Sacca's Fine Foods Asked Me to Use Self-Checkout

I recently went into Sacca's Fine Foods in Northern Suburbs in Melbourne with my mother.

We generally buy lots of fruits and vegetables never had any issues before. Last time in store staff asked me to use self-checkout despite my shopping cart having 20+ items, citing staff shortage, although there was a staff managing the check-out.

To me it appeared clearly, she was not interested in bagging my items. I was fuming but somehow kept my patience and completed the shopping.

Apart from not going again and leaving a negative review I was wondering what are my options in such a scenario? Can I leave the cart inside the store and take my business elsewhere?

Sure , not like they’re going to fine you… but you’ve already spent the time selecting the items

    • Thanks mate, its a double whammy spent time selecting and then spent time self-billing what's next load the aisles and we will give you discount..

      • +5

The broadmeadows one seems to have been getting quite a lot of negative reviews lately .

maybe its a sign to take your money elsewhere.

      • -1

Havent you been to any supermarkets lately?

  • +10

Yes. The goods are Sacca's until paid for.
    (Walk away).

LOL at the overreaction. Staff could be lazy or just overworked. Have some empathy. If it bothers you so much, don't go next time.

      • +4

By your own admission, you've been there before and this is the first time it's happening. Don't jump to conclusions.

there needs to be some empathy at the customers who are already reeling under the stress of cost of living

Does buying at the self-checkout make everything more expensive? Why are you buying at a large store like Sacca's? Go to preston market near closing time, you'll get incredible bargains.

but hey how will a papdi care…hahahaha

hahaha you so funny @crazyguy hahaha

It definitely adds to the hassle and leads to a poor customer experience, bagging 30 Kg + of goods is defintely a hassle for me if its not for you. If you can read english i completed my shopping even though i was not happy about the whole situation so there was no reaction/over-reaction but this was more for what if it happens next time. Thanks for your suggestion regarding Preston Market but its far from where i live.

Your name certainly fits. I have no idea if you are male or female but you expect a (usually young) female cashier to bag 30kg + of goods.

Just wondering if your mother tucks you into bed and reads you a story.

I think its an unreasonable ask personally.

Its their job and their age and gender shouldnt matter. We aren't asking them to lift all the vegetables at once, either.

Not as if the price is changing either. They want you to spend your time and effort for something that was previously provided without changing the price. Enshittification everywhere.

You're going to push the heavy trolley to the car, load groceries into the car, unload the car at home and then stock your pantry. That's all a-ok but self-checkout made you fume.

Thanks for your suggestion regarding Preston Market but its far from where i live.

There are plenty of similar markets around: Prahran, Footscray, QV, Dandenong. Take your pick. Downside is, none of them have checkout staff to pack your groceries sad trombone

            • @soan papdi: Great thanks for your advice.

              • @eckorock: QV Market in the city.

                • @soan papdi: Didn't know about that. Is it a fresh food market like the Queen Victoria market? Basement level?

                  • @eckorock: Not sure if you’re serious. It’s the same QV
market. Just visiting around closing time usually nets good bargains

                    • @soan papdi: Last time I went to QV it was just a food court and some bubble tea shops
Downstairs was a Big W and a supermarket. I didn't know there was a fresh food market there?

                      • @eckorock: Oh I see your confusion. QV is at Lonsdale/Swanston. I was referring to QV Market (Elizabeth St/Victoria St).

vote with your wallet —> they go under —> you will be forced to use self-checkout at Colesworth + Aldi

    • +1

Hence I limited shopping at colesworth hoping small business would be better alternative but it seems like everyone is following the same trend.

      • Do you use self service check outs at Coles? It's a yes or no answer.

        • +1

          nope conditional

    • +3

you will be forced to use self-checkout at Colesworth + Aldi

All the Coles and Aldi near us have a cashier at all times.

    • You are not forced to use it at least at Coles.

You just tell them that you don't want to use it and someone will ring you.

I also refuse to use self checkout. Being an ex coles cashier I can't do for free what I used to be paid for.

  • +4

Mate why are you so mad about this, have you got nothing better to think about with your time? I doubt the workers were trying to spite you. Don't be so angry at the world, you will bring problems to yourself.

    • -8

Ah nope but thanks for your advise.

