On sale is this new portable monitor from Mucai that ticks a lot of boxes for those wanting a new portable monitor. The main highlights that makes this better than other 15.6" offerings is the 4K resolution, touchscreen display and a whopping 600cd/m² brightness that's double of most other monitors.

Features include a 15.6" IPS LED touchscreen panel with 3840x2160 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, 60Hz refresh rate, 100% sRGB colour gamut, 1700:1 contrast ratio, HDR, 178° wide viewing angle, dual speakers, VESA mounting and a built in kickstand.

There's two USB-C ports for display/power, PD passthrough charging, mini HDMI and a 3.5mm audio jack. For accessories there's a power adapter, USB-C to USB-C, USB-A to USB-C and Mini HDMI to HDMI cable.

While the description does mention a "non-slip leather case" it doesn't seem to be included and you could potentially get a partial refund after delivery for being "not as described" or "parts missing".

    1. Can you connect a mobile phone to this to watch Netflix etc? Someone said about needing specific phone hardware in another post?
    2. Can you use it to enlarge your phone screen or have multiple phone apps running eg telegram, youtube and chrome?
    • +4

Afaik, not all phones can do that. My pixel 7 cants, just google your model.

I don't think you can extend your phone screen, but actually just mirror it, so no option to make it larger and have multiple app like on a windows desktop (i would love if this would be possible)

      • +1

Android desktop mode is close to coming to android and you can activate it in developer options.

Pixel 8 supports video out but google hasn't turned it on yet, so that shows that it could be semi close to being available soonish.

With graphineOS on a pixel 8 you can do video out and play around with desktopmode. Can't stand that google gimped the 7 and earlier because they wanted people to buy chromecasts.

    • +1

Your phone must support video out via usb in order for it to display on these types of monitors. Has to be USB 3.1 or higher I believe.

    Samsung and Huawei.

I use Samsung Dex. It loads when you connect and screen.

After my 13in oled was so utterly dissappointing in image quality i really hesitate to trust these cheap portable screens.

The Bimawen? I was just about to order one!

How bad can an OLED be?

      • +2

because there is such a huge difference between the lowest brightness and being off, it actually ends up being worse than a non oled becaus it introduces a (profanity) ton of banding where there would normally be a smooth transition. it makes dark areas of high quality video look extremely pixelated. i will have to try calibrating it but out of the box the calibration is hands down the worst i've ever seen. you don't need any refernce to immediately notice it's shit. i wanted to like it. i'll use it. maybe i just got a dud but what i got? it's a (profanity) terrible monitor and i'm not sure i could buy something with a shitter image if i tried.

Edit: I will say it's still useable, just don't buy it expecting to be blown away. some things will look good, but i think in most cases you will prefer the image quality of your primary device no matter what that device actually is. I'll use mine as a secondary monitor for my steamdeck when i travel and it will work well. it's just not in any way an upgrade other than size and res.

        • +1

Do you have pics of the banding? Was think of getting an OLED monitor but that seems concerning.

          • +1

@quill: I've had a long day but i'll get some for you tomorrow. I think this is just an extreme example, i think oled monitors in general are amazing. just not the bimawen.

          • @quill: I did some more testing, going to wait until it gets dark to take photos but i've noticed a few things after actually messing around trying my best to get it right. I've calibrated the panel for skin tone primarily and it is way less jarring to me now. some things look better on it than my other displays now. the cut off level is still pretty bad compared to a standard lcd but the significant boost in contrast in the colours is worth the trade off. I am not seeing the dimming cut off banding anymore and i have no idea why. i'll try and replicate it again and nail down what conditions make it stand out. i wouldn't ever use it for colour grading, image editing etc. but for watching content at the discounted price i'd recommend it. given theres no review of the thing i'll try and at the least get a decent set of photos tonight and make a crappy review. I am also an unreliable moron so don't hold your breath too much.

I think I just picked up the same brand but 2560x1600, not sure I could recommend 4k at that display size - though the 2560x1600 is pretty good.

