[NSW, VIC, ACT] 20% off Bouldering Gym Memberships (Upfront Payment) @ BlocHaus

70
WELCOME-HOME

Niche post, BlocHaus bouldering gym is offering a 20% discount on full paid memberships this weekend to celebrate the opening of the new Mitchell facility in CBR. Memberships get you entry to any of the BlocHaus bouldering gyms and free access to their classes. Discounts are very rare afaik, I've never noticed one being offered.

Prices:
1 month $132 $105.60 (=$26.40pw)
6 month $754 $603.20 (=$23.20pw)
12 month $1352 $1081.60 (=$20.80pw)

*Does not work on 10-pass, offer available online or at the counter

Not including shoe hire, a day pass is $24, so this offer is really only aimed at people going once a week or more. The value prop improves if you have a partner/pay for a second person- because you get to bring a friend free once every 30 days. In my case - over 12 months - I don't have to spend a further $288 because I get my partner in for free once a month, bringing my membership value prop component down to $15.26pw (or = $17.66 for the 6months).

Or just be non-white or gay and get this discount year round!

    • ?

      • I can only presume this comment relates to some fortnightly/monthly inclusive community groups with discounted entry for those events. BlocHaus is an inclusive environment and I'm pretty sure you can get discounted entry if you climb with those groups and also if you're just an ally, so not exclusive…I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.

        • +2

You can gain entry to "be an ally" but you will be charged more than other people because of your skin colour or who you find attractive.

      • They offer 'she/they/we boulder Fridays' (weekly from 5pm - free shoe hire and 20% off entry for 'gender diverse folk & all women, cis & trans inclusive'), 'climbingQTs meet-ups' (third Monday of every month - free shoe hire and $16 entry: 'everyone welcome: members & non-members, rainbow, trans, questioning, still deciding & allies') and 'affinity iniative meet-ups - climbers of colour social night' (first Monday of every month - free shoe hire and $16 entry that welcomes 'First Nations, Bla(c)k folks & People-of-Colour'). More details on their website here. These may be considered as special measures under the ACT Discrimination Act so probably aren't unlawful.

        • -2

And why do you think they believe these arrangements are worthwhile/necessary?

Simple solution for you. Complain to the ACT Human Rights Commissioner. Let us know how you go.

Must be hellish to be the subject of - or feel - discrimination. /i

I doubt it, but this parallel might help. You'll have to replace your skin colour and sexuality with your gender.

      • I keep forgetting you can't "discriminate" against white straight people, no matter what you do.

        • -3

Didums. You've forgotten the decades (centuries) of discrimination against non-whites and non-straights presumably? More likely you were completely oblivious. The irony, and your misplaced self-pity, is palpable.

          • +1

@Igaf: Why do I need to pay for the sins of someone else's father?
Fix the problem today by treating everyone equally, pretty simple really.

            • -3

@Mr BoMBAStiG: Lol. Been living under a rock since reaching the age of reason have you? If it's that simple then why is change taking so long and why is it so painful for many?

Being a white straight male is really tough though I agree /s, but YOU are FAR from being asked to pay for the sins of anyone. You simply aren't being given a discount for now.

Get some perspective, and open your eyes to what others less fortunate are experiencing and probably have experienced for most of their lives - directly or indirectly. You can't buy empathy but you can learn about and develop it.

              • @Igaf: It's taking so long because you keep on harping on about the past.

So not being given a permanent discount isn't the same as being charged more? Open your eyes lil boy.

                • -1

                  @Mr BoMBAStiG:

It's taking so long because you keep on harping on about the past.

So discrimination against non-whites and non-straights is a thing of the past? Are you really that ignorant or are you so self-centred that things only exist if they're in your orbit of interest?

So not being given a permanent discount isn't the same as being charged more?

The answer to your rhetorical question was provided in the examples I've already mentioned, examples you've conveniently ignored. Since you didn't get the obvious, I'll elaborate. You not getting a discount because you don't meet certain criteria is entirely different to you being charged more.

As I've already said, there are steps you can take if you and your Ozbargain sympathisers are actually seriously offended. Off the top of my head I can think of 3 options: (1) as I've already said, calmly take it up with BlocHaus; (2) complain to your fav anti-discrimination agency (or ultra conservative politician); (3) throw the baby out with the bathwater and take your business elsewhere. (1) would be the adult thing to do but I suspect that's well beyond you and your chums. There's a fourth, but it involves adult learning and managing change, so might be very difficult for you.

I keep forgetting you can't "discriminate" against white straight people, no matter what you do.

And yet religions and conservatives do it all the time. Your lack of awareness is typical of people who haven't been the subject of REAL deep-rooted discrimination and don't understand the adjustments societies go though to advance basic human rights.

Question for you - did you or your employer get govt handouts during covid? Just one of myriad examples of targeted "discrimination" you either ignore or are completely oblivious to.

          • @Igaf: We didn't get any covid assistance.
How is that comparable? Businesses that got assistance were meant to have been directly affected by lock downs. Does your skin colour or sexual preference affect a bouldering experience?
If they gave discounts to paraplegics and had special nights for them, I'd understand.

            • -3

@Mr BoMBAStiG: It was an obvious example of govt targeted discrimination. People are often unaware of the specific benefits they themsleves have received - even as they rail against things like social security "handouts" - because their lives have always been relatively comfortable, free of discrimination and vilification.

Skin colour and sexuality has nothing to do with bouldering. If you're that concerned talk to the business, I'm sure they'll explain their rationale. They might even give you a discount because you're clearly financially deprived.

Businesses offer incentives to certain groups all the time. Are you also spitting chips about seniors discounts and special offers to people with kids for example? How about age based cinema ticket prices? After all, we're getting the same experience, occupying the same seats.

Look up the term social inclusion and understand its current context and why governments and businesses are going out of their way to get involved. Also understand that we're in a transition period where particular groups of people who are STILL being subjected to hateful and/or ignorant vilification (by a relatively small minority) are getting occasional "special treatment", treament you're jealous of for some reason. If the same "discrimination" you're whinging about exists in 2050 then we'll likely have failed as a society.

                @Igaf:

Are you also spitting chips about seniors discounts and special offers to people with kids for example?

If you can't see the difference between people who literally have no income and people who have different colour skin then you should have gone to Specsavers.

                • -1

@Mr BoMBAStiG: If you learn nothing else from this exchange, at least learn what the word literally means and how to use it.

So your next premise is that seniors and accompanied kids (and by extension their parents/grandparents etc) have no income? That is literally NONSENSE. It's a difficult concept /s but if it was true then there would be no point in businesses offering them discounts would there?

  • Not sure why climbing gyms are always so expensive. They seem a lot more expensive than normal gyms but I don't see why they're so much more expensive.

    • A like for like comparison would be pricing for a powerlifting or weightlifting gym