      • +5

Fuming means very close to the most angry a person can get, I think people are scoffing at the idea a self checkout could make anybody so cross.
It seems a very large overreaction to a minor issue, so people wonder how you have made it through life so far when you have no doubt faced real annoyances.

        • +5

not only that..they got themselves riled up again by imagining them in the situation again and then decided to post to an open forum…

What did the staff member say? This is unclear although your interpretation is.

Could it be that you were asked to go there as another option? Eg. There are some extra checkouts there if you'd like.

    • One staff member assisted check-out and one staff member assisted self-checkout, this has been the number since I have been going there. During assisted check-out, the staff member said, "Sorry, we are short-staffed today, so please use self check-out," but the same staff member assisted and bagged another customer the very next moment.

      • +1

Did you use deodorant before shopping?

Was the other customer female with 25 items weighing 37kg +?

  • +1

It appears your anger here probably shouldn't be with the staff member directing you to the self checkout to help speed up your checkout as well as that of others, but at the staff member who called in sick leaving them short staffed. Instead of wasting time leaving a negative review of the small business you are wanting to support for something that was out of their control, perhaps when the sick staff member is working next return to the store and ask for an explanation given the horror you had to endure of using the self checkout.

    • I was sharing my experience but thanks for your suggestion.

    • +3

Don't forget to ask for receipts - they should provide you with a Doctors note explaining their absence.

    • +1

I don’t understand how a sick staff member should get the blame here? Surely the employer needs to staff adequately if someone is unwell?

    • at the staff member who called in sick leaving them short staffed. Instead of wasting time leaving a negative review of the small business you are wanting to support for something that was out of their control,

Yeah, lets just blame a sick worker rather than a business that can't plan or manage adequately so that they leave themselves short staffed.
It's not the employee who is the cause of this.

      • agreed.

I like to use the self checkouts anyway so I don't have to interact with people, just a computer lady that yells at me when there's an unexpected item in the bagging area.

You could mention to the staff member that you don't want to use the self checkouts.

Wonder if crazyguy uses an ATM to withdraw money or visits the bank so the teller has do the hard work and hand over the money.

  • @crazyguy This speech "this is water" by David Foster Wallace was a huge motivation to change myself though I still struggle. Have a read or listen, whatever you prefer: https://fs.blog/david-foster-wallace-this-is-water/

  • They probably think most people won’t mind. Some people even prefer it to avoid interacting with another human (or to put their almonds through as bananas). If it’s that important to you just speak up at the time and say “I’d prefer to wait and have an attendant assist me”.

    • Thanks!

  • Hope you can recover from this..

Have a nice day and a great weekend.

              • -1

@CurlCurl: I brought people in Gaza because of countless images on TV showing those souls struggling for basic food items.
So it was about "groceries" like those matching the stress suffered by the OP when having to pay. Shock horror.

On the other hand YOU brought a totally unrelated, politically and racially motivated comment with unsolicited and unwanted descriptions of alleged violence and other.
Obviously your indoctrination and brainwashing triggered your "but look all these poor innocent suffering souls", totally unrelated to groceries nor shopping but satisfying your racist/political agenda.

Indeed you made up your mind and within it (your mind) everything highlights the "suffering of YOUR victims".

                Call it by name!

                    Like a bad smell.

Now, focus. This is about SHOPPING.
                    Focus, concentrate.
                    Please.

                    • @LFO: I brought people in Gaza because of countless images on TV showing those souls struggling for basic food items Your words.

Why are people in Gaza struggling for basic food items?

Because Hamas went into Israel and killed, raped, tortured, mutilated, bashed and kidnapped people that were attending a music festival.

  • I've had the same thing. After doing self-checkout, told one of the staff the 'manager' said I had to use self-checkout. She just rolled her eyes and said she's not the manager. All I replied with was, "She acted like she was." Upon walking out turned around to see her getting a lecture. Just ring up the store, Stuff'em.

Mental health issues is real in this world and if OP is raging because if this he/she needs support not a pile on. Hope you can seek some help with your situation OP. Self packing your groceries is tough, but unfortunately you might come across some tougher situations in life and seeking help early will certainly assist.

If you read it with seriousness that is fine too, clearly OP needs help

  • My advice.

Next time you feel like you are fuming raise your clenched fist angrily up into the air, have a snarl on your face, look around at the benign scene around you, and then slowly lower your fist again, hoping no-one actually saw your fury manifest.