    • +1

I was just thinking the same. My boss has a 15" laptop with a 4k screen, and it's just insane. Who needs that much PPI in a laptop? You have to run everything scaled at 300% to see it.
The 2560x1600 is a good sweet spot. Still "retina"-level PPI at 15", enough resolution to get fantastic detail, but not obscene.

      • Indeed. Been rocking the HP Spectre with a 13.3" 4K oled for over 3 yrs. 99.9% of the times runs at FHD as I can't read a thing at 4K lol. Feel 4K is relevant when above 17".

    • Can you drop the resolution?

      • +2

Yes, or use scaling. I'll probably do 200% scaling so it's effectively 1080p but high resolution

      • +1

yes but running monitors at native resolution is always preferable. dropping the res still runs all the pixels on the panel. you are basically viewing upscaled content. nothing will be as sharp as it should be.

  • Could you use this as a digital photo frame by just loading up all your pics on usb and plugging it in? Is there a digital photo frame setting?

    • +3

No there is not. You need something to display the pics.

Does this work with 2020 M1 MacBook Pro and M2 MacBook Air 2023?

  • +1

    Note included plug is Euro

    • Convert it or use your phone charger and cable.

Any recent phone charger can power this.

Heck even a powerbank can do it.

      • Even the USB port on your computer is sufficient.

        • Yup. My one is plugged to my laptop.

  • To use the touch screen, do I need to connect it to a USB port on my PC?
Also, does it support multi-touch? It probably does, but better to be sure..

    • If you are using the usb cable and the device you connected to it supports touch. Then you get touch.

      • I mean if I connect it to my PC via HDMI, I will probably need an additional USB cable for the touch to work.

        • Yes

  • First time AliExpress user here - promo code doesn’t seem to work?

  • Any links for 24 or 27" display units (if they exist)?

    • +1

At that size you're going to get a normal monitor.

  • If you get one of these with a high refresh rate, will it be good for gaming?

    • +1

It you are fine with its small size - sure.
      It's basically a laptop screen.

  • Received mine today, 6 days after placing the order, which is crazy fast!
It's a decent monitor, but for some reason I can't change its brightness. The brightness slider in OSD is active, I can move it from 0% to 100%, but the screen brightness remains the same.
I tried changing all other settings, enabling/disabling HDR, different HDMI/USB-C cables.
    Anyone else has this issue?

    • How are you powering the monitor? I've found that the USB port on the computer for some isn't enough and they need a USB charger.

      • Tried both actually, on 4 different PCs, Windows and Mac. Brightness is definitely broken.
Also, I believe the panel is not 4K..

        • Windows doesn't let you go to 3840x2160 resolution? HDMI or USB-C.

If it is indeed broken you'll easily get a decent partial refund from Ali.

          • @Clear: I can set it to 3840x2160, but the picture is not 4K. I posted some photos in a comment below.

            • @doperst: Reminds me of this where it's a pentile display.

Sharpness settings make a difference? What cable is being used? That'll definitely have an impact as not all can be used for 4K, i.e. a USB 2.0 C cable.

              • @Clear: I tried mini HDMI cable from the box and several good USB-C cables. Sharpness setting doesn't make any difference, I'm not sure if it works at all.

                • @doperst: Sounds like a dispute is in order.

  • Looks like it's not 4K!
Here are some pictures taken when this monitor is set to its native resolution and windows scaling is set to 100%. You can clearly see that the pixels are huge and small text is unreadable. It's probably 1080p interpolated..

    • I have sharp text at UHD 100% scaling so likely something wrong with your setup. Is your HDMI port 2.1? Does your laptop support DP1.4 over USBC? Try another cable? I'm just using the USBC cable that came with the monitor plugged into the second port. Port1 using for power.

      • Nah, I tried a bunch of different HDMI and USB-C cables (including the ones from the box), on three different Windows PCs with different GPUs and a 2023 Mac Mini.
I believe if the cable or HDMI version was incompatible, OS wouldn't allow me to select 3840x2160 resolution.

My guess is that they put a 1080p LCD panel into my monitor. I can see physical pixels with the naked eye, they are about the same size as on my 1080p laptop.
This is probably why brightness setting doesn't work - it's a wrong panel for this controller.
