I can confirm both discs work in Australia. 4k being region free by default, the Blu-ray is published by universal which is generally without region locking, but I have tested both discs on my player.

Important considering this Oscar-nominated release starring Australian actress Cate Blanchett filmed in 4k with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack about the pursuit of musical perfection featuring several scenes with shadows and high contrast visuals was, of course released locally on a DVD for our broadly uncaring, anti-intellectual market 🤗

That aside, this 4k disc looks and sounds great

Beautifully photographed movie warranting a 4K watch. Pity the movie is self-consciously pretentious with unredeemable characters.

Might be a good watch for those that are having trouble sleeping.

"pretentious" is the favourite word of people who seem to be convinced art is "bad" or "too smart" for them. Don't be that guy.

      • I don't think I was being that guy. I cannot think of an adjective that applies more closely to this movie than pretentious. It's about an extremely self-obsessed conductor, ably portrayed by Cate Blanchett, in the high society cultural scene patronised by the ultra-rich. I felt the movie was intended to be about the rigours of maintaining artistic excellence at the top of one's game, a la Whiplash. Instead, the message I understood was 'fake it till you make it' - Linda Tarr changed her name and working-class background to become feted conductrix Lydia Tár, replete with acute accent. This fools the elites into thinking she's some master, when she's just a vain and temperamental conductor. Having played in plenty of orchestras and concert bands, I understand the responsibilities of a conductor - they're nowhere near as difficult or demanding as this movie is desperately trying to portray, so it ultimately fails. I found these themes to be extremely pretentious, superficial and yet another example of the way we idolise the wealthy in society as if they're superior to us, and they are not.

  • It’s been on my watch list for ages and this is the cheapest I’ve ever seen it. Thinking it’s still just a bit much for a blind buy though..

It’s not the same, but if you liked Whiplash, reckon you’d like this. Blanchett is phenomenal in this.
