Samsung Trade up Rip off Value

Hi, has anyone else received a value lower value expected in the Samsung trade-up promotion?

I sent back a Samsung S22 Ultra, in perfect condition, no scratches or damage to trade up for the s24 ultra. I used the Trade-Up because it presented a good deal at the time and I didn't want to deal with Facebook marketplace.

We are adjusting the credit by charging you a Mis-Grading Device Fee of $485. This amount is the difference between the trade-in credit you received (which is the Security Charge), and the market value of the original device based on its condition. The Mis-Grading Device Fee will be deducted from the Security Charge, so you will receive a credit of $40 for your original device.

So basically I'm getting $40 for a Samsung s22 Ultra as credit. I've asked for photos and their assessment of this value. Not sure if I will get anywhere, has anyone got any advice on how to proceed?

  • I'm getting $40 for a samsung s22 Ultra as credit.

Ouch. There's tons of complaints about how Asurion carries out trade-ins.

Apple offered me $100 on my M1 macbook pro in January.

      • Not much but it's terrible bad!

            @Dealmon: 8gb ram not enough.

          • @Dealmon: 🤣

          • @Dealmon: You keep defending this but it's a $2000 laptop which Apple claim "8GB is fine!" for and they actually do give kind of ok trade in on iphones.

            $100 on an M1 is a joke.

Just showing there are other companies just as bad. ;)

      • All trade-in programs offer poor value vs selling privately, because it's easy and saves you the trouble of doing it yourself. EBGames would literally offer <$5 credit on year-old sport games, which is like 95% depreciation. OP should have gotten a quote, or at least a ballpark figure, before sending in and getting burned.

    • Microsoft game for $400 for a surface pro 3 with a dodgy touchscreen without needing the powersupply or keyboard…

Yeah, we regularly have threads on here about how terrible the Samsung Trade in program is.
    Also their warranty support.
    Also their customer service.
Also their software being full of bloatware.

Yet at the same time, whenever a deal for Samsung soundbars turns up (seems to be at least once a month) people cream themselves in the rush to buy them.

It's one of OzBargain's more amusing dichotomies.

I have taken a HEAP of footage and photos of my phone's before mailing them in. I saw someone else post they had to use Samsung to get full value by complaining to them directly.

Does anyone please know the complaint process to streamline it? I'm already expecting it and have such ample evidence they don't have a chance…..

(They also dropped my trade in value 15 dollars per phone after me delaying my purchase by 8 hours, just bad timing I guess)

  • I'm looking for a Samsung alternative for my next phone as I bought my S20 FE directly from them and they told me screen burn wasn't a defect but was considered to be user damage. Yeah, nah.

Only other flagship is the xperia with Microsd card slot but what would be something with battery, decent chipset, camera and large storage space (sd card seems obsolete now in most manufacturers sadly)

The trade ins are always a rip off as they build profit margins into the trade program and it'll likely be resold with no checks as a 'refurb'. by a third party.

    • Have traded Pixel Pro 6 > 7 Pro > 8 Pro for less than $300 out layed each time …

the only time it seems worthwhile to trade in with Samsung is when they have the "bonus" offers. Last year i traded in a Samsung J1 Ace, and got $205 as a trade in

    • This is the way. Gaming the system instead of being lazy.

    • I've got bonus offers - but it's still not cheap enough..
It's only a $250 trade in bonus, you need more off than that. People who ordeed at launch basically got $500 off.

So you can be damned sure, I want the money for the phone I sent em.

Just ask for the phone back and cancel the purchase

They are using the well trodden used car trade in playbook.

    • They apparently outright lie

I'm waiting for someone to reply to me here, with the correct Samsung information about the best way to escalate as I'm expecting them to screw me

    Nothing new
    Asurion Bunch of bastard

  • Hi. Exactly same thing happened to me today. My S22 ultra in perfect (just like new) condition and they offered me $40. No photos or specific information shared. That is why I searched if anyone else encountered same issue. It is ridiculous.

    • So what is the solution? Did you take pics beforehand?

  • I'll pay you $80 for it

  • Hey @Queue2Queue I realised my earlier reply was just me worrying about me facing the same problems (dunno yet!)

Please see this post, hopefully it helps you?

I'm hoping to not suffer the same issue, $40 on an S22 in good condition is ridiculous, at bare min it's a $250 phone.

I had this problem, albeit with a much cheaper phone. I just asked them for evidence of any damage or reason and they rolled over and paid the amount quoted. They're obviously incredibly dodgy though. Wouldn't surprise me if there was some KPI that was affecting graders' assessment.

    • How did you contact them?

  • Part of me hates dealing with feeBay but seems like the Asurion risk is worse than having to pay 13% in fees and gamble at the final sale price. I decided to sell my Fold 5 on feeBay and got a lower than expected price but it was market value as i could see others selling for a similar price.

I did trade in my ancient Gear S3 watch for $5 and bloody Asurion are so slow in processing that they threatened to take my full deposit despite the device being delivered by AusPost to them well and truly within timeframes. Fortunately the trade in bonus was worth it

  • I got $140 & $185 from samsung for trading in a pixel 6 & pixel 6 pro on an s24 ultra. On top of that there was a $100 bonus for trading in. There was no issues with my grading so got the full amount

  • I think I got lucky. I traded in my s21 and got the full $290 that was quoted. The sides and back of the phone were significantly etched due to the crappy official Samsung case that was "protecting" it. The hard plastic back of the case was also really etched. No idea why it happened, never had this with this type of case before. The bumper section of the case was a bit loose so assume grit sneaked past the lip and ended up grinding between the case and phone. Screen was immaculate though and no other defects.

  • Which portal shows if Asurion are going for the rip off?

The Samsung order portal? I have no idea.

I see they charged me money at time of order, no problem, I assume they refund?

They've charged me another single dollar today, when I see they collected the goods from auspost. Assuming it's at least several days at this point?

  • Well I haven't got the refund yet but I've been cleared for full value on both trade ins, even if they did drop $15 8 hours after hesitating ordering.

So I guess not always bad - I made sure I printed lots of info for them, supplied charged phones and wiped.

  • Last time was an S10 512 trade in for S22U and no issue.

This time have same issue as others with the S22U to S24U. My wife said its ok but I am not letting them off that easy. Wrote a feed back in the portal and see what they say.

Next time I will take others advise and generate a low trade in value then sell the phone at CEX.

  • This just happened to me. Sent a working s21 ultra, only minor scratches in corner, Offer - $350, got refunded $10. I am beyond angry.

They said i had a crack and image ghosting??? Blatantly lying about damage.

    • I got full refund on both mine but I took a boatload of pics and video and mentioned the pics in my letter.

I also made sure devices were wiped, updated, spotless and well wrapped before sending.

Still this sucks for people :(

      • How did you manage to escalate this?
