Aliexpress for ssd? Is it reliable?

    • bought 2 others were fine

      • May I know how long have you been using it?
I am interested in buying but I am thinking of storing data, so if it is not reliable I will be in issue

        • Yes I want to know too

I've bought two WD 2230's, both were legit, and bench tested under Linux on the steam deck.

not about aliexpress, its about using brain what to buy and what to look for

        Wtf?
        Wow you’re so smart

  • Are these any different (apart from length) than other M.2’s?

    • +2

I dont think so. You can also get adaptors to make it fit

but $4 more for 2280 nvme and Amazon 1 day delivery

2230 is basically the small form factor version of the normal m.2

Lower speed, lower MTBF, lower IO.

If you need 2230 it's for a steamdeck or similar, or making a funky lil portable drive with ISOs and bootable programs.

For a new pc build, to store the Oz on, should I get the Samsung or the wd with the better read write speeds?

I haven't decided on the mono yet but will be the R7 788X3d

    • +2

Unless you have a specific need like steamdeck or making a tiny external drive, I wouldn't bother

  • hmmm approx ~$5 dearer than the last deal, same store

  • Legit paid like 120 about a week ago for a wd 1tb for my steam deck - didn’t want to wait and wanted it. Came few days ago and it works well. This seems like a good price.

  • Have used both Samsung pm991a and WD SN740 in Steam Decks. Both have been great.

  • links are dead, and i wouldnt trust ali ssds. most people that "test" these just copy a 1gb movie to it and call it a day, not realising how the scam works

    • -1

      Omg, what scam?

      • +2

its a low capacity device with firmware that reports it as whatever they want (100 petabyte occasionally!), using rejected flash (didnt pass the QA tests and was either binned or sold to dodgy resellers for cents). people are buying 16gb mpcie usb 2.0 flash drives marketed as 2tb nvme pcie ssds. in this example, the first 16gb will read and write perfectly! its when you write more than that it starts to rewrite over existing data

        • -1

          Shoot!

Good to know, thanks mate. I'll stick to local sellers then.

@lordra: not all are like this, just 99%. theres a few tells that you can look for, but its usually not worth the risk. ebay is a bit different in that you can get an easy refund. small "mom and pop" businesses would usually buy from china too, and even if they have advertised capacity, theres no guarantee they are real (decent flash that wont die in a few cycles). i would def stick to verified companies or use online tools to confirm if you got a fake (samsung lets you lookup serial for example)

            • +1

@sjsls: What is this world coming to.

Thanks, I learnt that I can now check serials from Samsung and Gskill.
I suppose that's the only way to verify its authencity. Stickers and firmware can be faked super easily.

            • @sjsls: Amazon products reliable?

  • My laptop has a 2230 slot along with a 2280 slot. The bios indicates it can support stripe raid. Currently installed is a gen4 2280.

After the necessary OS rebuild, would installing one of these gen3 2230's with the gen4 2280 make the system faster as raid 0, stripe?

I've always been curious about striping my primary drives but the g3 makes me doubt. Maybe I should just do it and see for myself.

Why is this showing up when I've never used it? Yeah, great deal.
