    Absolute garbage of a phone,
Manufactured e-waste is what the pixel series is.
I'm typing this comment from this exact same phone and it's like I'm holding hot baked potato fresh out of the oven.
I fully expect this thing to die in a couple of years from all the overheating.

    • +7

They should abandon Samsung and adopt TSMC's process.

    • Thanks for saving me from making a mistake👍

Your research only extends to the first comment on a bargain website?

        • -3

It raised a red flag and subsequent research shows the initial comment is common with many owners. I wonder why I have to justify my comment to somebody I don't know and care about.

            @LookHere: Username checks out.

@LookHere: All phones overheat when used HARD. Especially playing intensive games.

            Typical usage is fine.

            • @Korban Dallas: Typical usage is NOT fine with the pixel series,
I've had the 1XL, the 6 Pro and now this,
              All have been the same.

Using WhatsApp or Chrome yields the same result as playing COD on these things.

          • +5

            @LookHere: If you Google…

<Insert phone model here> overheating issue

Then you will just get confirmation bias hits. Have fun.

            • @MS Paint: My man, you have probably not owned a pixel,
In this case it's more of a <where there's smoke there's fire>, rather than confirmation bias

      • +7

8 pro is a beast but i got that sweet sweet optus deal

    • +6

I have the 7 pro and love it, no overheating issues for me

      • Same, I've got the 512/12GB 7 Pro and no issues for the last 1.5 years

      • same here. great so far. what do you use to protect the curved screen though? Its a pain, i am a tempered glass user but i havent found a good quality tempered glass that's curved. So I've settled for a regular screen protector.

        • +1

I use this, it's done a great job and very easy to install, just watch the video before you do.

      That's pretty extreme.
I would say my 8 pro often feels slower than the 6 pro somehow though

But the 6 pro overheated constantly and this only.does.if I leave it in the sun .

    • Have you tried returning it? It must have come with at least a 12 month warranty from the retailer. And then there might be additional protection under Australian consumer law.

Overheating is a fire safety issue and if it's as bad as you say then it's irresponsible not to get it fixed. How do you know it won't overhead to such an extent that it causes a fire?

      • This was part of a whole bunch of pre-order and trade in promotions and bonus gift cards from JB

Not sure how returns work these special cases.

Also when it comes to Android and software feature, what else comes even closer? Asus? Vivo? Samsung and their disgusting OneUI?

    • I dont know how people can justify spending 1299 for 128GB crap of a phone when one can buy the 256GB S24 Ultra for 150 bux more.
Google should just ditch thier own chip and start using Qualcomm. Samsung is pretty much able to do the same AI as Google without any customised chip.

      • I'm deciding on a Pixel v Galaxy (or other Android) and perhaps you can help me out here.

What makes you say it's a crap of a phone when the reviews are resoundingly positive?

On price, the Pixel 8 Pro 256GB is 1387 at Officeworks whereas the Ultra S24 256GB seems to be 2387. It's an $1000 difference - is it really worth it for someone who's not a high-intensity user/gamer? My main consideration is the camera. Is the S24 camera better, and by a factor of an extra $1000 which is an extra 72%? Am I missing something?

        • The S24 was 1450 on deal yesterday, you need a samsung edu store and trade in tho. The pixels are notorious in losing battery life when 5G is enabled. The chipset is slower than samsung, the battery life is lower and overall I feel S24U is a better device. Both are getting long term updates albeit Samsung has crapware loaded on it. For me at the end of the day S24 wins as I use dual sims so standby should be way better.

@[Deactivated]: Thanks for the extra info.

I don't have an .edu email account or a trade-in that's likely to be useful (just an old Motorola with a cracked screen). That being the case, I'll need to take whatever prices are available on the open market.

I hope you take this the right way, but perhaps in future you could clarify your assumptions/parameters about the education account and the trade-in, given that it makes a $1000 difference. Your original post is written as if I can just grab an S24 Ultra 256GB off the shelf at Officeworks or JB for about $1000 cheaper than is actually the case.

            • @Hitchens: Well its called OZB and people here tend to go an extra mile to save a $. Even getting a mobile plan sub and then unsubscribing it. YMMV. I told what I felt and you dont have to take it literally. You are the best person to make your own decision at the end of the day.

Also for edu account, I think even if you have a relative with school email, you are set. I need to ask my sister to use her kids email to get one if I wanted to. Also the trade in is strictly not necessary. More info here. Rest is upto you.

