@cyruslol: Yeah, well, I've never been with two girls at the same time before. But you can bet, when that day comes, I'll make it work.

Went into the movie not expecting much, actually one of ny most rewatched movies of all time. Nothing will ever beat the 1999 cinematic masterpiece "The Mummy" starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz though.

    • +8

"The Kingsmen" was another of those 'this is better than it has a right to be'. The connecting factor is its not part of some franchise, or indeed some known IP. They also had no 'message' they were trying to push - they were just trying to be entertaining.

      • Agreed , didn’t expect much, actually watched it start to finish a few times now.

      • Im not sure what you mean about 'message' what movies push a message?

        • -2

Sometimes they have a female lead or something, which can clearly only be done to be cruel to us men who didn't get a movie with a guy in the lead, easily making us the biggest victims on earth.

        • +3

If you go go to IMDB and look for movies that have a bunch of ratings/votes for both a 10 and a 1, then that’s a pretty good indicator that there is a message in the movie that viewers on either side of the fence disagree on with a passion.

          • @Gravy: The mean average is a good enough rating to decide whether to watch something, I don't bother usually if it's under 6.5 or something on IMDb.

            • +1

@G-rig: Yeah… I agree. However some movie ratings tend to be manipulated if they have a heavy political/social message that one side agrees/disagrees with… it can work both ways though. It becomes more of a fight as to which side of the fence can gather up enough voters and the end result is not always a fair average rating.

              • @Gravy: Wouldn't worry about it, most people can decide themselves if they want to watch a movie or not. It's pretty safe to ignore the lowest score in any survey as it's shows people are disgruntled etc.

                • @G-rig: Yeah but what I am saying is if you go purely by average score, I suspect it can be gamed so it's always good to check the spread.

                  • @Gravy: Does it really matter?
                    Just don't watch it.

                    • @G-rig: It matters to me, because like yourself, I also use IMDB viewer rating when deciding whether a movie is worth a watch. If the score has been gamed (either upwards or downwards) then I might miss out on a movie that was worth watching, or vice versa, watch something that had an artificially inflated score and wasn't really worth watching.

                      • @Gravy: ¯\(ツ)/¯

        • +1

A large chunk of movies (and TV shows) being spit out of Hollywood over the past 15-20 years usually contain some political, social or cultural messaging or themes and push diverse casting where it makes no sense. I think this is the reason why so many people have stopped watching Hollywood films and their revenue has declined so drastically.

          • @gyrex: The box office sales will dictate how popular a film is. Worth noting not as many people go to the movies anymore with streaming so readily available, and are happy to wait until it's on the Streaming services.

Pretty sure everyone can make up their own mind whether or not to watch something, plenty of reviews around. Not everything has to be so PC, just watch it or don't, those are the the options 😂.

    • +1

How is it a cinematic masterpiece? Not trolling

      • +7

        It's not really a masterpiece.

It's based on an incredible book called "All you need is kill" by a Japanese chap

        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_You_Need_Is_Kill

The book is a bit more nuanced with twists and turns and explains the live-die-repeat in depth.

The ending is arguably better in the book too.

It's still a great movie, but the book is a masterpiece IMO.

        • I wish they used the book ending, but they had to go full hollywood with it instead

    • -1

My all time favourite movie is The Mummy (1999) but ill never forgive Tom Cruise for what they did to The Mummy (2017) so for that reason its a hard pass

      • Talking of things that you can't forgive Tom Cruise for….. he ruined the Jack Reacher books for me…. Tom just can't pull off a 6'6" 250 lbs man. Alan Ritchson however Dayum!!! Now he suits the character.

        • Guess he's mostly brains not brute force, however haven't read the books. The Amazon series is great. Les Norton would make a better JR than Tom Cruise lol.

    • +9

Matrix in 1999,that was one movie I had no idea about, was blown away.

      • +5

Same, never even saw a trailer, walked in the after after release, one of the most enjoyable and mind-blowing experiences in a cinema. Although Starship Troopers is the movie I laughed the most in. At the time seems I was the only person there that got it was a parody.

        • +2

I like how this thread keeps going…
Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993) is my personal fav.

        • +1

Starship troopers still holds up, in themes, editing, music, cheese, etc, but also a lot of the CGI looks better than movies today.

      • 100% agree. When the DVD came out, the “more guns / lobby” scene was watched many many times with my fairly new 5.1 sound system.

  • +15

love me some emily blunt <3

    • +1

A Quiet Place is awesome if you've not seen

    • I see you like that tough personality with some rough talks from the commander, discipline you all over

  • +8

    Great movie.

I would love a sequel or prequel

    • +4

Agreed.. Long overdue. Great movie, I've lost count how many times I've seen it.

I've read plenty of reports and Emily has been quoted as saying she's very much up for a sequel.

      • +6

Prequel for Emily's story of having the power would be super easy, they already half told the story just need to flesh it out .. and it's Emily, would be awesome

    • +3

There’s been talk of a possible sequel at various times. Last I heard it wasn’t completely off the table, but that was a year or two back. Could always consider reading the book (All You Need Is Kill), which iirc is very substantially different from the film.

