database servers, data analytics, and virtualization environments

This SSD feels like an update Samsung had to introduce to compete with WD SN580 and SN770. 970 Evo Plus, being PCIe gen 3 x4 despite having DRAM, is losing its appeal. Samsung did put in a new gen controller on 990 Evo so it does perform quite well in gaming related benchmarks. However, in the traditional type of tests (max sequential read / write), Samsung held this SSD back. I suspect that was intentional, to give 980 Pro some breathing space in terms of specs written on the packaging box.

Do note that specs wise, it is technically below PS5's recommended read speed. Also, it is DRAMless (unlike 970 Evo Plus). Introducing this SSD at this time is a smart move from Samsung (able to price it higher). Looks like both WD and Samsung did plan ahead to take advantage of the SSD price increase.

looks like the + votes are not actually buying though

Decent, but not the best, I paid $232.20 for the 990Pro directly through Samsung end of last year.

Was also down to 173 from the USA on Amazon around that time

      • That's true, that was like 2 weeks after I got mine, but mine came with their heatsink.

  • hwhat are they gonna call the next one

  • Slow speeds for Gen 5, certainly more of a games drive than a boot drive.

  • A PCIe 5.0 drive that is slower than PCIe 4.0 drives? Wow

Besides not many bifurcation AICs nor motherboards that one can take advantage of the PCIe 5 x2 nature of this drive.

    • It's likely due to Samsung using a cut down version of the their latest gen controller. Instead of disabling PCIe gen 5 support in firmware, Samsung left it there, but due to the NAND type used (133L), it is incapable of taking advantage of PCIe gen 5 x4.

So, a marketing spin to advertise PCIe gen 5 x2 support to hide the fact the NAND used is not PCIe gen 5 x4 grade. Now, we start dreaming about PCIe gen 5 bifurcation in x2 x2 mode in the future using a PCIe gen 5 x4 PCIe add on card (even though it is kinda silly because the choice of PCIe gen 5 x2 SSDs is likely going to remain limited).

  • For $7 more you can get the 990 Pro.

  • I love how this is Gen 5 yet it can barely cross over Gen 4 max speeds.

    Classic marketing intern at work!

My AORUS 7300 obliterates this thing.

  • I bought the Samsung 990 Pro 2tb for $207 with the SSAVETHREE or something code that Samsung had earlier this week.

  • Not sure whether to post this as a new deal since I'm not a regular and it's not much better, but further reduction means it's now $219.96. Also the 5% for 2 applies meaning you can get 2 for $417.92. (Maybe you can also do the add low value item with the same promotion trick, didn't look in to that.)

Personally even at the lower price or the 2x price, IMO you're better off getting something else e.g. one of MAP1602+YMTC 232L. This doesn't even have DRAM. And the MAP1602+YMTC232L should perform the same or better in virtually anything, and it's probably a lower price. (The Fikwot FN955 2TB is currently $159.99 or you could wait for the Verbatim). But I know some people don't trust those. Only situation I can imagine where this might be better is if you have a 1 or 2 lane PCIe 5.0 slot you want to use with it but that must be very rare.
