    Doesn't feel right using a keyboard app that sends everything you input over the internet…

    • +5

      I'm surprised Apple allows custom keyboards, considering they don't allow proper alarm clock apps (i.e. ones that don't have to be constantly open and in the foreground to function correctly)

      • +1

        For a long time they didn’t. But eventually caved.

        Since iOS added swipe, I see no reason to use a third party keyboard but.

            @jv: Indeed.

          • @jv: Who was once a Victorian.

              @Fatboy74:

              Who was once a Victorian.

              It is well known that most people adapt their accent/language when they move.
              There are lots of psychological studies on the topic.

            @jv: Not sure why you got downvoted on this one. Quite a witty and insightful observation.
            Queenslanders = but
            Sandgropers (WA) = hey
            Victorians = yeah

            Not sure what people from other states colloquially end their sentences with, but this was also my observation as I spent time in each one.

          • @jv: The username wasn't a giveaway?

      My exact thought. What a great way to fetch all of the data from your phone keyboard inputs.

      That's a hell no from me.

    • Is it safe if I use this keyboard for entering non-sensitive data only, then switch back to the normal keyboard once it's done?

    • +3

      This app is risky as it sends all data with its API key for ChatGPT functionality, potentially allowing it to be logged on the ChatGPT server.

    • Yes, won't use any 3rd keyboard.

  • lift time access works.

    • Not for long, I suspect, as they have to pay charges to ChatGPT.

    • When you know, you know

    Given the way these things work I cannot see how this is a good idea for privacy reasons..

    Also, cool node number at least. 833333.

    Hey everyone,

    As the sole indie developer behind this app, I appreciate your attention to data privacy concerns. Here are a few points for clarification:

    • The iPhone system enforces the use of its native keyboard for entering sensitive data, such as passwords, to enhance security and will automatically block third-party keyboards.
    • The custom keyboard only sends data to OpenAI (ChatGPT) when a user utilizes a specific feature. It does not capture any data during regular keyboard use.
    • As stated clearly on the app page, I collect anonymized usage data, such as the number of feature requests and crash rates, to improve the app's performance.
    • Finally, unlike other apps, no sign-up is required, adding an extra layer of anonymization to the process.
    • +3

      Can you see the data that is sent to OpenAI?

    • +2

      Sure I believe you

  • +10

    Yeah, sorry OP but the T&Cs and Privacy Policy are very loose.

    1) "typing data is not collected by the app" - but it's all sent to OpenAI (the owners of ChatGPT) in order for the app to work. There is no mention of whether they use a private/business instance of ChatGPT or the public free one - given the app is free, I'd imagine it's the latter. Assuming this is the case, all collected data becomes the property of ChatGPT and is used to further develop and retrain ChatGPT and other AI models. If you're not sure why this would matter - check out what happened to Samsung

    2) "AI-Driven Replies: Get intelligent, context-aware responses from KeyAI’s AI Keyboard." - The app sends your message history on to ChatGPT as part of the prompt in order to auto suggest an accurate response. All the context/info from the messages you're replying to is now (as above) passed on to ChatGPT/OpenAI *(and potentially used in to build out their public models/responses available to everyone on the internet).

    3) "Device Information: We may collect anonymized information about the devices accessing our App, including operating system and IP address." Guess what? Under the EU's GDPR (which the AU government is currently looking to emulate in our legislation), IP address is considered personally identifiable information. Depending on how it's used (eg, browser and device "fingerprinting"), there can be nothing 'anonymised' about it.

    4) The app is provided by a single person, not even a company (stated at the top of the Privacy Policy) - with no more than a gmail email address. It is super risky trusting any of your data with a single person who's responsible for running the whole thing. There's no chance this one person could be an expert in cyber security, app development, sales, marketing etc etc etc. With no clear data deletion policies and a very clear attempt to avoid any responsibility for data security, you must basically accept that all the data they collect about you and your messages (linked to your IP addresses) will likely be leaked at some stage.
    Data Retention - We will retain the collected data for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy or as required by law.
    Security - We take reasonable measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is entirely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

    • all collected data becomes the property of ChatGPT and is used to further develop and retrain ChatGPT and other AI models

      Data sent through the API isn't used to train models. "Look under the What sources of data are used for training OpenAI models?" FAQ item on https://openai.com/enterprise-privacy.

      Unless you're implying by "The public free one" that instead of the actual API, they are using a wrapper around the web UI like people did for improvised APIs before the official API was released?

    There no such free meal in this world, you are the commodity when if it free.

    • -1

      I am curious to know your take on free software like VLC?
      Or when certain religious communities provide free meals to anyone?

      • VLC is open source software. People contribute for its improvement because they want to. That's more like volunteering. This is not like that.
        I won't start on religion but I'd hardly call it an apt comparison here.

        • +1

          It’s still free.

  • Lifetime Free Access to your personal data

  • Good effort OP - But I discourage anyone using such intrusive apps from unknown devs with lose responsibility (or even from big corps for that matter)