  • +11

Will have to watch this one again.
Oblivion and War of the Worlds were also cool

  • +5

Incredible film same goes for Oblivion

    • +2

Yeah, Oblivion was also epic. I’d forgotten all about it till I re-watched it on a flight recently. Awesome.

  • -4

I assume that everyone here has read the novel that the movie is based on?

    • +2

Didn't love the book but loved the movie!

    • +1

Of course, I read all the Tin Tin books.

  • +8

Really enjoyed this movie. Time loop movies and episodes of TV as they are fun when done well.

    • +6

12 Monkeys "the tv series" is pretty good how ever it tends to lose the plot near the end !

      https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3148266/

    • Blood Punch was a pretty interesting less-known time loop film.

    • Same! See You Yesterday was also surprisingly great too.

  • +10

One of my favourites, and I'm NOT a Cruise fan!

  • +6

This and interstellar, 2 great movies have lots of meaning.

    • What meaning does Edge of Tomorrow have?

      • +18

Remember to quick save more often.

      • +7

It means keep pushing your edging to tomorrow. The movie is a metaphor for no fap.

      • +1

        Don't take life for granite

Thanks OP. Also picked up a BluRay copy of the remastered Director's Cut version of Robocop for 9% off both.

  • JB has buy 2 get 1 free, waiting for the buy 1 get 1 free + 20% off.
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/collections/movies-b2g1f?page=1&hi…
Edge of Tomorrow may come back in stock at JB

    • How does that help for a movie not sold on 4K physical media in Australia?

      • Edge of Tomorrow is not sold in Australia anymore? I got it at JB during the last sale.
I thought that only Disney 4Ks were no longer available in Oz.

        • +1

          It’s never had a 4K release here, Blu-Ray only.

          • +1

@Randolph Duke: Ok, I must have got it from the UK then

          • @Randolph Duke: So 1080p or 2160p I think the latter is still quite watchable.

            • +1

@G-rig: Big jump from DVD to Blu-ray, not so much from Blu-ray to 4K.
The noticeable difference is the HDR and DV and the 7.1 atmos.
But you would need the right setup for that.

              • +1

@congo: Yeah 4k true hd and Atmos goes ok alright.
And the setup is good enough, CCwGTV -Samsung q950a-Eko 4k-

            • @G-rig:

So 1080p or 2160p I think the latter is still quite watchable.

              2160p is 4K. Bluray is 1080p.

  • Didn’t this release with the name Live, Die, Repeat?

    • +1

Yes, in some countries. Here it was Edge of Tomorrow.

      • When I watched it it was live die repeat.
I guess some streaming services don’t bother changing the title 😂

      • The one here was a better name I think.

    • I thought that was the tag line

  • I remember this not being well received from customers and coworkers when I worked at the cinemas so never ended up watching it, might give it a go though

    • Watch it. It's worth

  • +2

    My thetans approve.

  • +2

For all Emily Blunt fans out there, watch Pain Hustlers. Can't go wrong

  • +1

Watched this when it came out and was not overly impressed, found it average, but enjoyed Emily Blunt in it.

Listened to the audio book of 'all you need is kill' and then rewatched, found it a much more enjoyable viewing having some expanded lore about the creatures and the overall time dynamic etc that the novel gave.

So recommend giving the audiobook or manga a go then trying the film on.

Link to Amazon listing for the versions of the novel:

  • Great movie, it's on streaming, so didn't know it wasn't physically sold here.

    • Yeah currently one of the 52 movies they've temporarily added to apple tv. 2 months free here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/833007

      • Do you have a list of the 52 temporary movies??

        • No, and apparently they aren't showing up today for some reason. Apple tv sucks for browsing. Maybe the temporary was very temporary.

  • Damn now might have to watch it again for the 6th time

    • +8

Do it brah - ain’t no better way to wind down on a Sunday night.

Party bag of red rock deli
6 pack Brookvale Union ginger beer
2L box of bulla mint choc icecream

      Bliss

      • +1

        How fat are you

      • What about spicy Doritos and avocado or cream cheese dip?? bussin bussin.

I would skip the ice cream myself not big on sweet things the soda is enough. currently struggling to finish a tub of jam donut flavour ice cream. 😂

        • bussin bussin

          ONG

my favorite is the mission tortilla chips in cheey nacho flavour, sour creme, guac, salsa, cheese, airfryed bacon bits - also works good with the mcains pub style secret seasoned wedges done in airfryer as a base

soda i am a fiend for wimmers raspberry lemonade (Gotta be chilled just right) - just full neckin it out of the 1.25l bottle like some kind of animal.

  • One of the best scfi in recent times, 4k and vinyl getting pretty expensive these days

  • +2

This was $21 before though ?

    • +13

Just die and buy it when it was cheaper.

    • +3

Without those buying blu-ray versions there will be no good quality sources for those torrenting/useneting/rd-ing. Also I’m pretty sure ozbargainers buying disks are aware of other options. They just prefer disks for multiple reasons. Personally I’d not suggest these options in a thread about blu-ray disks.

      • +2

        Yes I too agree

  • +4

Battle is the Great Redeemer. It is the fiery crucible in which true heroes are forged. The one place where all men truly share the same rank, regardless of what kind of parasitic scum they were going in.