              • @[Deactivated]: Thanks,

I accept that it's called OzBargain for a reason. And to use your example, if I needed to take out a plan to save a few dollars on a phone then I'd do it. Taking out a plan and cancelling it is an option available to everybody here. However, being a student or even having a family member who's a student is not something that's a viable option for everybody. Similarly, having an acceptable trade-in isn't necessarily an assumed fact for everybody.

So I'm not at all saying you're factually incorrect with your post. I'm just saying that it's be much more helpful if you set out the parameters to getting such a good price on an Ultra S24, like you did in this follow-up post. But initially you had written about this matter as if it's silly to get a Pixel 8 when someone can get an Ultra S24 for only marginally more, under a normal and ongoing set of conditions. But it's not a like-for-like comparison in this case.

Thanks for the extra clarity about the student discount and the trade-in value.

                • +1

@Hitchens: Dude, I think you are new to this website. This is how people communicate here. Or atleast most of them.

                  • @[Deactivated]: I'll make this my last post on this topic and let you have the last word if you want it.

If I can reflect your own words back at you, the first post goes "I dont know how people can justify spending 1299 for 128GB crap of a phone when one can buy the 256GB S24 Ultra for 150 bux more". It's a broad statement about relative value between competing options. It reads as if someone's an idiot for not taking up the Ultra S24. When in reality, many people are ruled out because of not having an @edu.au email address and/or not having a trade-in phone to attain the type of price you're talking about. This is not a like-for-like comparison.

I think it's debatable whether it's normal for other posters to present info like this, as you claim. Certainly in an OP deal, someone couldn't list an Ultra S24 for $1450 without being edited for the necessary context/specifics of how that price is achieved.

Anyway, have a good day, fellow OzBargainer.

                    • @Hitchens: Feel free to buy this phone my friend. I didnt mean to say anybody is an idiot. If I did, sorry about that. Enjoy!

          • @[Deactivated]: Your not comparing apple's

        • Oh boy, well the answer to this is quite difficult, which highlights the disadvantage of Android vs Apple.
When it comes to Apple there's is always one answer and that's the latest iPhone.

I guess if price is a concern then get a regular pixel 8 and put up with the crapp hardwar cause the software and camera experience is unmatched. then trade it in every couple of years with JB ($500 - $600 off) until they get gud.

Or consider Zenfone 10 and put up with the minor software and camera shortcomings

      • +1

Samsung has broken my trust too many times. I got the S22 and the battery life was laughably bad. Literally dead by midday. Their advice was to turn off every premium feature… I then had to fight tooth and nail for them to accept a return.

The software on the pixel is also better in my experience. I'm perplexed by Samsung selling the circle to search feature when Google Lens has been baked into pixel for years…

Having said all that, my pixel 7 Pro pisses me off a lot of the time. It's the best of a bad bunch I've managed to find.

  • +1

Bit late to the party JB. Wouldn't even price match.

    No plus vote from me.

Find the Pixel okay but seem a little disappointed with the camera. Guess I need to play with it a bit more.

Also how the fudge do you enable the theme they advertise. Spent 15 mins googling and still couldn't work it out.

    • +3

the telephoto is amazing. ive compared it directly with a $2000 iphone and it shits on it

    • +2

You need to have the same wallpaper as the ones advertised. They're found under Minerals in the wallpaper setting. You should be able to choose the theme from there.

  • +2

Damn no deals on the 256GB

    • Yep. Glaring difference between 128GB sale price and 256 non sale price

      • +1

256gb on sale as well for $1399.

        • $1387.00 at officework now

        • It wasn't yesterday when I posted but thanks for the update, I'll pick one up today.

  • I have the 6A. It's a great phone, no doubt about that. But the battery life could have been better.

  • +2

Wild that the sale price for this phone that's a "good deal" is the RRP of last year's model. Don't know where the extra money is going on this one (besides, "to Google").

  • Is this a good deal coming from the king the S10+? I know I'd be losing out on a headphone jack an the ability to put in an micro SD card, but the battery on my S10+ is crapping itself. Should I wait for a lower price? Or should I just go for the regular Pixel 8?

  • +1

Just noticed they are offering an extra $400 off via trade-in until the 24th on the JB website. Might make this deal worth it?

    • +1

Ya I might jump. Trading in my pixel 7.

  • I am super happy with my Pixel Pro 6.
    I really don't need the 8.
    I don't need it.
