How to Check Car Battery Compatibility?

I have a Subaru Forester 2.5L 2016 that is still on its original battery. Stop start hasn't worked in around 2 years which I'm quite happy about but am unsure if I need a stop start battery.

When I use the Repco compatibility check it comes up with a variety of batteries starting from $180 while Supercheap Auto just gives me one option for a $320 stop start q85 EFB. Supercheap compatibility notes states only replace an EFB battery with a new EFB battery but it seems Repco doesn't care.

Do I need to buy a stop start EFB battery if I don't want stop start functionality?

Also are 'Repco by Century' batteries as good as original Century batteries?

Which battery would you recommend?

Repco by Century $180 battery

Repco by Century $308 q85 EFB battery

Supercheap Auto $318 Century q85 EFB Battery

NRMA brand 660CCA EFB battery $405 (Including installation and delivery)

Plug it in. If it ain't working, its incompatible.

    • If stop start wasn't a risk I would have done that but unsure if the car will chew through the new battery trying to stop start.

I thought you said stop start wasnt working?

        • -1

Only because the battery is weak.

What does the Century Battery compatibility chart tell you?
    https://www.centurybatteries.co.nz/resources/battery-finder

    • They show EFB only like Supercheap so sounds like that's what I'll be getting.

I would go direct to the manufacturer websites and input your vehicle details ie Century, Supercharge, Exide. I prefer Supercharge batteries myself. Everyone will have a different opinion.

  • Have you checked the Autobarn website for a 3rd option?

I believe Century quality is the same no matter which one you get.

but it seems Repco doesn't care.

Are you suggesting Repco is careless?

      JV , you've done it again !

  • Stop start hasn't worked in around 2 years

Is that because of battery degradation, or some other fault?

    • No idea, ran the battery flat once by accident and the car never stop started again. Might have tripped some setting or just degraded the battery enough.

  • Call a Subaru dealer and speak to spare parts and ask them

  • i recently replaced battery for my 2014 foz with stopstart function.

The salesman said if you dont have a stop start battery and the car starts from a stop, then issues will arise.
You'd have to constantly remember to switch S/S off to avoid that.

    • The salesman said if you dont have a stop start battery and the car starts from a stop, then issues will arise.

      Did you ask them why?

      • Yes, he told me why and convinced me on the spot why i should spend the extra $100. Cant relay that answer here coz i dont remember.

  • Eh I have an XV with stop start, using a regular century battery in it, but I turn off the stop start on each drive.

I presume using stop start with regular battery - if you use the stop start - you will wear out the battery faster and may void the warranty on the battery.

Imagine the battery has a limited number of cycles starting the car, stop start is made to handle more

  • Also depends on how long you expect to keep the car.

    • Why?

      • +1

I would buy the cheapest battery if I only expected to keep the car another year.

      • You often look at things from a different perspective, which is admirable, so use that great ability and work it out.

EDIT: As Cluster was posting at the same time I was, they might have given the game away 😀

    • Cheers, that makes my decision much easier. Repco excludes this model from any discounts for some reason.
